THE ART OF MR. GEORGE HITCHCOCK. Among the many interesting features in the September issue of the Windsor Magazine is an appreciation of the Art of Mr George Hitchcock, fifteen of whose beautful pictures of sacred themes, and the more modern flower fields of Holland, which the artist has made his own, are finely reproduced. The writer says:—" At Julian's, Mr Hitchcock learnt to draw, and to draw well, but the training had not made him otherwise articulate; and, perfectly alive to this, he made his way to Diisseldorf, but here he again failed to find the help he needed. He was, how- ever, exactly in the right condition to absorb, exactly in the right state of mind and knowledge to receive impressions; and, turning now his steps to The Hague, he numbered himself among the the pupils of Mesdag. From Mesdag's famous recipe, Yellow ochre and black,' he rebelled, but he had the advantage of watching the master work and of learning much of his extraordinary power on canvas of physical expression, of his mastery over material, and of his extraordinary capacity for pursuing in a picture the original aims with which he started it. Having worked for some time with Mesdag, George Hitchcock felt it was time to free himself altogether from leading-strings accordingly he went to Edgmond, a village on the North Sea, and set himself to the task of painting from Nature."

G.W.R. THROUGH SERVICES FROM SOUTH WALES. The various through services which the Great Western Railway have been instrumental in ar- ranging have, since their inauguration, proved of great benefit to the travelling community and in the interests of residents in South Wales who are unacquainted with those having connections from this district a brief sketch of the more important will not, perhaps, be misplaced. Taking first the through service to Newcastle-on- Tyne via Banbury, there are four trains daily on week-days from Cardiff and Newport to New- castle-on-Tyne and vice versa. The 10.20 a.m. from Cardiff and 9.30 a.m. from Newcastle have through carriages with luncheon and tea cars attached. The new through service from Swansea to the East Coast is served by a train leaving Cardiff at 12.20 a.m., and Newport 10.40 a.m., running through to Yarmouth without change of carriage and arriving at 5.55 p.m. In the opposite direc- tion leaving Yarmouth at 10.5 a.m. Newport is reached at 5.53 p.m. and Cardiff at 6.15 p.m.; from thence the train proceeds to Swansea. A frequent service is afforded by the through route from Fishguard Harbour to Portsmouth. Eight trains daily are run on week-days, and two on Sundays, from Cardiff to Portsmouth and vice versa. An outstanding feature of the above services is the direct communication which is afforded from Newcastle, the East Coast, Portsmouth, and in- termediate stations with Ireland via Fishguard. It is gratifying to think that South Wales is now firmly established as the great highway not only between Ireland and England, but also between New York and England, with Cunard Liners calling at Fishguard.

ENTITLED TO TENBY'S CONFIDENCE. Anything that is again and again heartily en- dorsed by people is assuredly entitled to Tenby's confidence. Week after week we read cases like the following, where neighoars speak out frankly and unreservedly in the hope that their expe- rience may be the means of bringing relief to others. Mrs J. A FAMOUS FAMILY OF CRICKETERS. In an interesting anecdotal article on Brothers of the Cricket Field," which appears in the Sep- tember Windsor Magazine, accompanied by many portraits, Sir Home Gordon, Bart., writes:- "Worcestershire has not inaptly been called Fostershire, and it is enormously indebted to the sons of the Malvern schoolmaster. Major W. L. Foster is a defensive bat of formidable capacity. Mr R. E. Foster, the finest bat of the family, possesses almost every quality-strong defence, self-restraint, free, attractive style, and wonderful wrist-shots. He has carried pulling to a fine art. As for his work in the University match and for the Gentlemen, it will never be erased from the golden page of cricket lore. In his first Test Match at Sydney he compiled the huge innings of 287, and, after a shaky start, his play was beyond criticism. Mr Basil Foster, who is on the stage, is a lively run-getter, and more might be seen with advantage of Mr M. K. Foster, who only needs to get going in order to show the ability in him, for at Malvern he did as well as any of his elder brothers. All the Fosters have been splen- did fieldsmen, the elders, perhaps, specializing at short slip. One, the ex-Oxonian, Mr G. N. Foster, is now in India."

Readers of the September issue of the Windsor Mazazine will be delighted with the beautiful set of pictures by Maud Earl of dog life and character which accompanies an article on Terriers and Toys." The writer says :—" The Pekinese is a diminutive spaniel, generally fawn coloured, with a curly tail and a long coat. It is a great fovourite with many ladies, requires a great deal of atten- tion, and failing that attention, even in a slight degree, is given to retire promptly to another world. They say that the Pekinese spaniel deserves its name, because it came originally from Pekin, being brought over here after one of the expeditions that the Powers of Europe have made from time to time in the alleged interests of the higher civilization. Certainly these dogs are as costly as the wealthiest collector can desire, and though they are said to have many attractions for the owner, their charms are certainly hidden from the stranger who ventures to approach them."

A GOOD DOG STORY. The September Windsor Magazine contains a very interesting article on Terriers and Toys," which is accompanied by no fewer than sixteen beautiful reproductions from Maud Earl's famous paintings of dog life and character. The writer says:—" Dealing with valuable toy dogs, there is a good story that is worth telling again. When the late Li Hung Chang was visiting London, a leading light of the Stock Exchange, who lived less than 100 miles from Carlton House Terrace, made up his mind to send a valuable present to the great Chinese diplomat. After careful con- sideration, he decided he could not do better than send him two of his most valuable toy dogs. They were selected with great care and sent to Li Hung Chang, from whom a letter of thanks was received a few days later. Your gift is much appreciated,' wrote the celebrated Chinese envoy, 'but un- fortunately my age and health compel me to adopt a very rigid diet. Under these circumstan- ces, I directed that the dogs should be prepared for some members of my staff, who have enjoyed them very much.'
