IHOLYWELL.
HOLYWELL. At the Nantglyn Chair eisteddfod held on Thursday last week, the prize for the chief essay on "Our prospects as a nation, sooially and religious," was awarded to Mr Robert Parry (Ftynnonfab), Holywell. The Bey John Smith, Nantglyn, was adjudicator. EXPXBK DAT IJIII HOLTWBM.—The hoiating of the Union Jack on the Town Buildings and hotel fiagstafis, and floating it from buaineas pramiees, and also from the flagstaff at Lluesty (tee institu- tion of the Holywell Union), was the form of celebration of the Empire Day in Holywell, on Monday last. A Cow IN IBI WATBBWOBKS.—The other day a oow grazing on the side of the old Helywell Waterworks foil into the empty reservoir. Stones and blocks of cement were all that lay at the bottom, not a blade of grass waa there for food, and of drink it had not a single drop. The waterworks was a waterless prison, for vain were the efiaets of the animal to soale the steep sidea of the reservoir. The predica- ment in which the oow was placed became known and with soma dlffionlty it was ultimately hoisted out of the "great pit with ropes. The only injury it sustained was a braising over the hip boats. A PATBXABCHIX; OATHOIRE PAIRAT.-Tho Rev. Father Milntr, one of the priests attached to the Roman Catholia Mission at Holywell, has just celebrated his ninetieth birthday. He is a native of Liverpool and was ordained to the priesthood in 1840. His early years in the priesthood were spent at Skipton, Yorkshire. He came to Holywell from St. Helena twenty-thise years ago, since which time be has been a familiar figure to the thoasands who visit the shrine of St. Winefride in the summer months. He is believed to be the oldest Roman Oatholio priest in Wales, and retains all bit faculties, aad is able to take part in the regular work of the alasoa at Holywell. utva apooi MILIXAB* SOCUBST AND aa CABKWXS Tzamazur, Bmc&wmmn.-Ou Saturday last, about 60 members of too Liverpool Military Society, visited Holywell for the purpose of oarrying out a week-end out-door exercise, in view of the coming encampment at Caerwys. The party made the Mug's Head Hotel, their rendezvous for Saturday evening, and were entertained by Oapt. Salter, and left ELutywoU on Sunday morning, in motor oars, fot the neighbourhood of Caerwys. The ground worked over included the area whereon the greater pare ot trie West Lancashire Division is to camp in August next. Colonel tt. E. Stanton, A.D.C., D.b.O., B.A. General Staff West Lancashire Division Territorial Foioe, kindly set a scheme and assisted iu the ureetion of the taotioal operations on whiob its application was baaed. In the absence of aotnal troops the value of the ins-motions lay in the study 01 the ground and its uses in the disposition of troops had they been available. The motor and bioyds aided the mobile phases of the operations. 45,000 MILES WITHOUT ACCIDENT. It seems an almost impossible performance to drive over 46,009 miles without some kind of mishap either to horse 01 vehicle. Yet this is the teat performed by David Jenkios, driver of his Majesty's aspraiis meil-vau running daily between FAipt, Mold, and Rutbio, and formerly oatlei at sho King's Head Hotel, Holywell. For many years Jenkins has been pilotiug the mails over some of the roughest ground in North Walei, and, owing to his care and patience, he has not even been delayed on his journey by having to refit a oast horseih ie. Of course, he has had adventures; snoh a life as he leads would be impossible without them. For instance, on a January morning some three years ago, he left Flint at 3.20 a.m. duricg a heavy stjfm which kept him company the whole journey, the terrifying thunder and lightning never onoe ceasing. Again, during the blizzard of last winter, Jenkins succeeded in landing his mails euooenefully, though on some parts of his journey he had to work his way through snowdrifts over 6ft. deep. On this occasion he was an hoar and a half behind ebed ultld tím- the only occasion he has ever been known to be what may be called late." In faut, the country people are known to keep their clook timed by the pa,3 ing of his Majesty's express mail. Once and ooce only, he had a companion on his drive. This passenger took the form of a hey, which evidently had gone to roost on the spring of his van overnight. Batore she was discovered she had done a journey of over ten miles. SOCIALIST CANON'S FORTUNE. WEALTH TO BE GIVEN TO THE POOR. A week ago Canon Ricin, who is a familiar and popular clerical figure in the county of Lincoio, and who recently held a mission in Holyweil, made a sensational statement at a Labour mass meeting "As a Socialiet," he smid, atid a foll-wer of One who had no where to lay His head, 1 have to consider how fat I am justified in living on unearned intrdment from the wealth I happed to hava in- berited. It is a hard problem, bntl in tend to face it." The oanon has been much pressed since then to amplify his statement, but be xofasts all interviews. "I ean only tell yon" he says to the itquirer, "that I am facing the problem as well as I can. I am not going to part with my oapital." It is understood however, that he inteacs to surrender the whole of the income from his private wealth, which is considerable. He bas alrdirfy Ulade arrangements to sell hie motor oar and part with biB carriage, and he will live entirely un his salary. His private means he will devote to the aileviation or suffering and want as it is brought to his notice. HOLYWELL AND DISTRICT LICENSED VICTUALLERS' ASSOCIATION. On Thursday afternoon last, at the King's Head Hotel, a meeting of the licensed victuallers withiu the Holywell distriob was held for the purpose ot considering the question of forming a Lioelled Victuallers' Association for the distriot.
