THE DOAN INVESTIGATION. EVIDENCE FROM SAUNDERSFOOT. Our investigations into the cures of kidney and bladder troubles by Doan's backache kidney pills reported in the Tenby press some years ago, are continued to-day, and it is gratifying to find that the same hearty spirit continues to prevail. Those who told of their cures years ago stand by them to-day. Miss M. Morgan, of Wooden Hill, near Saun- dersfoot, Tenby, says:—"For twelve months I suffered a great deal with pains in my back; they were particularly bad when I stooped and tried to straighten myself afterwards. THE OLD, OLD STORY. Late that afternoon I met Frederick Went- worth, up the long hill past the Glen. He stopped, with a short greeting word, and took my books for me. And never shall I see those hills, that white road shining in the sunset, that falling gleam of leaf and light, that I shall not wait ttnd listen for the melody that blows forever through their golden dream.- Across the hills and far away, Beyond their utmost purple rim, And deep into the dying day The happy princess follow'd him." And the magic rang so true, so clear,- that when he stopped at the crest of the last long shining hill, and stood there, his strong face ashen white save for the angry burn, and told me that he loved me, that he had loved me from the first hour his eyes had seen me Why, it was only my unspoken thought come true. THE CATTLE HERDS OF AUTRALIA. Beef cattle are a big industry in Australia. The Durham is an easy first, with the Hereford next; but the Devon, the Aberdeen-Angus and other breeds have many adherents, The cattle of Australia now number between 9,000,000 and 10,000,000, an increase of nearly 6,000,000 in the past 50 years. The great breeding stations are chiefly in the rich tropical northern latitudes of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Here country is cheap and abundant, the rainfall is high, rivers are plentiful, the soil is rich, and the feed luxuriant. By-and-bye, lots of this land will probably go to the butter maker, but in the meantime it is famous as a money spinner at cattle raising. The stations are measured in hundreds of square miles, fences are few, very little labour is required, expenses are low, and at the beef values of recent years profits have been extremely good. No part of Australia has been more remunerative than this wide and and fertile north no part of the continent offers the man who is called by lonely outside places, where he can pursue fortune in almost unbroken solitude, such a chance to realise his desire. Im- mense herds of the wild shy northern cattle are always on their long road across Australia to the markets of the south. They come down with their drovers into southern Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, where, as a rule, they are sold in small lots to pastoralists and farmers who fatten them for the butchers or for export. This "overlanding" across great stretches of country often relieved by very little feed and water calls for the highest skill of the bushmen, and the names of some of Australia's most famous drovers are familiar to every school boy of that country.

t MR. MASKELYNE'S REPLY TO SIR HIRAM MAXIM. It will be remembered that an interesting challenge was recently issued by Sir Hiram Maxim to Mr J. N. Maskelyne, to reproduce the tricks of an imitator of the celebrated Davenport Brothers named Mr Fa.y. In response to this challenge Mr Maskelyne replied that if Sir Hiram Maxim would produce a "medium" of his own choice who would perform Mr Fay's tricks, Mr Maskelyne would show him how they were done. Sir Hiram Maxim, being unable to find anyone now living capable of performing these tricks, was unable to continue his challenge on these lines, still main- taining, however, that Mr Maskelyne would be unable to reproduce the tricks performed by Mr Fay as described in his article. Mr Maskelyne has prepared for publication in the Strand Jlaga- zine two illustrated articles showing not only exactly how Mr Fay performed his tricks, but also the secret of the much more puzzling tricks of the original Davenport Brothers, a secret now made known to the public for the first time. The first of these most interesting articles appears in the Strand's Christmas number.

A PREHISTORIC ZOO. Ii One of the most amazing articles in the Strand Magazine Christmas Number is an account of the latest attraction at Mr Carl Hagenbeck's famous animal park at Stettingen, near Hamburg. A portion of this famous park is now given over to a series of wonderful and striking life-size repre- sentations of the great monsters that inhabited I the earth in the distant past, built up in cement by a well-known Continental animal sculptor, Mr J. Pallenburg. In the Christmas Number of the Strand Mr Harold J. TERRIBLE PLIGHT AT LAUGHARNE. EXCITING ESCAPE FROM DEATH. Last week's sudden south-easterly storm caused, for a time, consternation in Laugharne. One of the boats engaged in the cockle industry failed to return. The boat was Mr Alma Rowlands's Flirt, and was in'. charge of his son William, aged 18, and an older sister, Maggie, whilst a nephew, W. Jones, aged 15, and a helper, Kate Morgan, were also aboard. After leaving the cockle bed, which is now on the other side of the Towy estuary, all went well until a point on the Laugharne river, locally known as Harry Whit," was reached. Here was a dangerous row of stream stakes, and in trying to avoid this obstruction the Flirt took ground, and almost immediately began to fill. Although young Rowlands lightened her of some of her cargo, she would not rise, and soon the tide was over her. The predicament of the party was most alarming. The night was dark, the wind blowing a gale, the spot quite deserted, and deep water on either side. They found temporary refuge on a bank, but with a fast flowing incoming tide their situation was still fraught with perli. Young Rowlands, divesting himself of his heavy sea boots and heavy clothing, struck out to find the shallowest crossing point. This having been done, his sister, nephew, and helper followed him, and were soon in a fast-running stream shoulder high. With a great effort and mutual assistance the party managed to win the opposite shore. They were still some miles from home, their clothing was drenched, and a keen wind blowing. Greatly fatigued and suffering much from cold, they at length reached the Ferry Rest House, and were ferried across the river, much to the relief of numerous friends and the family. They had, however, a marvellous escape from a terrible death.

OLD AGE PENSIONS IN AUSTRALIA The age qualification for pension in Australia is 65 years, or in the event of permanent incapacita- tion for work, 60 years. Power is given by the Act to fix the age qualification for women at 60 years instead of 65, but so far this has not been done. For an invalid pension the age qualification is the attainment of the age of 16 years if ac- companied by permanent incapacity for work. For an old age pension the residential qualification is twenty years, and for an invalid pension con- tinuous residence for at least five years is re- quired. In neither case, however, is continuous residenec in the Commonwealth deemed to have been interrupted by occasional absences aggregating not more than one-tenth of the total period of residence. The amount of pension is fixed by the Commissioner at such sum as he deems reasonable, but must not exceed jE26 per annum, nor such as will cause the pensioner's income, together with the pension to exceed JE52 per annum.
