Ix another column appear some figures of tho trade in eggs, poultry, butter, and vegetables, and cheese. They are a. deplorable sequel to those on bacon, published last week. Here we arc, importing every year, to the value of 2W,000,000, articles possible to 1>0 produced by ourselves, and which we ought to produce. We have everything in our favour— soil, climate, ready rnarket-, the best breeds of cattle, pigs, and poultry, every thing but ourz- system. And for tho want of that we have lost our chances. No, not LOST, wo have literally thrown them away; and, in doing so, we have not got even the cold comfort, offered by Free Traders that wo are getting tho goods cheap. Prices go up, but it is the foreigner who reaps tho benefit; it is we who pay. I THK bitter part of the thing is that it need never liave happened. There was no natural or economic law to prevent our competing with the foreigner in the articles named above, such as forbade us to hope to compete in wheat growing with the virgin corn lands of tho New World. Wo failed simply because we did not knofl- how to succeed, and did not try to learn. Wo bred the best animals, o made the best butter, our bacon was the: standard of excellence. Other nations, Danes and Germans. came and took away our stock and our methods of manufacture, because they could find nono better. Then they went home and constructed other methods of their own, and the result is written in the chronicles of the Boards of Trade and Agricul- ture. In the face of the dark record we have sat with folded hands, as though defeat were inevitable, as though recovery were impossible. i NOTHING is impossible which is within our control. And the causes of our failuro are within our con- trol. An eminent German authority, writing on British agriculture, asks: "Why has not the British farmer been able to keep in his own hands the entire supply of those enhanced quantities of butter, eggs, poultry, fruit and vegetables which his mar- kets require?" Ho finds the answer in two causes- in the drawback that the farmers aro mainly tenants instead of owners, "and because alike in tho production of his supplies and in his method of disjjosing of them, the British farmer has a less perfect system than that of his competitors." But these are causes which can be removed. Develop small ownership, to stimulate the energies of the farmer; organise agriculture, to obtain the fullest results of those energies. It is not impossible to do these things. Remove the causes of failure, and success will take its place. AXD all the more readily because the forms of agriculture which would bo stimulated happen to be those least arduous and most attractive. The town dweller who would return to a country life would find in pig and poultry rearing work. easy to learn. The supply of cream to a butter-making' factory would 00 easy also, and profitable. And suppose wo did it her, We should not only keep money in the country which now unnecessarily goes abroad, we should keep men in the fields who now encumber tho towns. W o should no longr havo only 36 men employed to every 1,000 cultivated acres, but something like the 73 employed in Denmark. Wealth, employment—these would come, suppose we did it here.

INSTITUTE.—The proceedings at last Sun- day s meeting of tho Sunday Institute commenced wuh a recitation by Miss Florrie Hodges, who fully maintained her usual high standard of excellence, and deeply stirred the emotions of her audience with her rendering of "Tho Haven." An excellent and edifying- address was given by Mr. Stott, of Liver- pool, who related the incidents of the young boat- man who, in spite of' repeated warnings from thoso on the t-hore, carelessly allowed his boat to drift on until alien too late to save himself-it was caught in the clownward sweep of Niagara, and carried over the falls to destruction, and warned his hearers of the danger of drifting, and advised them as a means of steering clear of the temptations surrounding an aimless life to always have some worthy object in view; to set up for themselves high ideals and to begin at once to <io somethmg, for only in that way could they hopo to bo successful oither in the business or the spiritual life. Kcxt Sunday there will not. be a meeting of the Institute, owinrr to other special arrangements.
