MR. ROOSEVELT'S IMPRESSIONS OF THE AFRICAN GAME COUNTRY. Next morning we were in the game country, and as we sat on the seat over the cow-catcher it was literally like passing through a vast zoological garden. Indeed no such railway journey can be taken on any other line in any other land. At one time we passed a herd of a dozen or so of great giraffes, cows and calves, cantering along through the open woods a couple of hundred yards to the right of the train. Again, still closer, four water-buck cows, their big ears thrown forward, stared at us without moving until we had passed. Hartebeests were everywhere; one herd was on the track, and when the engine whistled they bucked and sprang with ungainly agility and galloped clear of danger. A long-tailed straw- coloured monkey ran from one tree to another. Huge black ostriches appeared from time to time. Once a troop of impalla, close by the track, took fright; and as the beautiful creatures fled we saw now one and now another bound clear over the high bushes. A herd of zebra clattered across a cutting of the line not a hundred yards ahead of the train the whistle hurried their progress, but only for a moment, and as we passed they were already turning round to gaze. -IFrom "African Game Trails by Theodore Roosevelt in the October Scribner."

DOAN'S INQUIRY RESUMED. ANOTHER TENBY REPORT. The representative specially commissioned to investigate the Tenby cures of kidney and bladder troubles by Doan's backache kidney pills, reported in the local press during the past few years, for- wards the following statement by a Tenby woman. Mrs Mary John, of 13, St. Domingo Place, is a native of Tenby, well known and respected in the town. It is worthy of note that Mrs John has resided at her present address all her life. She says :—" I was a great sufferer for years my limbs were swollen, I often came over dizzy, and my sight became dim-there seemed to be little specks-floating before my eyes. I also had severe shooting pains in the small of my back; they were very sharp at times. The doctor was unable to do anything for me, and my suffering went on until I used Doan's backache kidney pills. From the first these pills made an improvement in my health, and it was not long before I lost the pains. In fact, I felt better in every way, and I can truly say that Doan's backache kidney pills are splendid. (Signed) (Mrs) M. John." Over 7 years later, Mrs John said:—" Con- sidering that I am getting on in years, my health is still good. I always keep some of Doan's back- ache kidney pills by me they have kept me well." A FAMOUS FESTIVAL. The October Windsor Magazine contains a very interesting article on the Birmingham Festival, accompanied by many portraits of the artists engaged. The contributor says In 1834 the first Festival was held in the new Town Hall, and the organ, the finest instrument then in existence, was used for the first time. The following Festi- val was remarkable for the first appearance of Mendelssohn in Birmingham to conduct St. Paul.' This engagement was due to the enter- prise of Moore, who went specially to Berlin to interview Mendelssohn. The composer himself made his dibut in Birmingham as conductor of his I Midsummer Night's Dream' music on the Tuesday evening. The next day he directed the performance of I St. Paul,' and on the Friday be- fore leaving the town, he played Bach's prelude ancffugue in E flat. I St Paul' was not new, of course, to England, for it had been performed in Liverpool in 1836, and twice in London in 1837, before the date of the Festival. In a letter to his mother, Mendelssohn gave an interesting account of his impressions at Birmingham. He was par- ticularly struck by the enthusiasm with which he was received."

THE GRAMOPHONE IN STAMBOUL The coffee-houses are the most characteristic feature of Stamboul streets during the nights of Ramazan. While they naturally abound on the main thoroughfares, no quarter is without a few of these centres of social life. They are oftenest a single room, lighted by kerosene, with benches and tables around the walls, a corner where the confedji concocts his beverages, and a window from which the outside world may be admired. In mild weather they overflow into it, under an awning or a trellis of grape vines. There the habitues sit a great part of the night over a cup of black coffee or a glass of tea, their feet as often as not tucked under them, holding a cigarette or the coil of a water pipe, engaged in the conversation which has given these places the name of School of Knowledge. Schools of knowledge they must be indeed to those capable of taking part in their councils. A foreigner, however, must usually content himself with admiring the gestures, cos- tumes, and faces of his convives, the courtesy with which they receive him, the brasses, china, rugs, and Arabic texts ornamenting the coffee-house, its view of the lighted street, and the formal enter- tainment which is likely to offer during Ramazon. -From" The Moon of Ramazan" by H.
