JJENRY MORGAN, Who sprung from a branch of the Morgan family, settled at Lanrumney, Mon., was by common consent the boldest and most success- ful of the Buccaneers, whose terrible deeds in the Southern Seas set the whole of the Western World aflame in the latter part of the 17th century. jjlACT, NOT F I C T ION. AMONG THE MANY STIRRING JNCIDENTS of the Story are the following :— THE BUCCANEER ATTACK ON PUERTO DEL PRINCIPE. THE TORTURE AND STARVATION OF SPANISH PRISONERS. CAPTURE OF PORTO BELLO BY A NIGHT ASSAULT. BLOWING A GARRISON TO PIECES. THE TAKING OF MARACAIBO. DESPERATE FIGHT WITH THE SPANIARDS. CAPTURE OF THE CASTLE OF ¡ CHAGRE. I THE SACKING OF PANAMA. "MIss BRADDON is the Queen of the circulating libraries."—The Wwld. ISHMAEL. I have always ranked Miss BRADDON among the greatest benefactors of the present generation. When I read a novel I have no desire to b instructed or to be improved. I wish to be amused and there is not one of Miss BRADDON'S books which does not enlist the interest of the reader. They are sensational, as all good stories ought to be. They are no reproduction of everyday hfe. rfhe circullIstances narrated are exceptional, and yet the details are so well worked out that the improbable is made to appear pro- bable. What, however, surprises me is that, far from her inventive powers falling off, they seem to expand with each new novel, instead of—as is often the case with writers of fiction-all originality being ab- sorbed in technique and mannerisms. which has just appeared, is un- ouestionably one of her best novels. MISS BRADDON'S popularity as a novelist ought to be a lesson to the story-tellers of the day, who bore us with bread-and-butter trash, or with lengthy disquisitions between boys and • rls about the mysteries of the universe, and who «eem to pride themselves, like the needy knife"-grinder, upon having no story to tell.' Wn'h all the marvellous fertility of her «Bn MISS BRADDON'S hand has not lost pimniiif? neither has her fancy faded, nor ilower of invention suffered visible decline. But with the work of maturer years has been developed a riper style, tnht, discarding the fascinating element of mystery st.ll enthralls he reader by its pictures ot romance and .-n Dailv Chionicle. All her bad people men and women, come to «nef, and most ot them begin early to taste, and ultimately to j K tl (jitter that poisons the dram to the Freeman. -t. RHONDDA VV^ATER SUPPLY. TO THE EDITOX, k,iR, in yibiv or th- great iniDortance of tha aOove question to the dense population of the Rhonada you are perfectly juried in your siale- nient that the County Council should take tiie important declaration of its medical officer into serious consideration. This matter of the supply cf pnre and whole- some water nas been bor.,re the Council on more than one occasion and a Water Committee, has bsen appointed with tho object of securing for preset ana future geneiaiions in the "rc&t county of Glamorgan a supply from sources atrve the suspicion of contamination, and in mv opinion, the Council should refer this repurt to the said committee for further consideration with a vie,v to future action. Science has now demonstrated, according to this judg-menr, that human excreta at aysotuc: of a water supply does not contaminate ths watJ r! What progress science lias made! But is it not my object in this letter to criticise, but to suppcrt your contention that the Council should take the report of its medical officer into its consideration.—I am. &c., RICHARD MORRIS. THE CHURCHES. The English Unitarian Church at Highland. place, Aberdare, have invited Mr Jen It in Thomas, of tho University College of Walws, Aberystwyth, and previously of the Presbyterian Coik-se, Car- marthen, to become their pastor. We under- stand that Mr Thomas has accepted the in- vitation. The Rev J. Phillips celebrated the thiril year of his pastorate of the Carmarthen-road Congrega- tional Church, Swansea, on Thursday evening, ivhen statistics were produced, which showed very satisfactory progress. Iu the course cf the pro- ceedings Mr John Phillips, on behalf of the male members of the congregation, presented to Mr Phillips a set of valmlble books, and Mrs Jchnsou, on behalf of the lady members, presented to him a carved oak revolving study chair. Mrs Phillips was also thi) recipient of two pretty presents. The Wesieyan Methodists of Newport are en- la ging their Victoria-avenue Chape), at Maindee, at a cost of £3,500, towards which over £1.500 has been subscribed. The improvements wiil include the erection cf new class-rooms, and a llew grand organ, whilst the chapel itself will be enlarged to afford sitting accommodation for over 800 people. The work is in an advanced state, and is expected to be completed within a month the president of the Conference has pro- mised to pn-Reh the re-openÏ1Ig sermons. In connection with the extension, the eminent preacher and philanthropist, the Rev Charles Garrett, of Liverpool, preached morning and evening at the Wesley Chapel, Stow-hill. on Sunday. In the evening the chapel was crowded. The collections for the day winch amounted to :B/3 2s 9d were for the extenstoa fund. The Rev Dr Grimtlis, recently of America, has received an invitation to become the pastor of the recently-formed Unitarian Church at Pontypridd.

DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN {SWANSEA MINISTER. The death is announced of the Rev Ezekiel Thomas, the well-known Calvinistic Methodise Minister. The deceased had been ailing for some time, and within the past few the pam of the disease from which he was suffering—i-anccr— was so acute that death came as < welcome relief. The rv gentleman, who wa 74 years of age, lived at Penlan Villa, Swansea, and had a high reputation a a preacher and wri tpr. Amongst other things he was author of several books and pamphlets, and a large contributor to the verna- cular magazines. Though his end was known to be near, so diligent a w :rker v. as the deceased that as recently as last Sunday week he showed great anxiety to fulfil a preaching engagement, and lie went so far as to enjoin on his attendants the necessity of ordering a. cab to take, him to chape), and it was only with difficulty that his daughter and son-in-law prevailed on him to keep his bed. The departed was father of the present post-master of Windsor, and uncle of Mr A. II. Thomas, J.P., and Mr John Thomas, the sur-' veyor to the Swansea Rural Sanitary Authority. One of his duties was to collect moneys due to the firm, and to send in a statement each evening or the following morning, when be was engaged outside the district, which was but seldom, accounting for the moneys received. He was paid B2 10s a week, in addition to expenses. Two cases only of a number wore gone into, the sums amounting to £16 15s 7d. Prisoner pleaded guilty, and his advocate pressed upon the bench tho fact that he had hitherto borne an excellent character.—Mr Isaac, a mertl- ber of the firm, stated that theprosecution was nob prompt-d by vindict-.veness. THE EVICTED TENANTS' COMMISSION. ISSUE OF THE REPORT. The Report of the Evicted Tenants' Commis- sion was issued onMondayas a. Parliamentary paper, and confirms the accuracy of the report of the conclusions and recommendations already pub- lished. The report further states that it has been proved to the satisfaction of the Commissioners, that there was not, as had been assorted, a general strike by tenants against the payment ot all rent (m estates into which thl-v had inquired, the dispute having originated in each cast- with til" exception of the Tippeiary Estates of Mr Smith Barry m a question whether tlitre should he any abatement, and on that estate difficulties arose In conSfequeJlCC of the interven- tion of Mr Smith Barry in a dispute between Mr Ponsonby and his tenant's, as to the propriety of which the Commissioner-, express 110 opinion. The Commissioners heard iii all the evidence regarding 1,797 evictions, and several com- plaints wprt made by witnesses ot the heedless de. struction of property byemersrency men and others both during and after evictions. Arrests and prosecutions of tenants abo often added to a feeling of mtefise exasperation in various locali- ties, and it was to be regretted that it was in manv cases considered advisable to burn or destroy houses built by tenants or their ptedecea- sors. The report further states that the condition of the evicted tenants j" deplorable, that they hang about their farms without, relinquishing the hope of reinstatement, and that it is not surprising that the authorities have consi. dered the presence of additional police force on many of the estates as advisable. The report,, after dealing with seventeen estates inquired into seriatim, states that the total cost of these evictions and consequent proceedings, was £115,418, and of tins amount £Y5,460 came out of the exchequer and £19,958 from local rates.
