PLAYING A JOKE ON THE PREMIER.
PLAYING A JOKE ON THE PREMIER. The other morning the official quietude of the Treasury was terribly disturbed. There arrived through the prosaic medium of the parcels post a small deal box about sixteen inches by five, care- fully wrapped in brown paper. It was addressed to the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, Esq. The box went in the ordinary routine to the omniscient Hamilton, who, not liking the look of the parcel, sent for the hall porter to open it. This the porter flatly declined to do he had a large family, and so forth.. Thereupon Mr Secretary Hamilton held a c(; with the chiefs of the Treasury, who d«cui-w.i unanimously that the proper people to investigate the matter would be the police. A light cart with springs was requisitioned, and the terrible little box carefully taken over to Scotland- yard, But it fared no better there than across the road. The Chief Clerk would have nothing to do with it, and called in Assistant-Commissioner Colonel Pearson, who was seized with a happy idea. The Criminal Investigation Department is the proper place for it. So the box was carefully taken over to Mr Munro, who tackled the. terror by the aid of a dozen policemen. For half an hour no one could be found to untie the string; at last a constable emulous of Cole, and with an eye to the Albert medal, boldly cut the twine, and nothing happened. Then the lid was raised with a chisel, and some suspicious sawdust found. A little of this, after half an hour's consultation, was gently placed upon the office fire, when it burnt after the manner of sawdust. This emboldened the police, who had been increased in numbers, and the hero of the occasion thrust one finger deep into the box amid dead silence. He was not blown up; his fino-er came out raihovmed. At last the courage of °the division r.uilied fever heat, the sawdust was poured oat. a small brown parcel dis- covered. Did it contain clockwork ? Anxious ears listened, bat no sound broke upon the official stillness the parcel was untied, and eventually a toy tomahawk, with an inscription attached, was found. It was an appeal to the Premier to "dig up the a,ve o: war, to bury the pipe of peace." The little axe, which, by the way, was well made, was sent over to Downing-street, so Scotland-yard and the Treasury sleep peacefully again upon their respective desks.
THE AFGHAN DIFFICULTY.
THE AFGHAN DIFFICULTY. The ultimatum of the Russian Government was despatched from here on Sunday by a special om- cial in the Foreign Office. The ultimatum should arrive in London this (Tuesday) morning. I understand that the Russian Government de- mands from that of England an immediate answer as to whether it is prepared to accept the first boun- dary proposition of Russia. If the British Govern- ment declines to accept that proposition, the Russian troops on the Afghan frontier will receive nstant orders to march upon Herat.

THE ROYAL GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.-At a meeting of this Society last Tuesday evening, at the University of London, under the presidency of Lord Aberdare, a paper, written by Mr Perkins, who accompanied Mr Everard F. im Thurm in an ascent of Mount Roraima, British Guiana, was read by Mr Freshfield, one of the honorary secretaries. A brief letter from Mr im Thurm to Sir Joseph Hooker, who originated the expedition, was also read, in which the writer, who was buffering from fever and ague, states that the plateau was by no means the isolated spot it was supposed to be, but, owing to the difficulty of bringing up hammocks and provi- sions, it was impossible thoroughly to explore it for r.ithan a short distance. The vegetation was m -t 'nderful, but somewhat scanty and dwarf, j., ,(;.m:ó;L between three and four hundred speci- fe; some living plants. The paper of Ivli Perains, who was present, but suffering from a severe cold, which prevented him reading, dealt with the journey from George Town on the 14th of October last until the return of the party on January 31. The height of the mountain was 8,600 feet, and several smooth pebbles found embedded iii the living rock on the summit pointed to its having been submerged some long passed time. The Chairman explained that the expedition, which had been suggested by Sir Joseph Hooker, had been carried out under the auspices of the Royal Geo- graphical Society, the Royal Society, and the British Association. He had no doubt that it would be followed by other explorations in the same quar- ter. Sir Joseph Hooker said he had no doubt tiiat the results obtained, ethnological, botanical, geolo- gical, and zoological, would more than justify the expedition, which had been so ably carried out by Mr im Thurm and Mr Perkins. A vote oi thanks to the latter gentleman for his paper concluded the proceedings.
