These Sessions commenced in the County Hall on Tusday last for the transaction of the usiial, quarterly business, when the following magistrates were presentRev. Morgan, fanner, Pantycored Mr. Thoma.s .Price, fariiier, Lla dew. f The Chairman, in addressing the Grand Jiiry, said that they would. he was sure, agree with him in regretting the absence of the Chairman of that Court (Mr. Penry Williams), who, under the greut affliction he was suffering, could not be expected to attend that dav. He was sorry to observe that the Calendar presented to them was very heavy there were the names of no less thari 13 prisoners con- tained in it, and two or three charges were preferred against one or two of the prisoners. It appeared also that since the lastSessiolls 12 persons had been summarily convicted he believed they would with hirugreatly regret the increase of crime in the county some of the offences weie trivial, but one or two were of a serious nature. He did not -know whether such increaso could be attributed to the want of work or idleness, or to the want of education, or was it that they afforded the prison- ers too great coijxfcrt at the county gaol. But be it from whatever cause it may the fact was there was a great increase. It appeared that" a short iy time back, prisoners, upon being discharged from gaol, committed another offence the next day. and was again sent to gaol. The Chairman remarked upon the number of gentlemen summoned as; Grand Jurors who had that day absented them- selves, and stated that he wished it known through- out the county that upon such an event again hap- pening the Court would enforce a fine upon. them. The Chairman concluded by referring -1jo tha,A-, nancial position of the county and the prpspeet -of the increased Expenditure on behalf of the asylum through the probable dissolution of partnership be- tween the counties of Brecon, Monmouth, Hereford, and Radnor, as recommended by the Commission- ers in Lunacy in consequence of the present establishment at Abergravenny being over crowded, 85 patients being boarded out. He had no further remarks to make but to inform them that on the previous day a penny rate had been proposed for the ensuing quarter. He wpuld therefore discharge them to their duties and would thank, thelu to re- turn a bill as early as possible. TRIAL OF PRISONERS. FKLONT.—David RltYs, laborer, was charged with feloniously stealing a gun, the property of Benjamin Harding Newman, at Defynnock, on the 16th of Apr}, 1 ?61 also stealing a sack,, the pro- perty of John Phillips, at Llanthew,. on the 26tb of November, 1866. Mr. T. Bishop prosecuted, and Mr. W. Games defended the prisoner. Several witnesses were examined, and Mr. Games made a powerful defence, and called several persons as to character. The chairman summed up, and the jury returned a verdicf. of not guilty. PONY STEALING. — (reorge Lewis, nltvvy,, was charged with feloniously stealing one roan pony mare, at Penderyn, the property of Leyshoir Rhys. He was further charged with stealing a p.oiiv4naie the property of Evan Richards, also a bridle the prope:ty of Rees Williams, at Llanfihangel-nnnt- bran, on the 11th November, 1866. Mr. Bishop prosecuted. Pleaded not guilty.—Sentenced to 5 years penal servitude. BURGLARY. George Jones, and John Jones tramps, were charged with feloniously breaking into the dwelling-house of Thomas Davies, and stealing therefrom a great coat, two coats, two waistcoats, two trowsers, a pair of boots, two shirts, a comforter, two shawls, two pocket handkerchiefs, and iwo pairs of stockings, the property, of UIØ, said Thomas Davies, at L;a dilofane. Both pri- soners pleaded guilty. There was a former con- viction against George Jones, and he was sentenced to 12 months hard labor, and the other to 6 months hard labor. OATS STEALING. Jacob Jones, haulier, was charged with stealing two bushels of oats, and a sack, the property of Joseph and Crawshay Bailey, E qrs., at the parish of Llanelly. on thj 24th D c., 1.868. Mr. S. B. Evans prosecuted, and Mr. Jones, Ahergavenny, defended the prisoner..The jury found the prisoner Not Guilty. THURSDAY. FRAUD.—Elizabeth IVillia" was charged with unlawfully and knowingly, by certain false pretence,' obtaining one basket, of the goods and chattels of John Rees, with intent to defraud, at Penderyn, oh the 1st of October, 1866. Mr. T. Bishop pro- secuted. Mr. Gam"s, having stated the case, called Jane Rees, a little gjrl 11 years of age, who, tn being examined as to the nature of an oath, and having satisfactorily explained, deposed that- she remem- bered the prisoner calling on her mother oh the 1st October, and told witness that she had met her mother on the road who told her that she should have the loan of a basket. Witness asked lijer where she,was going to take it; she said j^tp there, to fetch a few apples witness itsked her when she world return it; prisoner said directly, with some apples for witness she had the basket but never 1, ever returned it, had not seen the prisoner before that day- Margaret Rees deposed She is the wife of pro- sector and lives at Penderyn on the day named she met the prisoner on the road to Hii,w;iin;p.ri- soner never spoke to her, consequently she,never promised her the lend of the basket; it was Worth 3s. 6d!; it has never been found don't ktiow the prisoner. Joh Jones, a police sergeant stationed at Cefn- coed Cymmer, depqsr-l that from information he received he went to Neath on the 25th of October er and found the prisoner at the station charged her with the offence, which she denied and said that she had not been at Penderyn for two years after- wards she said for one year; could not find the basket; she was taken before the magistrates and committed for trial. Prisoner declined saying anything only that she "hoped the Jury would do their best*'—which caused some laughter.—The jury almost immedi- ately found the prisollerGlIilty and she was sen- tenced to 2 months hard labour. WATCH STEALING.—Evan Evans, mason, was charged' with stealing a silver watch, the property of David Powell, at-Llanhamlach, in the month of June, 1866. Mr. T. Bishop prosecuted. Pleaded guilty.—Sentenced to 6 months hard labor. A;sAuix.Leiv.s Lawrence and Rees Davies, colliers, were, charged with violently assaulting, wounding, illtreating, and occasioning actual bodily harm, in company with each other, to one Caroline Haines, widow, at Llanelly, on the 8th of October, 1866. The bill was ignored against Davies. Mr. T. Bishop prosecuted, and Mr. S. B. Evans defended the prisoner. Several wit; e -s were ex- amined, after which, the chairman summed up, and the jury returned ».-verdict of Guilty.—Sen- tenced to 12 calendar months hard labor.. WOUNDING AND MAIMING.—James Earsman, ■ shepherd, (on bail,) was charged with feloniously and maliciously maiming arid wounding a certain sheep, the property of John James, ut the parish of Talgarth, in the hamlet of Grwneyfechun, on the lyth November, 18U6- j f .1ii. ■ i K "I LARCENY.—Thomas Freeman, soap-boiler, fas charged wltb feloniously stealing a sbswl of .he value of five shillings, the property of Ann Craw- ley, at Crickhowelf, on the 7th November, 1866. RECEIVING. STOLEN GOODS.—Jane Lewis (on bail) was charged with stealing two bushels of oats, ani a sack, the property of Joseph and Crawshay Bailey, Esqrs., at Llanelly, on tiie24th December, 18.66. She was also, charged with receiving the said oats and sack, ,well- knowing that they were stolen goods.

BRECON VOLUNTEERS.. PRESENTATION TO SERGEANT CAIRNS. I.. On Wednesday evening last a supper took place at the Star. Inn, in this town, to present Drill- instructor, Sergeant Cairns, with a very handsome rg time-piece, as a marriage token of the esteem for his untiring-energy in making the corps second to none. The present was got up by voluntary con- tributions amongst the Volunteers of No. < 1 Oom,. pany alone, and was provided by Sergeant L.- IW- Price of Castle-street, who displayed superior taste in his selection of the article for the occasion the timepiece stand sounder a glass shade, with two doves oh the top of the works,and Cupid suspended on a chain acting for the pendulum, not as pendu- lums generally go, from right to left, but front to back. The chair was occupied by Jrtlin Prothero, Esq., ex-Mayor, and about 40 friends sat down to a most excellent repast, provided by the hostess,"Mrs. Meredith. After the cltftb^Wrtte^re^ moved the Chairman gave the usual ^layaij aria patriotic toasts, and then proceeded with th^fdatet of the evening, and, in a lengthy addres^said that it gave him great pleasure to have the honour of, presiding over the meeting on such an occasion, that the testimonial which he was about topresent to him (Sergeant Catms) did credit to him, inasmuch, as it was evidence of the high esteem in which he was <. held by his Company, and he hoped. it would bei. handed down to posterity as an heirloom in hwt family. Segeant Cairns acknowled the gift in very suitable terms. The company enjoyed thetnsefaces for some time with toast and soug and the merry meeting terminated.

An inquest was held at the New Inn, Watton, in this town, yesterday ^Friday), beiore Henry Maybery, Esq., coroner, and a respectable jory* of which Mr. Edward Williaiu3, Watton, was fortt. man, on the body of Samuel Th unas Leonard, six years of a,,e, the child of IIjury William Leonard, messenger at the Brecon and Merthyr Railway Office. CHRISTMAS CHARITY. SEASONABLE BENEVOLENCE/ Colonel and Mrs. Church Ptirce; ofFfrwdgrecK, on Christmas-eve gave to 22 'of the poorest people in. the parish of Llanspyddid. a loaf of bread,1* quarter of a pound of tea, one pound of sug*r, and one cwt. of coal each and on New Years Eve they gave also to 32 of the p^or inhabitant* of St. David, St. John, and St.'Mary's, Brecon,' a loaf of bread, ii packet. of tea, and, one poduo.' of* sugar each. Weztre als,, informed that they purport shortly giving away some coal. This good lady and gentleman are continually bestowing gifts at Dan* spyddid, Merthyr.Cynog, or St. David's, Brecon, of bread, tea, sugar, flannel petticotta, flaunel shirts, and also coals. SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.— Oil Saturay evening last, as Mr. Price, ofWemddu Farm, in the parish of Sr. David, Brecon, was re- turning h-vne from market, about seven o'clock in the evening, on a spirited pony, he overtook a. miller's gaiubo, about 50 yards above Ffrwdgrecb cottages, in a dark part of the road, and as he was trotting fast at the time he did 110. observe the vehicle until the pony came in contact with it, and so great was tbe force that she broke her windpipe on the .pot and fell backwards, her rider being pitched forward on to the miller's bags without re- ceiving anv injury.
