SINGULAR SUICIDE OF A SAILOR. On Thursday Mr. Payne, the City coroner, held an inquiry at the Old Parr's Head Tavern, Little Kaight Rider-street, touching the death of Jonathan Simpson, aged 27 years. Wickfield R. Simpson said that the deceased was his brother. He was a sailor, and a fortnight ago he returned home after having made a voyage to Mel- bourne and Peru. He stated that his ship was paid-off at Antwerp, and that while on board his living was very bad as his captain was not a just man, and he seemed to fret much about the bad living. On Monday he went to the shipping office to get a ship, bat; to his surprise he found it closed in oonsequence of a strike for higher wages amongst the sailors of the port of London. He spent money amongst the sailors on strike, and he returned home in the evening very sad. Witness, in order to cheer him up, brought a news- paper and thought to entertain his mind with the state 1 of things in the City, and he read to him an account of the stoppage of the Consolidated Bank. Witness then asked him to go to the Olympic Theatre, and he got, ready to go, but he suddenly disappeared, and witness went without him. After returning from the theatre witness was informed that the deceased had committed suicide. Mary B. Simpson, mother of the deceased, said that her son was found lying in a pool of blood on the floor of a cellar underneath the house. His throat was cut, and an open razor lay on the ground near him. He had entered the cellar unperceived by his brother when they were leaving the house to go to the theatre. He was a very excitable man, but be frequently became very desponding. He spent a great deal of money in drink. When he was coming over in the packet from Antwerp the captain of the steamer took a bottle of gin from him and threw it into the sea. On Monday he was much depressed about the strike., and he said he would dispose of his clothes to relieve his fellow- sailors. Mr. W. G. May, M.R.S.C., said that the (leceased. had expired fiom the effects of a deep eelf-inaicted wound in the throat, which had divided all the large vessels. Bis death mast have been instantaneous. The Coroner having summed up, thej ury returned a •rosdict of "'Ssuoide whila of uaetotuid mind."
