- MUSIC IN TENBY.
MUSIC IN TENBY. The thanks of the people of this town are due to Mr. Gregory for his unwearied, judicious, and (it is only fair to add) disinterested efforts to bring within their reach a larger amount of really good music than it has hitherto been supposed possible to command at so great a distance from London. Our appetite and our taste cannot fail to be improved by the fare which he sets before us, and we may hope that the Musical Season Ilf Tenby will come to be recognized as one of its chief at- tractions. The Season began this year with two concerts to celebrate the re-opening of the As- sembly Rooms. The same artists who then minis- tered to our pleasure—Miss Galton, Signer Garcia, and Mr. Swift—have since given us a week of opera performances, excellently arranged, and put upon the stage with such care in the details, and such success in the effect, that when we consider the difficulties under which they worked, we can hardly say too much in acknowledgment of their exertions. It was no slight task to give a complete repre- sentation of such. an opera as "Faust," on a small scale; but this was achieved. Mr. Swift (who, we believed, organized the company) brought down some of the best chorus-singers from the Queen's Theatre and the whole of the music was conscientously given. The new operetta, Punch- inello," was also introduced to us. It is quaint, original, and pretty, and it was capitally played, the artists seeming to enjoy the fun which they created. Miss Galton's voice is sweet and penetrative; at present a little unequal, and wanting in volume; but she is very young, and her career is yet before her. She is a clever actress, arch and graceful, and throughly refined. Nothing could be prettier than her performance of the Jewel Song in "Faust;" but her delivery of the lovely phrases which poor Margarita sings afterwards at the window, and her singing and acting in the part of Lucia, shew that she possesses higher qualities. We congratulate her on her success at the New Royalty, in London, and cordially agree with the Alhr.nce.um, that it lei dnc to her ctquisitc taste and feeling." Mr. Swift is a tavourite in Tenby, where- his superb tenor voice needs (we quote the Times j on his performance of Lara) only to be heard to be admired." We think Edgardo his best < har- acter, inasmuch as it affords the widest scope for that en erg) and pathos which characterises both his singing and his acting. He was. however, excellent m Faust," where his delivery of some of the more expressive passages, such as, u If I pray there is none to hear." Thou lovely moon," and the crescendo with its crowning B m alt on the words, HI love thee," left nothing io be i desired. Signor Garcia's fresh and powerful baritone was delightful to listen to. His attitudes are most picturesque, and he gave, admirably, the fire; of Enrico, and the sarcasm and diabolical humour of Mephistophiles. His Clear the way was grand. We thought him less happy in "II Balen indeed Troealore seemed to us the least successful of the Troealore seemed to us the least successful of the operas, for the part of Leonora is not suited to Miss Galton, and Mr. Swift's mezza voce seemed to I us rather Loo forcible. But we purposely abstain from dwelling upon faults—a task always easy, generally ungracious, and requiring the least possible amount of musical judgment and kuow- 'I ledge. Where really good artists have done their best, we can but enjoy heartily and gratefully, and feel quite sure that they knew tb.Ir own shortcomings I much better than we do. Mrs. Galton played with much spirit and clcver- ness, aiv! must, we think, have been gratified by the exhibition of her daughter's talents. Mr. Bache's piano-forte playing is admirable. It was heard to advantage at the concert: it is perhaps a little too refined for the work which it I had to do in the opera week. I Next Saturday we anticipate a treat of a very 'I high order. Nothing can be better than the pro- gramme of the concert; and the chief performers Madame Sherrington, Mr. Cumnnngs. Mr. Patev, I and Mr. Blagrove—are too well known and ap- preciated for it to be necessary for us to sav any- I thing more than veil they are heartily welcome among us. We understand that it ,-s the intention of the Dl i members of the "United Service Dramatic Club" to give two performances in this town, one at the latter end of the race week, and another on the following Monday. We shall announce full parti- culars as soon as all the arrangements are com- pleted. From the well-known talents of these Amateurs, and from the great success with which they have repeatedly acted in England. Wales, and France, we have no doubt they will be well supported here. The proceeds, we believe, win be divided between the improvements on the Castle Hill, and perhaps the funds of the Life-boat. WORKING MEN'S CLUB -The Rev. G. N. Smith, Rector of Gumfreston, will deliver a lecture on Stonehenge," at the above rooms, this evening, commencing at 8 o'clock. On Saturday afternoon the band of the 62nd Regiment again played in the Croft Field, to a large number of tbe visitors and inhabitants. The programme was as ioltows :—" Exhibition March," (1862,) Aiibw; overture, "ampa," HenM; fan- tasia, Faust," Gounod: valse, "Kate Kearnv," Coote; fantasia, II Trovatore," Verdi; quadrille, | Morgano," ilcrlel; galop, "Love's Dream," Carey; God save the Queen." MARRIED,—On the 17th inst., at St. Mary's Church, Tenby, by the Ven. Archdeacon Clark, Mr. William Morris, of Pembroke, to Mary Ann, daughter of Mr. Thomas Penny, of this town. - TENBY CORPORATION.
TENBY CORPORATION. At a Special Meeting of the Town Council, on Friday last, present,—The Mayor; Aldermen Evans, Mason and Jeukins Councillors C. Allen end J. M. Sutton, Esqrs., Messrs T. Rees, W. Williams, G. Mends, G. Hughes. H. Birkin and W. Gibbs; The tolls of the markets, and several pkts of Garden ground, were ordered to be let by auction, on Saturday next. The Town C.ierk was ordered to write to the Secretary of the Pembroke and Tenby Rail WHY Company, and ascertain whether the purchase money for the land bought of the Corporation had hceu invested as previously arranged. The Council then sat as a Board of Health, ■when the Surveyor was ordered to prepare an Climate of the L'ost of laying down mains to convey the water from the public works to the back and front rows of Chimney Park. tetters were then read from Mr. Savage, and also from Mr. Brown, complaining of nuisances arising from pigs being kept close Lo their respec- tive dwelling houses. The Inspector was ordered to inspect the pre- mises, and report thereon to the next meeting. The Mayor tin M read a letter from the CIcik to the Local board of Health, tendering his resigna- tion. The Mayor said that he was quite jure that thoy would all deeply regret to lose the services of Mr Lock, who had held the office for so long a number of years, with credit to himself, and ad- vantage to the Council. He however considered the demand made by Mr. and Mrs Lock wab such that it must be resisted. He then read a let.ter from Mr. and Mrs. Lock's solicitor, asking whether the Board wouid join with them in ap- pointing a single arbitrator. He also read an extract from the circular of the late General Board of Health, recommending that the same person should be both Town Clerk, and Clerk to the Local Board of Health. Mr. Allen agreed with what the Mayor had elated, especially as to the importance of having the same person iur Town Clerk, and Clerk to the Local Board of Health. In conclusion, be pro- posed the following resolution :— I. The Local Board of Health regret that Mr. Loek persists in the assertion of a claim for com- pensation. which, in the opinion of the Board, is groundless, and which. alone rt-nders the resigna- tion ut his office of Clerk to the Board expedient or desirable. The Board is also of opinion that the < clerkship of the Board, and the Town Clerk- ship, should be held henceforth, as heretofore, by one individual; and therefore, before accepting Mr. Lock's resignation of one of those offices, requests bim to say if he is prepared to resign both." This was seconded by Mr. Mends, and carried unanimously. Mr. Jenkins maintained that they should be firm in resisting the demand, as they had sufficient evidence to .prove that the property in question, so far from being injured, was greatly improved by making the sewer. Mr Mason said that the arbitrator should i-o a barrister of good standing, as the matter in dispute was to a great extem a question of law. The Board admitted their liability to pay any damage that Mr. and Mrs. Lock had already sustained, but no damage, it was agreed on both sides, had as yet happened. What the iarge, claim was made for was, for some imaginary injury that might possibly arise at some iuture time. Ho questioned whether a part of the land through which the sewer passed, and for which compensation was claimed, did not belong to the Corporation, and was held by them from the Crown. This land formed a portion of the site of the old (own walls. These wails, (portions of which still exist,) ex- tended from the round tower in the front of No. 2, Rock Terrace, to very near that house, from whence they extended to the west side of South Cliff House, and then doubled back towards the sea. This land being crown property, he believed the Statirte of Limitation did not yet bar their claim to it; in fact, he maintained they had never, in contemplation of law, been out of possession of the town walls. Any way, it was an additional reason why their arbitrator should be a good lawyer. Mr. Allen objected to the appointment of a sur- veyor, as surveyors were more accustomed to settle railway cases, but was in favour of a barrister. He clearly explained to the Board how the dispute must be settled, and ended by proposing that The Local Be ard of Health deny that any damage has been sustained by Mr. and Mrs. Lock, but the Board will not object to refer the matter in dispute to a single arbitrator, and they beg to propose H. G. Allen, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, to be the arbitrator appointed for that purpose." This was seconded by Mr. Jenkins, and carried without a single dissentient voice. Mr. Mends stated that the general opinion of I the parish was, that the demand should be resisted, Mr. Jenkins said that a portion of the lawn in front of the Ivy Cottages was still the property of the Corporation. ( After some further discussion, in which Dr.lj Sutton and Mr. Rees took prominent parts, the! ^meeting broke up. At a Special Meeting yesterday, present,—The Mayor; Aldermen Evans, Mason, and Jenkins; Councillors C. Allen, Esq., Messrs. W. Williams, T Rees, G. Mends, and W. Gibbs; After the minutes had been read, the Chairman stated that, immediately after the last meeting, he had forwarded a copy of the resolutions then passed to Mr. and Mrs. Lock's solicitor, but had 'I not yet received any reply. The following letter, which had been received from the Town Clerk, was then read I Mr. William Lock begs to inform the Tenby Local Board of Health that, when he agreed to accept the office of Cierk to their Board, he did so Ion the understanding that, if he Was at any time desirous to resign it, he should be at liberty to do so. The office of Town Clerk, T?hich has been held by Mr. Lock for about thirty years, is a very different appointment, and in no way mixed up with the Clerkship of the Board of Health. Mr. Lock therefore begs to Inform the Board of Health that he has no intention whatever of resigning into the hands of the Town Council the Town Clerk- ship—Tenby, September 19, 186.5." A long discussion ensued, in which all the mem here joined, the general tenor of which was, that the same person must be Town Clerk and Clerk to the Local Board. Mr. Allen said that he hoped he was not out of order in mentioning what the Mayor had told him, that the Town Clerk expected compensation if he was deprived of his office. The Mayor—" Certainly not." Mr. Allen then proposed the following resolu- tion — The Local Board, of Health having heard read Mr. W. Lock's letter of the 19th inst., in which ho states that- he has no intention to resign the Town Clerkship, while he resigns the Clerkship of the. Local Board of Health, resolve, that a letter shall be written in reply to Mr. Lock, informing him that the Board adhere to their resolution of the loth, of requiring both appointments to be held by one and the same individual, and also that by 5 II and 6 Will. IV., c. 76, s. 58, the office of Town Clerk is held during pleasure-; and further, that it I has been the custom of the Town Council to elect their Town Clerk de novo on the 9th of November I of every year, and for the foregoing reasons the Board decline to accept Mr. Lock's resignation as the'e- Clerk." This was seconded by Mr. George Mends, and after some discussion was carried unanimously. The Chairman stated that the Inspector had enforced the removal of the pigs in Rocky Park, I and caused those in the Norton to be cleaned out. After it had been resolved that the Board meet again on Monday, the meeting separated.
jCORRESPONDENCE.
CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the Observer. Snt,-Can you inform the public when the bye- laws regulating the carriages let for hire are to be put in force? [am not tar from the truth when I say that, in the Square, where we are. obliged to submit to four carriages on the stand, we now have an additional three or four extra carriages standing about, or driving up and down the Square all day long. Why Is this? Can there be any peculiarity in the place, that when we are in possession of byc- laws for the especial purpose, we can no.. or will not put them in force? These carriages ply- ing for hire are, from their numbers, a decided nuisance in the Square, and I cannot understand why the residents in this part oi the town, who are rated and taxed in the same proportion as the other inhabitants of Tenby, should submit to the nuisanec of a cab stand in front of their doors, or at the option of the drivers, should have the addi- tional annoyance of three or four extra carriages standing about, or driving up and down the Square. Enlighten us upon the subject, and tell us whether these bye-laws, about which we heard so much, are a sham or o reality. We are ia doubt, and call upon you to help us to a decision. 1 am, your obedient Servant GEO. CHATER. Tenby, Sept. 20, 1S65. [The bye-laws having been confirmed by the Secretary of State, are now law in Tenby, and the Police should proceed against every one breaking tnese laws.
