TENBY RESIDENT WITHDRAWS NOTHING. WHAT I HAVE SAID I HAVE SAID." Many of our readers will call td mind the state- ment made some considerable time since by Mr Smith, of Cresswell Street. Such interest has it awakened in Tenby and the neighbourhood that we have commissioned a reporter to interview Mr Smith, who withdrew nothing from his statement, but on the contrary made a most important addi- tion. "For months I suffered a great deal with kidney disease I had severe pains in my loins, and when I stooped they were like a knife-stab," says Mr Thomas Smith, of Cresswell Street, Tenby. At times I felt very ill, and I noticed that the water was thick. PHONOGRAPHIC LITERATURE. Mr F. J. TENBY EULOGISED. In a recent issue the Lewitham Borough News publishes an illustrated article on Tenby, in which the town is warmly eulogised as a health and pleasure resort. The writer of the article, which we understand was influenced by the Health Resorts Association of London, says :-Piotureil- quely situated on the coust of Carmarthen Bay in the Bristol Channel, it is remarkable that Tenby is not better known, but we doubt if there is a more delightful and snug seaside resort on the western coast. Dynbych-y-Pysgod—the little town of Fish-was a place of some importance before the days of history-making began. It seems to have been the scene of constant sieges and much bloodshed, even after it was colonised by the Flemish and English settlers, who founded Little England beyond Wales, and enabled Dynbych-y- Pysgod to blossom out into prosperous Tenby Regis—" the King's Town of Tenby," encompassed by strong walls and towers by Earl William de Valentine, Lord of Pembroke, to be sllbsequently strengthened and restored in 1457 by Major Thomas White. Queen Elizabeth took the Town of Towers and Walls under her gracious protec- tion, and Edward VI. sent the loyal burgesses a fresh charter adorned with a curious archiac por- trait of himself. So that it will be seen that Tenby has loomed large in the history of this country in the past. The are few pleasanter places in the United Kingdom than Tenby of the King," the sunniest spot in Little England beyond Wales." Visitors to Tenby need have no fear of even the roughest and most boisterous of gales, as, securely sheltered by the high ground of the Ridgeway, they enjoy, across the landlocked waters of Carmarthen Bay, a delightful view of the coast of Gowerland and the more distant high- lands of North Devon, while Caldey Island lies like a breakwater against the waves of the open channel. Last, but not least, one nnds at Tenby broad expanses of firm, dry, golden sand. Ample facilities are provided for all out-door amusements. The little resorts of Saundersfoot and Penally, and the huge cave, Hoyle's Mouth," leading to a series of subterranean chambers, and said to con- nect with Wogan Cave at Pembroke Castle, are within walking distance. Such is a brief outline of the charms of the town. The sea front, it may be noted, has none of the monotony of so many of the vaunted health resorts. It is varied and picturesque. On the north side lofty and rugged cliffs enclose a sandy bay and sheltered promenade leading to the Harbour, the approach to which is by a tree-shaded zig-zag pathway. The Harbour is between the southern end of the north bay and the old pier, where commences the Castle Hill, with its grassy undulations and its well-kept paths, surmounted by the ruins of the old Castle. From the northern side the Royal Victora Pier is reached. The south sands extend for two miles from the western side of Castle Hill to Giltar Point, a rocky headland marking the commence- ment of a continuous line of bold and precipitous cliffs extending to Milford Haven. From the Castle Hill and St. Catherine's Rock lovely views are obtained of the coasts of Carmarthenshire, Glamorganshire, and distant Devon. The old Town Walls are of considerable height and well preserved, and include five massive drum towers, two square towers, with corbelled parapets, and one or two gateways. Prominent among the unique attractions of Tenby is the curious belt of trees skirting the sloping cliffs on the north side. The visitor who wishes to have as uninterrupted a view as possible of the sea will find what he requires on the south cliff, upon which the Espla- nade is built. But if he prefers a varied outlook of mingled sea, distant mountains, and rocky cliffs, partly screened from his view by beautiful trees and shrubs, he should locate himself in the Norton, the Croft, or the northern end of the High Street. In the town itself there are many objects of interest, and in fair weather or foul the visitor will find agreeable occupation for his time, and after due inspection of them he can go in for bathing, fishing, canoeing, tennis, cricket, croquet, golf, picnics, prawning, and boating, whilst for those who enjoy otter hunting there is a pack of hounds which hunt the rivers in Pembrokeshire and adjoining counties. There are numerous pleasant walks and drives in the immediate neighbourhood, and the cyclist who appreciates a long spin can have a delightful time in going the round of the old castles and churches with which the county is studded. Further afield interesting places to visit are the Royal Dock-yard at Pem- broke-Dock, and Pembroke Castle. It is well worth while, too, to cross the three miles of sea to Caldey Island, the natural breakwater of Tenby on the south side. A mile in length and two- thirds of a mile in breadth, and containing about 450 acres of highly productive land and 100 acres of foreshore, this Island of Saints," as it has been called, has within its boundaries objects of the greatest interest. With reference to the climate of Tenby, it is generally admitted that with regard to a high sunshine record, Tenby can give points to its many_rivals, particularly in win- ter. This alone should make it popular as a place of residence to anyone suffering from bronchial, asthmatic, or tubercular affections. The colour of the sea, too, is beautiful beyond description. One hears and reads much of the Bay of Naples, but there are many who go to Tenby who declare that Carmarthen Bay is equal to it.
