LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LO>~DON, Monday. The Money Market has been moderately active. The Continental demand for gold is becoming stronger, and that is a source of steadiness to prices. There is a fair but not excessive inquiry .for money in connection with the Stock Exchange settlement, and the banks have lent to the House at the rate of 2% to 3 per cent. per annnm for fortnight. Short Loans have been quoted at 1% to 154 per cent. Discounts were quiet, but steady three months' Bank bills were negotiated at 1% per cent. Paris Cheque Exchange 25'16%. The fortnightly settlement which has just commenced is expected to pass off quietly. Continuation rates rule much about the same as on the last occasion, and the dif- ference to be met can hardly be large. American Railways were an unsettled market. The general carrying over rate was 3 to 4 per cent. The market had no support. Are you y Yet, though anecdotes of the sort have circulated for many cecades, it is only quite recently that a simple and effective means of distinguishing the guest from the waiter otherwise titan by the greater distinction of bis bearing bas been in- vented. At last, however, stioli a device has bsen invented and patented. It consists of a handsome gilt casing1, which can in a moment be drawn over the ordinary buttons of the waiter's coat, and so transforms the simple, homely swallow-tail into a gorgeous and resplendent uniform. Th", iuvel1t:on is dtle to the suggestion of a member of Parliament, who lately shook bands with a waiter at a public banquet under the mistaken belief that he was a scion of acounty famiv.

Mr Davies, Pontardawe, the hther of the young woman, a white haired man standing over six feet in height, now appeared and promised to take charge of his daughter, and the Bench assented to this course, and father and child left the court in company.

'40. A REAL FAINT. I cried Police Stop thief and ran ¡ after him, and then fainted," said Miss Edith Deuce, actress, to the magistrate at Maryleoone, in narrating how Sydney Patterson stole her purse 111 Edgware-road. "Dèar me exclaimed Mr Plowden, "was it a real faint or a dramatic one ?" Oh, I do assure you, sir," was the reply, it was a leal one that tune." Natu- rally enough, being on the stage, Miss Deuce knows all about what are known as the Dramatic Unities, and that a, faint, to be really effective, must ti1ke place neither too soon nor too late, but just at the moment when the villain of the piece bUs into the hands of Justice and she aiiJo knows tbe technicalities of her prdesion too well even to attempt to faint without miking a considerable beforehand. Therefore, after she had given plenty of warning she had every right to "gooff," fooling assured that when she awoke for the next act the dastard would bo in the cu-tody of a policeman. And so he was, but, unluckily, the lady's purse, which contained 17s, was thrown a way uy the prisoner and has not been recovered. This is unfortunate for Miss Deuce, who acted an exciting part 111 a real drama in an excellent manner, but she has the satisfac- tion of having assisted in arresting the career, not of a stage but of a veritable villain for at least three months, that being the period allotted to Patterson for the enjoyment of the unobtrusive luxuries of a plank bed and hard labour.

SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE MONDAY, March 13th, 1893. The week has opened quietly, there bemg little or nothing in the way of real activity f,except in Barry Preference Allotments and the Fractions. These continue to be nego- tiated freely, at a gradually advancing premium but in other groups things are ,very quiet, and lacking in feature of interest. A slightly weaker tone is observable in Taff Vale Stock, which has been dealt in to-day at 81 and 81%, while there are further sellers at the lower price named. 4The market for Banks means practically at the present moment National Bank of Wales Shares, though Lloyds have been done to some extent. The glorious un- certainty in regard to what the assets of the pBank of Wales will yield is causing a steady -depression in prices. The quotation has 1 ,.been gradually tumbling down, and a further I .fractional decline has to be noted to-day. ,A most unsettled state of feeling prevails in ,the market for this security, and speculators and investors alike seem to be quite unable ',to determine the position, or what the pros- pect is likely to be in the* course of the next week or two. There are those who maintain that the present low prices are not -Warranted, because they believe that the I report of the directors was correct in all its ,essential particulars. It certainly is difficult -to reconcile the statements contained in the report with the doubt and uneasiness pre- vailing with regard to the Shares at. the present time, for it really amounts to this— 'that a large number of holders are getting rid of their Shares at a considerable sacrifice. glie absence of any official intimat-ion of the amalgamation being about to take place is also regarded as a peculiar feature of the business but this may simply arise from a desire on the part of the joint boards to be (able to make a clear and definite statement •as to how matters stand in relation to I *the financial aspect of the case before coming out with any authoritative declara- tion. The business transacted in the course tion. The recurrence of the colliers' monthly holiday has affected the export trade of the I' port during the past week, but, notwith- standing this fact, shipments amounted to 248,976 tons. The trade of the Bute Docks was as follows :-Coal, coke, and patent fuel shipments, 147,131 tons; imports, 27,667 tons. At Penarth Dock the total quantity of coal and coke shipped amounted to 38,337 tons, while at Barry Dock the exports during the week reached 74,810 tons, a figure which is somewhat below the average. I This morning the annual general meeting of the Floating'Metallic Packing Company was held under the presidency of Mr John Cory (Messrs John Cory and Sons), chairman of the company. All the directors were present, and there was a fair attendance of shareholders. It was explained in the dis- cussion which took place on the motion for the adoption of the report and statement of accounts, that the principal item in the revenue account for salaries and com- mission, in all about E160, had been paid away to the Magnolia Metal Company as their commission on the sale of the patent. It appeared that differences of opinion had arisen and continued during a considerable portion of the year between the Magnolia Metal Company and the Floating Metal- lic Company, but these differences were likely to be got over without much further trouble. There was a fair prospect of the thing turning out very satisfactory as times advanced. The directors gave a very full explanation to the shareholders of the causes of such ditferences of opinion, and as evidence that the shareholders were satisfied with what the directors had done a vote of thanks to the latter was passed at the close of the meeting. The motion for the adoption of the report haviug be-en seconded, it was carried. The retiring directors were then re elected, as was also Mr W. A. Morgan, the auditor. It was mentioned during the meeting that some of the packing had boon in constant use in steamers for between two and three years and had never given the slightest trouble. NATTONAL BANK OF WALES. HOLLOWAY'S PlU.S a.re securtties of health to fill nations, of whatever clime. They have given hope, relief, and comfort to millions. In irritation and debility, generated by excesses of any kind, or in geiiera, I prostration of the iysiem, their effect is rapidly soothing, renovating, and restorative. They rapidly drive from the system the morbid cause of ailment, and renew in the frame its pristine animation, lieitth, and vigour. They greatly increase the appetite,, give tone to the stomach, assist the dige-tion, and impart elasticity to the spirits their essence enters the circu- lation and, carried through its course, exerts its cleansing power over every organ. In the lungs they affect most striking changes, converting the impure venous into pure arterial blood, by which the whole rame is recriutfld.
