HEAD OF A TOWN WITHOUT DEBT. Alderman N. W. Fairies-Humphreys, who has just been unanimously elected Mayor of Mont- gomery for the twelfth time, is the only surviving member of the first Montgomery Town Council, elected in 1882. He was elected the mayor of the borough in 1886, and the present is his fifth successive election. As previously stated in these columns, he will probably be the only Coronation- year mayor in the United Kingdom who also held office in the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria and in the year of the Coronation of King Edward. Montgomery has prospered under Alderman Fairles-Humphreys's guidance. The borough's indebtednesss in loans amounts only to JE24, and according to an offioi'al there was a sufficient balance in the bank at the end of the financial year to have justified the suspension of rates alto- gether for the time being. As it is, rates are ex- ceedingly moderate. So are rents. A four- roomed cottage with garden and outbuildings is to be had for Is. a week inclusive. Yet during Alderman Fairles-Humphreys's municipal oareer many local improvements have been carried out— a new water supply and public lighting scheme among others. The mayor belongs to an old Durham family. An ancestor was in 1602 the Mayor of Durham. Alderman Fairless-Hum- phreys went to Montgomeryshire fifty years ago as a medical practitioner. He married and assumed as an additional surname that of his wife. He is the owner of a considerable estate and has successfully farmed a portion of it him- self.
