SOUTH WALES FINANCE. (Cardiff Account Days, Dec. 15th and 30th.) MONDAY, December 6th, 1897. Business continues to be of a very quiet humdrum character in the local market, but the general tone has been just a shade better to-day. There has been a fairly general inquiry for Rliymuey Ordinary, but sellers appeared to be scarce. The quota- tion closed 1 better, a 275%, but no busi- ness is reported. Tarf Ordinary has been dealt in at 83%, the top price, and the quotation moved up Y4 to that level. Rhondda and Swansea Bay Ordinaries have also been dealt in at 6^, the old orice. Barry Stocks are quiet but steady. With the improved prospects of the coal trade Colliery Shares are in rather better demand. The Newport-Abercarn Col- liery is understood to be doing better under the new directorate, and as a consequence the steady rise in the shares continues. The Ordinary has been dealt in to-day at 4^?. The quota- tion for these closes better at 472, and Y4 for the Preferences at 7%. LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Monday. Money was again in strong demand, and, the supply being short, borrowers had to p 1 11 pay 272 to 3 per cent. for advances over the night, whilst a fairly large business was done by the central institution at the official rate. The Discount Market re- mained firm, and brokers would not dis- count best three months' bills below 2* per cent. On the Stock Exchange business was, if anything, a trifle more active, and the tone was firm in most departments. Consols advanced on investment pur- chases, and Home Railway Stocks mark a general improvement on the note of the Board of Trade to the rail- way employees, it being now consi- dered practically certain that no strike will take place. American descriptions were very little dealt in, operators awaiting President McKinley's Message to Con- gress to-day, but the tone was good at the finish in response to New York opening advices. Canadian lines showed only fractional changes at the finish. A feature was a considerable ad- vance in Mexican Rails, believed to be due to the expectation that this company will probably be allowed to raise its rates owing to the heavy fall which has recently taken place in silver, whilst the advance in this I metal to-day also assisted the upward movement in prices. Foreign Bonds were generally firmer. Ottoman Bank Shares, however, were much depressed on un- favourable dividend rumours. South Africans, after being firmer, closed dull, in response to weaker prices from Paris. West Australian and New Zealand issues, I however, were weak, but Copper Shares remained firm. The market for Home Government Securities was strong, and Consols ad- vanced 1" for money, to 112ii-, and 16' for the account, to 113^ Rupee Paper rose Colonial Inscribed Stocks were firm. Tasmanian 334 per Cent. rose 1. Foreign Bonds were firm, and Spanish Fours rose Turkish Second Group, Third and Fourth do., -it; French Threes, Italian Rentes, ft; Argentine 1886, I do. Funding, and Chilian 1885 and 1886 and Uruguay 1835, 1, the latter to 48yz. Uruguay Old Loan, however, fell Bulgarian 1888, 1 and Peru Deben- tures, Y4 the latter to 40. Home Railways were strong and higher, Midland Deferred and Great Eastern marking an advance of 1; Great Westerns, North-Easterns, South-Western Deferred Metropolitans, Districts, and South-Eastern Deferred, XA Brighton Deferred, 54 Midland Preferred Ordinary, Great Northern Deferred, North-Westerns, and Chatham Ordinary, 34 Caledonian De- ferred, Furness, 1; and Rhymney, 2. City and South London Ordinary, however, fell 3, and Hull and Barnsley, Y4. American Railways were ncglected, but ¡ closed with a good tone. Milwaukees advanced Y2 on the day. We understand that the prospectus of the Welsbach Incandescent Gaslight Com- pany will be issued at the end of this week. The capital will be £ 1,500,000 in 5 per Cent. Preference Shares, £1,350,000 7 per Cent. Ordinary Shares, and £ 650,000 Deferred Shares. None of the Deferred Shares will be offered for sub- scription. The auditor's certificate of the net profits for the last financial year shows £ 209,800. Sir Henry C. Burdett, K.C.B., the ex-secretary of the Share and Loan Department of the London Stock Ex- change, will be the chairman. The prospectus of Messrs George Whybrow, Limited, drysalters, oil mer- chants, and proprietors of Whybrow's pickles, &c., is published in another column. The company has been formed for the pur- pose of acquiring, carrying on, and extend- ing the well known business of Mr George Whybrow, proprietor of the celebrated Whybrow's pickles, dry- salter, sauce manufacturer, &c., this business, one of the oldest in the trade, having been established in the beginning of the present century. The canital is £ 60,000, in 12,000 shares of £ 5 each, and these are now offered at par. CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, MONDAY. The more buoyant tone which pervaded the steam coal market at the close of the week has been well maintained to-day. There are &, goodly number of steamers to hand, and shipments are brisk. It will be quite the middle of the week, however, before any sensible relief is felt at the chief dock and railway sidings, or improvement notablo at many of the collieries. Thenceforth prices may be expected to move up in response to the big dcma-id which undoubtedly exists. As it is, quotations are firmer all round except &a regards smalls. I A Colombo telegra,m states that the Cheshire reports having fallen in with the Dutch steamer Babalan on November 30, in lat. 11 N., long. 60 E., with engines broken down. The Austrian stea.mer Bathori, for the Clyde, with a general cargo, is ashore at Broausea Bay, five miles north of Port Patrick, in a dangerous position. The steamer Bingfielwhich grounded on Maplin Sands, was towed off on Sunday night by three tugs, and passed Gravesend on Monday for Millwal!. The vessel WIlf; not making water, out a bulkhead was started, and she was unable to work the engines. A Harwich telegram states that the Norwegian steamer Banes, from Hull for Valencia, grounded on Longsand on Sunday, but afterwards floated and proceeded. The German steamer Eberstein has been assisted afloat by a Svitzer steamer, and taken to Helsingborg. Divers will be employed to examine the vessel's bottom. The German barque Kathkinka, from Middles- brough for Table Bay, with a cargo of phosphate, has arrived at Spithead with loss of sails, etc., and cargo damaged. The British ship Port Patrick, before reported sunk at New York, bllofl been floated. The Swedish barque Nordstjerneu, from Suuds- wall for Palma, with wood, has been towed into Bremerhaven abandoned, waterlogged. She was beached in the harbour. The Norwegian schooner Johann Margrethe, from Dysart for Btavanger, with coals, was abandoned in a sinking condition. The crew landed at Grimsby. The ketch Piona, from Littleferry for Shields, with potatoes, has arrived at Fraserburgh leaking, and grounded at the entrance to the harbour, where she must discharge for repairs. The schooner Thomas, bound down the Clyde, in tow, was considerably damaged by collision with an inward bound steamer and beached at Greenock to prevent sinking. The All-an Line steamer Corean, from New York, has arrived at Haliiax with port bow above the main deck and cattle fittings damaged. The cattle were uninjured. The damage was occasioned through collision with a, large unknown light steamer, appa,rently for Boston. The British steamer Glenochil, before reported ashore at Delaware Breakwater, has been towed off. The Norwegian barque Zampa is outside Lisbon Bar partially dismasted.
