DR. WALTERS YN GYRU Y PARCH. EMLYN JONES I GORNEL. GOHEBIAETH ADEILADOL. Er's peth amser mae ymdrafodaeth wedi cy- meryd lie mewn gwahanol newyddiaduron o berthynas i nifer y pregethwyr Ymneillduol sydd wedi gadael eu capeli ac ymuno a'r Eglwys. Ymhlith y rhai a anfonodd lythyr i newyddiadur Radicalaidd a gyhoeddir yn Nghaerdydd, ceir y Parch. W. Emlyn Jones, Treforis, yr hwn a haerai ei fod yn gwybod am bregethwr Ymneillduol oedd wedi cael ei anog i ymuno a'r Eglwys, ac hefyd fod addewid wedi ei gwneyd y ceid dyrchafiad. Pan ymddangosodd y llythyr yn y South Wales Daily Neivs ddydd Mawrth cyn y diweddaf, galwyd sylw yr onwog Parch. Dr. Walters, periglor Llansamlet, ato, ac anfonodd y gwr parchedig lythyr yn ddioed atiy Parch. W. Emlyn Jones, a dengys yr atebiad a gafwyd pa mor ddisail yw haeriadau rhai pregeth- wyr Ymneillduol yn y newyddiaduron Radicalaidd. Ofnwn niweidio y gwreiddiol drwy gyfieithu y llythyrau, ac felly dodwn hwy yn Saesneg fel y cawsant eu cyhoeddi yn y Western Mail ddydd LIun diweddaf:— The Vicarage, Llansamlet, Glamorganshire, 9th May, 1888. Dear Mr. Jones,—I had overlooked your letter in the South Wales Daily News of yesterday till my attention was called to it to-day. May I ask you for a more defi- nite description of the offices held by those Church officials by whom Welsh Nonconformist ministers Oi late years, have been invited to deny their Noncon- formity, and to seek Holy Orders." Promises of im- mediate ordinatijn could only have effect when made by a bishop. Your assertion, as it stands, seems to me very vague and indefinite. I ask this on public grounds, with the view of ascertaining the value and weight of the "invitations and promises" to which you refer. If you caniiot give them all, you say that you know of one to whom such an invitation has been given, and that you are prepared to produce the name." Such being the case, I need no further apology.—Very truly yours, THOMAS WALTERS. The Rev. W. Emlyn Jones. Memorial Hall, Farringdon Street, London, ilch May, 1888. Dear Dr. Walters,—By "Church officials I meant clergymen of the Church of England. By promises of immediate ordination I meant assurances that there would be no difficulty in the way. I am sorry I could not, owing to absence from home, reply per return to your letter.—I am, yours very truly, W. EMLYN JONES. Rev. Dr. Walters. The Vicarage, Llansamlet, Glamorganshire, 11th May, 1888. Dear Mr. Jones,—Inasmuch as I asked you for in- formation on public grounds," you will not, perhaps, be surprised that I send our correspondence for publica- tion, and the more especially so as it has arisen from a published letter of yours on a public question, for which you thought the time had now arrived when publicity should be given to it." I thought it well, in the first place, to try to ascertain from you the basis on which your statement was founded, with the view of determining the value to be attached to it. The public will now have an oppor- tunity of foiming a judgement as to the nature and character of the "invitations" and "promises of im- mediate ordination alleged to have been given. I might add that, while every effort seems to be made to throw discredit on the statement that a large num her of Welsh Nonconformist ministers have of late years expressed a wish to be admitted to Holy Orders in tLe Church," the impression on my mind is that nothing has yet been advanced to disprove that allegation. The number of those who have realised that wish may be comparatively few, while it might be very possible that the number of those who applied for admission might be many. It does not necessarily follow that the one bears any given proportion to the other. Be that, however, as it may, no clergyman of the Church of England has the power or the authority to promise immediate ordination;" and the "assurances that there would be no difficulty in the way might, therefore, be taken for what they are worth. I can only regret that your first letter should have been published with no more solid or substantial foundation whereon to rest.— Ever sincerely yours, THOMAS WALTERS. The Rev. W. Emlyn Jones. Nid oes angen i ni wneyd unrbyw sylwadau ar y llythyrau uchod ar hyn o bryd diau y cawn gyf- leustra i drafod yr holl gwestiwn cyn hir, er gwrthbrofi haeriadau gelynion yr Eglwys. 0
