This little town, proverbially quiet for its trade and sound in in its iimited commercial transactions, was on Monday morning thrown into a state of the most intense excitement by the announcement of the suspension of payment by this firm. The not ice posted on the door was as follows:—"In conse- quence of the defalcations of Mr. Alfred Chapman, and our great loss by him, we are unable to resume business.—SNEAD AND Go." It would be difficult to predict the efFect of this disaster upon the town and. its locality, there having been but one bank here for the last 15 or 16 years. The bank of Messrs. Snead, Sneacl, and MorgHu, of this town, has nothing to do with the firm at Chepstow, as may be seen by the following extract from the JBankers' Almanack of 1866 :—"Chepstow Old Bank, Snead and Co., established 1st May, 1827, fixed issue, £ d'3S7, John Best Snead, Chep- stow, banker, and Amy Maria Snead, spinster, Eastcliff, Chepstow, banker." — 0 mm.
