Our issue of to-day contains particulars of several excursions from Tenby by the Pembroke and Tenby and Great Western Railway Companies. A two-days' cricket match will be played on the Tenby Ground on Tuesday and Wednesday next, Tenby v. the Pembroke-Dock Garrison, for the benefit of R. Berkeley, the professional and ground man. On Wednesday afternoon the Band of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry will be present; and on the completion of the Garrison Match a Lady's Match will be played between an eleven selected from the combined teams. In the evening there will be a dance in the Royal Assembly Rooms, on which occasion the orchestra will be supplied by the Regimental Band. The contractors, Messrs J. and D. Davies, have completed their contract in connection with the new landing slip. The slip extends from the Castle Point a distance of 80 feet. There will be a concert in the Board School, Saundersfoot, this evening, in which several Tenby amateurs will take part. The Rev. Thomas Kirkby and the Hon. J. L. Hulett, member of the Natal Legislature, will preach in the Wesleyan chapel on Sunday next. We understand that it is intended to present the Rev G. E. Warlow, curate of St. Mary's, with a testimonial on his departure from Tenby for his new curacy in Regent's Park. Subscriptions will be received at either of the local banks, is y Mr E. Watson, Ripley House; or at the "Observe Office, Tenby. ———— A concert will be given, under the direction of Mr Herbert J. Allen, in the Royal Assembly Rooms on Thursday, the 12th inst., in aid of the funds of the Tenby Creche. Mr Herbert J. Allen, formerly H.M. Consul in China, will lecture on "China and the Chinese," illustrated by dissolving views, in the room of the Young Men's Christian Association on Friday evening, the 13th inst., at eight o'clock.
MISS MAGGIE MORTON AT THE…
MISS MAGGIE MORTON AT THE ROYAL ASSEMBLY ROOMS. Miss Morton opened a short dramatic season here last night to a splendid house, with Robertson's bright comedy, "School," the principal parts in which were sustained by Miss Georgina Barbe, Miss Madge Merryweather, Messrs. Dobell, Baily and Wintour. It was an exceptionally good all- round performance, and the success of the comedy has induced Miss Morton (always with an eye to please her patrons) to produce on Tuesday next Robertson's famous comedy "Caste," in place of "The Visionary." To-night will be produced The Two Wives," a play with a moral; this piece has been played most successfully some 700 times by Miss Morton, who will on Saturday produce with special scenery, "Romeo and Juliet," and on Mon- day "The Merchant of Venice," with Mr Dobell as Romeo and Shylock."
MR WADE'S TWELFTH ANNUAL CONCERT
MR WADE'S TWELFTH ANNUAL CONCERT Mr Wade was fortunate on Monday in attracting to the Royal Assembly Rooms one of the largest audiences seen in Tenby for years. The occasion was his twelfth annual concert, and for this he had secured the services of Miss Eleanor Jenkins of the Royal College of Music, Miss Wade, Miss Hazell, Mr A. F. M. Custance, and the fine Band of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, whose perfor- mances, under the able baton of its talented con- ductor, Mr John Campbell, added greatly to the musical success of the affair; indeed, it has seldom been cur lot to listen to a finer rendering of Wagner's grand reception march and chorus, Hail bright abode," from his opera Tannhauser, than that given by this splendid body of performers. They were equally successful in other selections especially so in Weber's delightful "Invitation a la Valse," the light and shade of this composition being perfectly observed. The Band certainly added greatly to the distinct success of the concert. Miss Jenkins has a bright soprano voice, but there is room for improvement in her pronunciation. As an encore song she favoured the audience with a Welsh ballad. Miss Wade—sister to the bene- ficiary-greatly pleased the audience with a charm- ing rendering of Piccolimini's "Ora pro nobis," the organ accompaniment to which was artistically played by Mr A. F. M. Custance, whose humorous songs, a la Corney Grain," were irresistably droll. They were deservedly rewarded with three encores, which were, to the delight of the audience in all cases, good naturedly responded to. Mr Wade's voice seems to have returned to him, for he brought down the house with a fine rendering of "Stonewall Jackson," the accompaniment being played by the military band. Miss Hazell, formerly of Tenby, undertook the onerous duties of accompanist in a manner advantageous to the singer. There was no contest between the vocalist and the pianist, as is frequently the case: Miss Hazell did not lead, she followed and supported the singer. This is a lesson many so-called accompanists have yet to learn. Mr Wade is to be congratulated on giving great pleasure to a large audience with, we think, an equal amount of profit to himself.
FISH REPORT.
FISH REPORT. The trawl fishing this week has been fairly good, fair catches of soles, turbot, brill, gurnetts, whiting, plaice, conger, ray, &c., were landei. The Frolic of Brixham landed a good catch from the Irish channel, consisting chiefly of hake, conger, and a very large quantity of plaice. This was not very remunerative to the catcher. The Ethel also landed a good catch, consisting chiefly of soles and turbot, The Brixham fleet are nearly all cleared away; the remaining few have this week taken in ice to land at Milford, where prices are more remunerative. The strong S.E. winds having set in during the last few days very little mackerel line fishing was done, but a change of wind having taken place yesterday fair catches were landed from each boat. Wind northerly, fine, all the fishing boats are at sea.- Sept. 4, 1889.
