_=- UNSUCCESSFUL INTERCES- SION. COUNCILLOR W. SAUNDERS, with a zeal worthy of the cause, has tried in vain to represent the case of the navvies on strike before their em- plovers. Tl e imp r ance of the interview with Mr Will s on W>-dii"sday is not confined to a, Y probability there might be considered of effect ing a settlement, but is chiefly c nnposed in the attitude in which the employers view the men's demands. The strike has advanced far into its sixth week, and there has during that time been a gr»-at deal of ai.xiety on the part of Trades Unioni-ts as to the issue; much poverty and g has Inen toler-fted and the Cadoxton portion of the town has suffered very greatly. Pecuniary assistance has been extended with a lavish band, and practical sympathy with the men has been displayed by almost every secl ion of the community. These are, after all, mere adjuncts to the great questions at stake, and in the interview with Councillor Saunders the breach was apparently widened, for, judging by his demeanour, it would appear that that gentleman wished to convince others that he was himself convinced that the contractors were not so inhuman as many had represented them to be, and were really better than their friends had even painted them. Councillor Saunders is to be congratulated upon his spirit of con- ciliation, but in the face of what was pointed out to him by Mr Wills as to what men earned on "butty lOess" gangs be was evidently led astray. This is piece-work, and as such bad absolutely nothing to do with the question at issue. A statement made that many of the older men were not worth 5d an hour is a more correct reflex of the minds of the masters and that they would be obliged to depose a large number if they were compelled to pay that amount is indicative only of the intensity ,)f this feeling. This is the case of the masters, then, that men a little advanced in years are not worth the miserable pittance of old an uour -all amount which could be earned by them stone-breaking on the roadside or in the casual ward of a workhouse, even without the exacting task masters that we see forcing them to put into a day's work as much vitality as human food can sustain! Such human mechanism and excessive toil, which is the prototype of slavery, is not worth 5d an hour, they say We have wept over the 2 wrongs of Poland, but never in the dark pages of the history of that wretched country are such conditions tolerated, when a man drives away as a toiling slave for 5d an hour, and in wet weather has to remain idle, and owing to the small wage has to live under conditions that would put Eastenders to shame. This is a state that all Barry should revolt against, and yet it is the lot of the navvy.
A CLEVEDON MYSTERY.
A CLEVEDON MYSTERY. BODY FOUND ON BARRY ISLAND. Shortly after seven o'clock on Sunday morning last Sergeant John Watkius, of the Severn Brigarle Submarine Miners, discovered the body of a lady, fully attired, on the rocks on Neli's Point, Whit- more Bay, Barry Island, m-ar the encampment ground. The body was removed to the llwrtu try at Barry Dock, and the police at that place, by means of the description circlllatri of a lady missing from Clevedon, were able to identify the person found as Mrs Maria Cope, ag'd 30, of the Wagon and Horses Hotel, Clevedon. The deceased lady had been missing exactly a fortnight to the day when found, and after communicating with the police the friends of Mrs C )pe arrive at Barry Dock later in the afcernom and confirmed the identification. It was feared that some ill had befallen the deceased, but the question as to how she got into the water is enwrapped in mystery. The body was in an advance I state of decomposi- tion, and it was consequently difficult to s ly, until a medical examination had beea made, whether there were any marks of violence.—Oa Monday, at the Police Station, Barry Dock, Mr E. B. Reece (coroner) conducted an inquiry into the circum- stances attending the death of Mrs Cope, and an open verdict was eventually returned.

The Barry Tent of Rechabites, No. 1,981, has decided to walk in the procession next Saturday evening to welcome Mr Tennyson Smith, the tamed temperance orator, who is to conduct a mission in the district from the 14th to the 26th instant. All members of the above tent are requested to be at the tent-room at 5.30 sharp, and proceed there- from to the station. A U}{.OCEI'I.'S FAILURE.On Monday last, at the Cardiff Bankruptcy Court (before Mr Registrar Langley), Mr George Daniels, grocer, was examined. In reply to Mr Stephens (the official receiver), the bankrupt said he began business about eight years ago, first at Holton-road Barry Dock, and continued at Cardiff. He lost money in Barry. When he came to Cardiff he borrowed JE52 from his father, and got credit from Liverpool and other firms. After opening a shop in Custom House-street, he opened branches at Sophia-street, Cardiff Holton- road, Bairy Cornwall-road, Cardiff; and also at Clifton-street, Cardiff. He had disposed of all the shefps except the head one in Custom House-street. Although lie harl been brought up in the grocery business he did not keep a cash-book he did not know how to keep one. The whole of the furniture in his house was claimed by his wife. He had not given her any money to buy it. The examination was closed. BARRY. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. WESLEYAN METHODIST BAND OF HOPE. -On Saturday last the officers, members, and friends connected with the above held their annual picnic at W rinstone Farm. Wenvoe, a picturesque spot in close proximity to Courtyrala Park. The greater part travelled by brakes, but several lady friends gracefully performed the journey on t ieir bicycles, and formed, for the time being, a merry troup of pleasure-seekers. Various pastimes were engaged in during the afternoon, and an excellent tea was provided. AH appetites, quickened as they were by the beautiful country air, were at length thoroughly appeased, when the president (Mr Maywhort) announced that an interesting ceremony was about to take place, viz. the gift, by the Band of Hope, to Mr and Mrs Lucas (lately re- turned from their honeymoon), of a handsome silver teapot, together with a silver-mounted bowl and ladle. He then proceeded, in very suitable terms, to make the presentation, and both the happy recipients replied with appropriate speeches, amid the hearty good wishes and applause of all present The weather was beautifully fine, and a delightful drive home brought the most enjoyable day to a c ose. I BARRY NAVVIES" STRIKE. --
BARRY NAVVIES" STRIKE. MATTERS AT A DEADLOCK. OFFER OF MEDIATION. A BITTER STRUGGLE ANTICIPATED. There were no additional applications for work by labourers or navvies at the Barry New Dock on Monday morning last, although there was a strong posse of police in rea iiness to afford protection to any men that might have been disposed to do so. Both contractors have visited the district this week, an 1 a desire seems to pervade, the di-trict that something sh",d, i shortly be done to bring matters into a satisfactory position for both sides. The strike, which has now entered upon its sixth wee. is quickly de-populating Cadoxton, it being esti- mated that fully 1,000 of the navvies have left the place during the last month, which has considerably relieved the Strike Fund. A statement was, however, published in one of the Labour papers that the dispute had been settled, and this resulted in a large number of men coming to the district, who were put to a great deal of unnecessary trouble and suffering.
----COUNCILLOR SAUNDERS OFFERS…
COUNCILLOR SAUNDERS OFFERS TO MEDIATE. Councillor W. Saunders sends us the following copy of a communication which he has for- warded to Messrs Price and Wills, offering his services as mediator in the lamentable dispute between the navvies and Messrs Price and Wills:- East Anglia, Cadoxton, Aug. 8th, 1897. Messrs Price and Wills. "Re New Dock Strike. "Gentlemen,—Believing good would result by the intervention of all uninterested person in the present lamentable dispute on your works, I offered my services this evening at a mass meeting of the men recently in your employ. The men, all but two, decided to accept my offer to mediate on their behalf. Hence my authority to respect- fully ask you for an interview at your earliest convenience, so that, if possible, we may end this sad and disgraceful business. As I am a member of the Barry District Council, representing the working men's interest where possible, you will readily understand my interces- sion on their behalf. The savings of my lifetime are invested in this town; thus I claim the ability, to a gr. at extent, to look at this dispute from a business point of view on your behalf. Would prefer the consent of yourselves to shew the men any or all correspondence that may pass between us, but pledge myself, as a man, to secrecy were you to insist upon it. Trusting you will honour me with an interview, I beg to remain, gentlemen, yours very respectfully, WILLIAM SAUNDERS." In reply to the above, Mr Saunders has received the following Barry Railway Company, No. 2 Dock, Coil "Contractor's Office, "Barry Dock, Glani., "9th August, 1897. Price and Wills, Contractor Dear Sir,—I have to acknowledge receipt of your favour of the Stli iiist., which I ^avo for- warded to the chief office of the firm in Westmin- ster.—Yours respectfully, "ROBERT HOLLOWDAY. Mr W. Saunders, East Anglia, Cadoxton." On Wednesday Mr Saunders received the following communication, dated from West- minster: 15, Groat George-street, Westminster, S.W., "August 10t'n, 1897. Dear Sir,— Barry Dock Strike. I beg to thank you for your letter of the 8th inst., which was forwarded here hy our Barry Office people. My partner—Mr Wills—is now in the Barry district, and is staying at the Barry Hotel and a-; you think good may i, stilt from an interview it him I have no doubt he will have pleasure in seeing you to-morrow, by appointment, at our "i Office. As his time for remaining there will be short, on receipt of this kindly give him the ear heot possible notice of your desire, and state the time you will call.—Yours truly, "JOHN PRICE. Mr William Saunders, East Allgli1\, C,.dox tOll." Mr Saunders then wrote to Mr Wills, who replied to the following effect "Contractor's Office, Barry Dock, August 11th, 1897. To Mr W. Saunders, Dear Sir.—In r^ply to yours just received, Mr Price has sent me copy of your letter of the 8th. Eleven o'clock, at this office, will be convenient for me to see you,—Yours truly, "C. I. WILLS."
--RESULT OF THE INTERVIEW.
RESULT OF THE INTERVIEW. At a mass meeting of navvies held 011 Wednes- day evening at the Cadoxton Moors Councillor Saunders gave the result of the interview which he had had that morning with Mr Wills. He said the contractors were unwilling to make any concession, and the strike, which has now lasted nearly six weeks, continues. He was very courteously received, Mr Wills treating him very frankly and with every respect. The latter complained that the strike was of the men's own making and that they had no inten- tion of conceding anything. Several matters wen' discussed, it being stated that they were as contractors entirely free-handed as to dealing with the work, the Barry Company having no right to intervene, seeing that they were protected by a strike clause. The plant, to the value of X82,000, is lying idle, and they intend to continue the fight to the bitter end. Mr Saunders said he had also been requested by Mr Wills to examine a number of time-sheets, from which he could secure any information regarding the wages of the men. He took one up, which happened to be dated April 9th last. and he copied the rate of wages per hour of excavatiors for butty mess" gang—a kind of piece-work—which showed that the average rate per hour was 6|d, ojd, 7d, and o§d. He then searched down the list to try and find something more favourable to contend against the contractors, but in many cases the average was higher. Mr W^ills also told him that he could clearly see that John Ward was trying to get in the thin end of the wedge; and if he succeeded, there would be no knowing when he would stop driving the wedge. (Hear, hear.) Mr Saunders, therefore, appealed to the men to consider their position in face of these facts, for he had done his best on their behalf, but the best bad been very bad. Mr John Ward then addressed the men, and said the dispute was not with regard to piece- work, for out of 1,200 labourers employed on the works when the strike started less than 50 were engaged at piece work or in the butty mess gangs. He knew, however, for a posi- tive fact that Messrs Price and Wills had expressed in private entirsly opposite views to those which they gave utterance before Coun- cillor Sauuders. It was now clear that it was to be a war of waiting, and any more inter- mediaries or deputations to Messrs Price and Wills were bound to prove fruitless. (Cheers.) He was of opinion that they had the firm under their thumbs, and meant to crack them unless they gave in. A vote was taken, and the men determined, by a unanimous vice, to continue the struggle on their part until the concessions asked for were granted.

BARRY'S VICTORIOUS VOLUNTEERS
BARRY'S VICTORIOUS VOLUNTEERS ENTHUSIASTIC "WELCOME HOME." The victorious detachment of the ihid (llamor- gau Artiliery Voiunteeis from Barry, who achieved such notable successes a" Shoeburyness by winning the second prize of ii40 in the ranging contest and the Prince of Wales Cup, together with an addi- tional X40, was received by ttie people of the dis- tl ict with a demonstration of rejoicing promoted in their honour. On the arrival of the nn n by the 6.34 p.m. at Cadoxton Railway Station on Satur- day last they were met by fellow.memb.-rs of tiie bittiry, in charge of Sergeant-Alajor Watson, R.A., and being conducted to a brake which was prepared in readiness, the Unionist and Buffalo Brass Bands pityed "See the conquering hero." A procession was formed, and as the victorious squad appeared in the various streets of Cadoxton, Barry Dock, and Barry, tney were everywhere hailed with shouts of hurrahs. Fhcy then marched to Culley's Hotel, where Colonel Fry !il(i Captain J. J. Handcoek (the officer in command of the Barry company) addressed ilie m n.—Captain Handcock said lie was proud thai the chosen twenty of his company had so highly distinguished themselves at Shoebnryness, carrying off, not only the Pnnce of Wales Cup, but aiso witmii-g £100 ill money prizes. He hoped that the splendid example thus set would be followed by the Barry Company again next year, so that they rnuht, it possible, eie long bring home the Queen's Pi ize its If. Cap aiu Handcock added that he \\as very pleased to be informed that the victorious detachment had also distinguished themselves for exemplary behaviour at Snoeburyuess. Tile company, which was com- manded by Lieutenant Hoy e, was couipo>ed of the following :—Sergtant-Major Wakeharn, S rgeant R. Wmtnurn, Corporals A. Brookes aud J. W. Jordan, Bombardiers J. Irins, S. Dyer, J. Addi- cott, C. Peuuell, W. Wakeham, W. J. Davies, and A- Denning and Gunners A. Harley, J. Aloyst, W. J. Smith, T. Martin, W. Brown, W. C. James, J. C. Join s, C. Kingdom, and J. Robertson. IMPRESSIONS OF THE COMPETITIONS. Tilis wedc one of our repres ntutiws has been fortunate enough l) secure an interview with Seigt-Major V\ akeham, o ie of the members of the succ-ssful detachment, and was abie to glean from him his i.npre si ns of the comp titions. W hat is your general opinion of the compe- titions," asked our represeutaiive. "0 the competitions were very good, hut I cannot help thinking that they were ratner oue- sided." How do you account for that?" Well, some of lie guns which were used iu the Queen's prize c itipetitions we had never used be- tore, and in fact some of the company had never seen them, more par icularly the naval slid gun." So you were placed under a great disadvan- tage Yes, but under the circumstances we consider the victory a splendid and well-earned one. The result of the Queen's prize competition was in doubt for a long time, and had our men been better ac- quainted with the guns and had better facilities for tiaining, I have not the slightest doubt but that we should have won the chief trophy." What steps do you suggest should be taken to make a more effective show next year ? I have been thinking of asking the officers to consider the necessity ot the men having a better drill hall and more practice. Our own competitions will commence at Lavernock next Saturday, aud continue till the following Saturday, and if these had been held before the Shoeburyness meeting, and I hope they will in future, it would have proved a great factor in improving the efficiency of our men. On this occasion we had to fire against CA, tacliments from Scotland and Durham, who had just com- pleted a week's training at the Barry links in Scot- land, and these, therefore, had an advantage over the local company. I strongly maintain that the competitions at Lavernock should always take place prior to those at Shoeburyness. What is the opinion of your commanding officer, Lieutenant Hoyle, of the conduct of the men?" "He was delighted with the men, aud was so pleased with the performance of the detachment that he intends transferring as quickly as possible from the Cardiff to the Barry Company. We hope next year to be accompauie 1 by Captaiu Handcock, the commanding officer of the company "I suppose you mtend going up again next year ? j 63 arG very vvtJU satisfied with what we have done this year, but hope to make a better show next year. I expect that Cardiff will also send. up a company next year, but at the last meeting only Barry and Penarth represented Glamorganshire."
