GENTLEMEN, The pleasing manner in which you re- ceived me on a former occasion has tempted me again to offer my services to your notice. The addresses of the Two Candidates already in the Field, require reviewing:— Howel Gwyn, Esquire, is." pure Independent Conservative, willing to support any Measure to relieve those (who honestly differ from him in their religious views,) from paying Church Rates, con- sidering the Ballot inconsistent with the pure spirit of Englishmen, we need not expect him to vote for the extension of the Franchise. The Earl of Brecknock, from his name and con- nection with your Ancient Borough, has a claim for your support. His political opinions being ad- verse to those of our late lamented Member, will neutralize that claim. The line of policy expressed by the above-named Candidates, my humble opinion is, that they are not liberal enough for the Electors and Non-Elec- tors of this Borough. The special point I wish to bring before you is, that I am prepared to be more liberal, having been fortunate enough to take advantage of the Markets which enables me to offer you a superb lot of WINTER CLOTHING on the most liberal terms so that one and all shall exclaim Phipps for Brecknock." a I am, Gentlemen; Your obedient Servant, H. PHIPPS. Red House, ITigh Street, Brecon, October 30th, 1865. TO THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORS OF THE BOROUGH OF BRECON AND TOWN OF LLYWELL. GENTLEMEN, After the very flattering manner in which you have received me, I should be ungrateful indeed, were I not to embrace this early opportunity of returning you my most sincere and heartfelt thanks. The success I have met with far exceeds my most sanguine expectations, and I entertain no dtmbt, when my canvass is complete, that I shall find a decided majority of votes in my favour, and in this belief I subscribe myself, Your most obliged and grateful Servant, HOWEL GWYN. Brecon, Ootober 9th, 1865. Castle of Brecon Hotel Company, LIMITED. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, THAT a GENERAL MEETING of the Propr. etors is convened for WEDNESDAY, the 10th of January, 1866, at the CASTLE, at 2 p.m., to receive the Directors' eport, and a Statement of Accounts—to declare a Dividend—to elect four Directors in the room of those who retire by rota- tion, and to transact other business. Goods carried and delivered with care and at moderate charges. No more complaints of delay in delivering goods.—Prothero's Boats will wait the arrival of the Packets at Newport, and be despatched with promptness to Brecon three times a week. Brecon, 1st Oct., 1863. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE BOSOUGH OF BRECON AND TOWI* OF LLYWELL. GENTLEMEN, Solicitous as I am for the honor of represen- ting you in Parliament, my respect for your feelings on the loss of your late lamented Member has hitherto commanded my silence. My political principles are, I have no doubt well known to you all as being Conservative and Independent. I consider the very essence of the Creed of the Conservative to be, the use of the pruning Knife, carefully to cut off every proved and acknowledged abuse, and to aim at progress and improvement. Though firmly attached to the Established Church, I nevertheless deeply respect the convic- tion of those who honestly differ from me in their religious views, and I shall therefore support any Measure that will relieve those who entertain con- scientious scruples from any longer paying Church Rates. Believing the Income Tax to be inquisitorial, I am opposed to its continuance, and think it ought only to be used as a temporary resource in cases of War or any great financial embarrassment of the Country. I consider the Ballot to be incon- sistent with the spirit of the English constitution, and am convinced it would not prove any real advantage or safeguard to the Voter. I am no stranger to your ancient Borough and County, with which my Family has been connected for many centuries, and I should indeed feel proud and gra- tified if the connection were cemented by my becoming your Representative in the House of Commons. You may depend, in such an event, upon my best exertions being used to promote in every way the welfare of your Borough, as well as of the Country at large. I have the honor to remain, GENTLEMEN, Your Faithful -Servant, HOWEL GWYN. Brecon. Oct. 6th, 1865. General PRINTING & STATiOIEBY @(!1lbft A ,3 mlJlg "REPORTER OFFICE," BULWARK, BRECON. BRUTAL MURDER NEAR NEWCASTLE.
BRUTAL MURDER NEAR NEWCASTLE. Mr. Cockcroft, the coroner for South Northum- berland, opened an inquest on Tuesday morning at Six Mile-bridge, near Newcastle-on-Tvne, on the body of Margaret Cook, wife of John Cook, a hind with Mr. John Davidson, farmer, Wideopen, who was brutally murdered by her husband on Saturday night. They were a drunken couple, and had both been under the influence of drink on Saturday night. After being turned out of the public-house at midnight, Cook had gone for his wife who was at the farmhouse carousing with some of the other servants, and they left, he carry- ing a lantern. Nothing more was heard of them until three o'clock on Sunday morning, when Cook called up some neighbours, as he said there was something the matter. They went out, and about 100 yards from the cottage where Cook lived they found the poor woman lying on the ground, with her face all bloody and apparently drunk. They carried her home and laid her before the fire, and thinking her insensibility and bruises arose F, from drink they left her with her husband. About eleven o'clock in the forenoon a man named Thomp- son, a neighbour, knocked at Cook's door and was admitted. Thompson, on going up to the bedside fmnd Mrs. Cook was insensible, frightfulty bruised, and apparently dying. He went out and cold some of the neighbours, and the police and a sur- geon were sent for but before the surgeon arrived the woman was dead. Her left arm was broken and the bone was protruding through the skin; f: u or five ribs were broken also, and her face was one mass of bruises. There were two bad cuts on the left side of the head, and the hair on that part of the head had all been torn out. The road fi cm" the farm to the cottages showed that a fearful struggle had takeu place, and that the woman had been most foully ill-treated by her brutal husband. He is in the custody of the county constabulary.
