DEATH OF MR. DAVID JONES,…
DEATH OF MR. DAVID JONES, MANAGER LLOYDS BANK, LAMPfcTfcR TRAGIC END TO A BRIGHT CAREER. It is our prainrul duty this week to chronicle the sudden death of Mr. David Jones, manager of Lloyds Bank, Lampeter, which occurred on l'eter- well Golf LillKS on Wednesday alternoon last week. Mr. Jones, who was an enthusiastic goiier, walked up to the links on Wednesday afternoon, where he played in company with several ouier gentlemen for an hour or two, when he was seen to drop sud- denly on his knees, and then on his face. faergt.- Major Baldwin rushed to his assistance at once, and did his utmost, but it was evident that he had died instantly. When news of the sad event reached the town, it cast a gloom over everybody, as Mr. Jones was so well known, apparently enjoying the best of health, of gentlemanly bearing, and a splendid specimen ot manhood, tall and well-developed, and one who took great interest in public matters, and especially in connection witn the Church, where ho was an example ot faithfulness and punctuality. He entered the Uld Bank hero about Db years ago, and through his indefatigable energy and perseverance was promoted 29 years ago. On the transfer of the bank to Lloyds Goinpany, Mr. Jones' services were secured by the new company, and everytning pros- pered under his supervision. Hut alas! the words of the Prayer Book, "In the midst of life wo are in death," were verified at 4.15 on Wednesday, March 23, and the news camo as a shock to all. Mr. Jones had faithfully carried out his duties as sidesman, -iorl churchwarden, chorister, Sunday School teacher, etc., in connection with St. Peter's Church, and his de- parture from our midst will long be felt. In addi- tion to his duties as bank manager, Mr. Jones was treasurer to the following:—Lampeter Union, Lam- peter Rural District Council, Lampeter Agricultural Society, Foresters' Court, Lampeter Town Council, Lampeter Football Cluú, clerk to the Income Tax Commissioners, and several other appointments. As a business man, he was keen and far-seeing, devoted to duty, and always at his post. He was one of the proprietors of the printing and stationery business at C ax ton Hall, under the stylo of T. L. Davies and Co., and when the business was bought in 1898 by the Welsh Church Press Company, he was appointed one of the directors, an office which he retained un- til his death. The deepest sympathy is felt for his bereaved widow and six children, who lost a loving husband and father through his death at the early age of 54. May God in his infinite mercy succour and help them in their sorrow and anguish, and enable them to look beyond the grave to that happy land where there is no sorrow or weeping. THE INQUEST. On Thursday afternoCSn, Dr. Abel Evans, coroner, held an inquest at Lloyds Bank touching the death of Mr. David Jones. The Rev. Mr. Baldwin deposed that he was playing goM with the deceased on Wed- neadiiy afternoon, when he appeared in good neaitn. On the last "too," after making the last stroke, which was the best deceased had made during tho day, deceased made the remark that he had had too much dinner to play golf. Witness and deceased proceeded in the direction of witness s ball, which was nearest to the tee. On arriving there, deceased fell on his kness, and then on his face. Witness turned him over on his back. and he was observed to gasp twice. Everything that could be done in rendering first aid was done.-Mr. D. Nun Lavies, draper, Llanelly, said ho was called by the last wit- ness-to render assistance. He was then 30 or 40 yards awav. He observed deceased gasping twice. A medical' man was sent for, but life was extinct before ho arrived. The jury returned a verdict of "Death from natural causes," and expressed their sorrow with the widow and family in their sad bereavement, and gave their fees towards procuring a wreath. THE FUNERAL. CARMARTHEN SPORTS AND BRASS…
CARMARTHEN SPORTS AND BRASS BAND CONTESTS SUCCESSFUL ExVSTER-MONDAY EVENT. The usual Sports, etc., promoted by the Carmar- then imports and Attractions Committee, unuer 1 no auspices of the Corporation, came off on faster- iuouday, and were very suocessfui. Ram fell during v the morning, but the remainder of the day was line though cloudy, and nothing happened to mar tne day's enjoyment. The attendance was very good, but tne Lianstephan motor omnibus service con- veyed to that place many of the visitors who would otnerw.se have patronised the popular West Wales atlliotio fixture. On the whole, however, the gate compared very favourably with the corresponding numbers last year. This annual event continues to attract Borne of the best known crack riders in the country, riders representing the standard clubs being present. Among those visitors, who are well-known to followers of form, were Vio Johnson, Dennis Hodgette, Albert Denny, G. A- W. King, and Frank Bell, of the Rover R.C.C. W. J. Bailey, of the Polytechnic C.C., had also entered, but an accident, sustained at the Herno Hill meeting on Good Friday, had incapacitated him from attending. The con- tests in the various events were exciting, and well up to the high standard of the Carmarthen sports. The foot races attracted bumping entries, over fifty rimnere having entered in nine of the classes. A race which evoked considerable interest was the 1,000 yards open handicap, in which A. Henderson, of Edinburgh, was matched against about 30 well- known sprinters from various parts of South Wales. To an otherwise excellent programme was added the considerable interest of a brass band contest in three classes, for which the principal bands in West Wales had entered. The arrangements were in the hands of the follow- ing executive and finance committoo :-Chairman of committee, Alderman Walter Lloyd (mayor of Car- marthen; committee, Messrs. John Crossman, ex- mayor (vice-chairman), H. S. Holmes, W. Bartlott, F. G. Humphreys, D. J .Davies, H. E. Blagdon- Richards, Henry Lewis, John Morgan, B. A. Lewis, E. V. Collier, R. W .Ward, E. J. Andrews, and F. J. Finglah; solicitor, Mr. J. P. Morris, Bryn Roma; treasurer, Mr. C. Haydn Williams, 7, King-street; auditor, Mr. James John, town clerk. It is almost unnnecessary to mention that Mr." J. C. H. PorVnell was the secretary, as the success of the Carmarthen spo?-t.s for so many years has been, in a great measure, civic io his indefatigable efforts. The officials were:—Handicapper (cycling), Mr. R. J. Brind, KCX.. Cardiff: judges (foot), Messrs. H. E. iy^ck»n-Jl;>i!apda, TL Brunei White, E. V. LLANGADOCK RACES
LLANGADOCK RACES The annual races at Llangadock on Easter-Monday this year, as usual, attracted a record crowd, 'mere were in the held and the streets all sorts and con- ditions of men from the ubiquitous collier to we representatives of old and respected county families. Tho "bookie" was also well in evidence, a detail wh.ch seems to snow that the LlangaclocK. races are events of a great aeal of importance. The aavent of the motor-car has 6ignalised an extended area for the feeding ground, or should we say tne held of patronage, wtucn is another mode of iocomotidh that our colliery friend has availed himself of, and one whioh, by and bye—indeed it has already—helped to convert him into a more respectable citizen. The morning did not open promising. There were showers, and these always help to keep away the delicate section of the crowd. The afternoon, how- ever, was all that one could wish for, and it helped to draw the lovers of the performances of horse flesh from far and near. So that this year again the genial, good-humoured, and energetic secretary, and his able committee, have every reason to con- gratulate themselves on the result. Among the horses which ran were several old favourites, and a good many fresh ones. The entry list was big, and in most of the races the interest and excitement was great. Amongst county families present we noticed Mr. and Mrs. Pryse-Ricc (mayor and mayoress of Llandovery) and party, Llwynybrain; Col. Lloyd-Harries and party, Llwyndewi; Mrs. Bishop and party, Dolgarreg; Miss Bishop and party, Cwmrythan; Mr. E. P. Lloyd, Glansevin; Mr. Mervyn Peel and party, Danyrallt; Capt. TIVYSIDE HUNT PUPPY SHOW
TIVYSIDE HUNT PUPPY SHOW •INCREASE OF NUMBER WALKED. Tiit- above annual event, which is always looked forward to «ith considerable interest, and the first under the mastership of Ca'£ft:. Spence-Jones, Manor- eifed, took place in a field adjoining that, mansion on Wednesday in last week and attracted a large attendance. The entries numbered 24 <'Ouples-lO of dogs and 14 of bitches; and, compared with last year, an increase. There, however, appeai-s to bo a scarcity of fox^s in the Tivy-Side Hunt district, due to an outbreak of mange, and also a number tie- stroyed through rabbit trapping. If there are no foxes there can be no hunting, and it is certainly to the interests of tho farmers to support the master as much as possible in protecting them, as it means the keeping of 50 or 60 horses for hunting pur- poses, by which farmers must benefit by supplying forage, etc. Thcro xtere no special champion cups offered this year, but this was bettered by tho.two first winners in tho two classes being awarded cups in addition to their money prizes. Tho judges wore Mr. E. M.F.H., Easl on Court. Chepstow, I and Mr. Pryse-Rice. Llwynybrain. ITEN SHILLINGS REWARD
TEN SHILLINGS REWARD A few weeks ago a report of a wedding at Esger- dawe, near Llansawel, was received in this office containing statements which we find were entirely false, and signed with a fictitious name and address. We have every reason to believe that those state- ments we're made with the deliberate intention to cause pain and annoyance to certain people, and we appeal to our readers to assist ua in discovering the name of the writer. We give herewith a reduced facsimile of the handwriting and the signature ap- pended to the report, in the hope that someone will recognise it. We also offer a reward of ten shillings to the first person who will give such in- formation to the Editor as will lead to the discovery of the author of this mean attempt to hoax the JOURNAL and to injure unoffending people.
