The Mayor (A Lloyd Jones, Esq.) was Sain t}je president, and has been inde- igable in his exertions for the success of celebrations. The demand upon his in attending the various committees superintending the perfecting of the frangements has been enormous, but he Ilas carried out all the duties with his 8Ual courtesy, zeal and tact, ably assisted rJ the vice-presidents, Mr W James and r Lloyd, who have energetically and ccessfuliy promoted the undertaking. The farmers' team exhibits Were very limited, only eight, but the few were excellent specimens; the same remark applies to the teams, &c., of the towns- people, but though limited the horses shown were a grand selection and did great credit to the owners and drivers Amongst the horse and cart exhibits was the town sanitary dust cart which got the second prize (owner Mr Evan Evans), Mr W Evans getting first. The tradesmen's exhibits were very much less numerous than usual, only numbering 18, but the quality and effectiveness was good. The farmers' turnouts in saddles were nine only, but included some splendid cobs. Messrs Hughes & Sons, weavers, of Ystrad Factory and Yale-street, as usual had a very ingenious and characteristic display of their celebrated woollen home- made goods. On the lorry drawn by two two splendid horses, the Misses Hughes were dressed in pretty Welsh costume and were busy at the spinning wheels, whilst Mr J T Hughes, junior, was playing the Welsh harp. The whole looked exceedingly well. Mr R Ellis, butcher, who won the' first prize, had his trap most attractively decorated, and some splendid meat was shown, which had been arranged with great taste and surrounded by pretty floral decorations. Mr Thomas Davies, butcher, also had a grand display of meat, which was nicely decorated, and this turnout won the second prize. The Anglo-American Oil Company sent three splendid teams, the Denbigh one getting first prize. Mr R Pierce Davies made a very attrac- tive show of meat. Mr James A Hughes had a lurry and horse and shandry showing different departments of the Factory stores trade. Mr Christmas H Lewis, Vale-street, had his trap spleadidly fitted with provisions and he drove tandem, making a specially good grocers turnout. The single turnouts were numerous and varied and included some splendid horses. The two fire brigades, with four splendid horses to each engine, made a splendid show, horses, men, engines, and appliances presented a brilliant appearance in the glittering sunlight. The Bodrhyddan Brigade, which got the first prize, turned out under the command of Captain Conwy Bell, and the Denbigh Brigade, to which second prize was awarded, turned out under the command of Captain Lloyd. The splendid style in which the both brigades dashed up Vale-street was worth witnessing and did the drivers great credit. This is quite a feature of the procession, for which the crowds of visitors look out with keen interest. CYCLE AND CHARACTER N TURNOUTS. ] Messrs Connah & Co. showed some splendid cycles, amongst which were the mew Hudson free wheel, prettily decorated with flowers, &c., also a Swift cross frame ( cycle, fitted with all the latest improve- ments, and cycle carriers. Mr J T Hughes had a very prettily j decorated cycle. He was also got up in fancy costume. Mr Howell Tudor Hughes appeared 1 dressed up as a milk maid, with milk cans &c. ingeniously fitted to his cycle, and "carrying the milking pail." =Aliss S A Thomas, 11, Ruthin-road, was prettily attired as a Spanish Gipsy and looked exceedingly well. Her cycle was fitted with a pretty floral arch, under which was a cradle with a baby (doll) in, it altogether made a very good show. She was awarded first prize in the character turnouts. Miss Wheway (Vale-street and Ruthin- road), who took the first prize in the cycle turnouts, looked most charming, being got up as a Red Cross Nurse, having her cycle fitted with all the dillereiit appliances, bandages, &c., necessary for attending to the wounded. There was also an effective flnral arch over her cycle, underneath which was an imitation of a Red Cross Van and Horse." Undoubtedly she deserved the first prize for the remarkable pretty and effective turnout. Miss Barron, who, in cycle turnout, won the second prize, made a most effective and artistic representation of Britannia." and had her bike very nicely decorated to suit her own appearance. Mr Robert Langford Lewis, son of Mr Christmas Lewis, Vale-street, was splendidly attired as Lord Mayor of London on State occasions, and for which he won the second prize in the character turnouts. Mr Buller showed some very excellent high class machines, amongst which were splendid specimens of the Singer, Quadrant, Free Wheel, Bayless Thomas and Rover, all fitted with the latest improvements Driver John Davies, of the Royal Artillery, was dressed up as a Kaffir Chief with a characteristic umbrella to keep the sun off. He followed the band and created 1 much diversion. "Kruger" was capitally represented by Mr J Cartwright. Mr Pierce Jones was, as usual to the front, dressed up as a clown, and riding on a donkey, and made a very comical picture. Mr Harnaman, the Asylum, had made a capital imitation of the British Lion before and during the war," the representa- tion of which added much amusement and interest to this part of the show. The ''Travelling bear" and his trainer, with the well known pole with which the bear danoes and performs, was capitally represented by Mr Watson from the Asylum. Mr William Jones, Castle, was dressed up in a very comic nondescript garb, and made a most amusing figure. THE MAY QUEEN'S PROCESSION. In addition to taking part in the general procession round the town, the May Queen and her attendants were conveyed to the Castle at 2.30 p.m. in the special carriages provided for the purpose. Large crowds witnessed the departure and then wended their way by different roads to the Castle. The May Queen this year was Miss Myra Roberts, daughter of Mr and Mrs T H Roberts, Plas Bennett, Llandyrnog. She looked exceedingly nice and carried out her duties of May Queen most admirably and in a dignified and regal manner, and as she went through the crowded streets the spectators expressed very great satis- faction and pleasure at the charming sight the Queen in her beautiful state presented. The May Queen was elegantly attired in a rich white glassy silk dress handsomely trim- med with chiffon and steel sequin and hand- some train of glassy silk. Prior to the coronation and during her procession she wore a white silk bow and a chiffon veil. She was seated in a very handsome carriage drawn by a pair of splendid horses, supplied by Mr John Williams, Crown Livery Stables, and driven by the owner. The carriage was most artistically decorated, a beautiful floral arch had been constructed over the seat, and in the centre over the Queen's head was a lovely floral crown, whilst the other portions of the carriage were decorated in a similarly bright and pleasing manner. The ladies who carried out these decorations with such great taste and beauty were Mrs Bradshaw, Vale- street, and Mrs B Bryan, Park-street. Seated opposite the Queen were her special pages and train bearer these royal attendants also having charge of the floral sceptre and crown. The Mav Queen's special pace and train bearer was Master Norman Lloyd Jones (son of the mayor and mayoress, Mr and Mrs A Lloyd Jones), who acted his part exceedingly well. He was attired in a handsome suit of crimson velvet trimmed with gold, he wore a white satin vest and white silk stockings, also a wig and cocked hat the attire being representative of the Court dress of Charles II. The other two pages were Master Arthur Bellis and Master Johnnie Edgar, who were dressed in very pretty white drill man-of- war suits. They were most appropriately got up and filled their respective parts splendidly and to the satisfaction of all. These dresses were excellently made at the establishment of Mr T Pierce Hughes. The maids of honour (who were seated in a carriage and pair of horses kindly lent by Mr Thomas Williams, Llewesog), pre- sented a most picturesque appearance, the beautiful dresses reflecting great credit upon Mrs T Pierce Hughes, Vale-street. They were attired in pretty primrose colour English silk, with white sashes, and wore crinoline hats trimmed with primrose silk. The maids of honour" were Misses Ethel Buller, Highgate Gwennie Green, High- street Gwennie Lewis, Vale-street; Cora Robinson, Twysog; Ada Vaughan, Vale- street; and May Williams, High-street. The beautiful floral hoops carried by the "maids of honour" were presented by Mrs Harry Bowdage, Vrondeg, and made by her. Upon arriving at the Castle the Queen's procession formed up on the Stanley Lawn. The May-pole dancers, floral dancers, scarf dancers, and the musical drillers led the way, followed by the maids of honour, pages, and the May Queen, the whole forming a most beautiful and picturesque scene as they proceeded along the side entrance on to the well kept lawn, and along a pathway to the throne, which had been substantially erected by Mr Edward Myddleton, Postofiice-lane, and was decora- ted with evergreens and flags, &c. The structure was covered in with canvass, but contrary to former years, the sub-committee in charge of these arrangements had had the sides of the platform also covered with the canvass. The first portion of the pro- cession was followed by four Volunteers, namely:—Messrs J C Davies, T A Davies, R Price Joaes, R Crisley, and Bandmaster C M Humphreys, who immediately pre- ceding the Queen's retinue, played the bugle march as the procossion proceeded. The various sections of dancers, composed of the boys and girls already named, opened out as a guard of honour as the May Queen, with becoming dignity and grace, and, her retinue passed up to the throne; the train bearer excellently attending to his duties, and the .pages bearing the sceptre and the crown on a velvet cushion. Tiie Queen having been seated on the throne, the pages, maids of honour, and others made obeisance to her majesty as they approached the throne and took up their respective positions. The Queen acted her part splendidly and was most stately and queenlike in her movements and throughout her part. The maids of honour and pages were equally efficient and acted the parts in the most superb manner, rendering the scene most perfect and ex- tremely beautiful, evoking the admiration of the thousands of delighted spectators. Just in the rear of the Queen's pro- cession followed the Mayoress (Mrs A Lloyd Jones), escorted to the platform by Mr J Parry Jones, and the Mayor (Mr A Lloyd Jones) escorting Mrs Parry Jones, and took their seats on the platform near the throne. At this point the Mayor came forward. The Mayor (A Lloyd Jones, Esq.) said it gave him very great pleasure to see such a large concourse of people present, and he had more pleasure in thanking all the ladies ind gentlemen who had supported them in endeavouring to secure tne success of the May-Day. He felt sure that the demon- stration in the Castle would be successful. He was thankful to the subscribers, who had contributed so liberally. He had very great pleasure in calling upon Mr J Parry Jones to Crown the Queen for Mr Parry Jones was a gentleman who always did his utmost for the prosperity of the town of Denbigh (applause). Mr J Parry Jones stepped forward amidst tremendous cheering, and said he con- siderod himself proud of the privilege that the ladies committee had bestowed upon him in asking him to crown the May Queen for the year 1901 (applause). He must say that he congratulated Miss Myra Roberts upon being the first May Queen crowned in Denbigh in the first year of the new century, and also on being the first May Queen for Denbigh crowned in the first year of the reign of King Edward VII (cheers). In other adjoining towns the May Queens were crowned either by ladies or little boys. so that he was specially favoured in being asked to crown the May Queen here. He was very pleased to see such a large attendance present. He would not detain them, as there was an excellent programme to be gone through, and he wouJd therefore proceed to crown Miss Myra Roberts May Queen for the ancient borough of Denbigh for the year 1901 and until her successor was appointed (loud applause). All arrangements having now been duly made the pretty ceremony of crowning the May Queen took place which was carried out most admirably by Mr J Parry Jones, who after having placed the crown on Her Majesty's head, knelt down as a loyal and patriotic subject should do, and kissed her hand, the whole pretty ceremony eliciting the htartiest plaudits and appreciation of the immense gathering, Mr Parry Jones performing the task with becoming dignity and expressing the fervent hope that she may have long life and happiness. Having been crowned the page with the sceptre, Master J Edgar, came forward prettily and gracefully did homage to the Queen and handed to her the sceptre token of her power and dignity. After the crowning, Mrs Parry Jones in the most graceful and courtly manner, pre- sented the Queen with a magnificent boquet of choice flowers, her own beautiful gift. Mr W G Helsby, Vale-street, took ex- cellent photographs of the May Queen and her attendants whilst arranged near the throne, as well as of the various sections of dancers and drill boys. After the ceremony of crowning the Queen, an excellent exhibition was given of musical drill by the boys named previously, under the able tuition of the master, Mr E J Roberts, all doing their parts well and such as to obtain great appreciation. This was followed by some marvellous acrobatic performances given by the Gicardo Troupe of Acrobats. The girls in the scarf drill then gave an exhibition of their skill which they did in the most excellent style, and in which they looked very pretty, for which Miss Davies, head-mistress of Frongoch Girls' School, is to be heartily congratulated and praised for the manner in which they had been trained. The splendid performance of the floral dancers from the National Girls' School was greatly admired, and the full appre- ciation of the audience was unmistakable. The children (named previously) who had tambourines with long floral sprays at- tached to them, performed their respective parts with remarkable skill and appropri- ateness, whilst they looked exceedingly pretty and presented a gay and striking appearance, the whole performance reflect- ing the greatest credit upon their head mistress, Miss Cresswell, who must have had a considerable amount of trouble in bringing them to such perfection. The May-pole dancers next gave their clever exhibition in dancing around the May-pole, which had been decorated for the occasion with evergreens and flowers, and when the dancers had entwined around the pole with the many coloured ribbons, it presented a most pretty appearance. Mr E J Roberts, who has trained the dancers for many previous years, is to be congratulated for the way in which they performed their different parts, and also for the training of the musical drill children. The Gicardo Troupe then gave another excellent exhibition of their skill. The excellent band of the Volunteers, under Bandmaster C M Humphreys, played most appropriate selections of dance music for the whole of the dancing of the children and other music during the acrobatic performances, and at the conclusion of the proceedings at the Castle the band playei some pretty and popular selections of music on the Square, which was much appreciated by a large crowd. TUG OF WAR COMPETITION. Great interest was manifested when the tug-of-war competition came on, the im- mense crowd rushing to the top lawn near the boys' swings, which had been specially fenced round for the occasion, but the spectators were so numerous and became so excited that they broke into the enclosure and there was great difficulty in keeping them back during the contest. Ten' teams had entered, but all did not turn up. The following were the teams entered :—Llan- bedr team, Saw Mills No. 1 and No. 2 teams, Mr Roger Pryce's team, Abergele team Mr T Ellis' team, Llanrhaiadr; Mr Robert Jones' team, Denbigh Mr Robert Jones' team, Llanrhaiadr; Aberwheeler team and Mr W Batten's Graig team. In the first round, No. 1 Saw Mills Team beat the Llanbedr Team easily. There was a good tussle between the Aberwheeler and Graig Teams, and after a good pull the Graig Team won. Mr Robert Jones' Team bad a bye, also No. 2 Saw Mills and Mr T Ellis' (Llanrhaiadr) Team. In the second round, No. 1 Saw Mills Team beat No. 2 Team, and Mr Robert Jones' Team beat Mr T Ellis' Team. r In the third round, No. 1 Saw Mills Team had a bye to the final, and Mr Robert Jones' Team pulled against the Graig Team the latter winning. The contest between No. 1 Saw Mills Team and the Graig Team in the final was very good. The Graig Team won two pulls out of three and came oil victorius thus winning the first prize, No. 1 Saw Mills. Team taking second prize. Tho arrangements in the Castle were sarried out by a sub-committe consisting of | tne Mayor, Mr uavia wiiuams, oi.rniary s Villa, and Mr Bradshaw, Vale-street, GATHERING AT THE CASTLE. The crowd at the Castle was of immense proportion, and the sight was a splendid one. The amount taken this year for admissions was £ 66 10s; the takings last year being i'63 17s 8d, thus showing an increase of 12 12s 4d. The Castle ticket holders were admitted free, which of course greatly increased the crowd of spectators. THE MAYOR'S THANKS. The Mayor desires, through the medium of our columns, to thank all those ladies and gentlemen who so kindly assisted in making the Sixth Annual May-Day Festivities at Denbigh so great a success, and the inhabitants generally, for the excellent display of bunting made. He also wishes to express his gratification at the extremely orderly behaviour of the 1 vast numbers assembled throughout the iay, and also that not a single case of irunkenness was reported by the police.

NORTH DENBIGHSHIRE PERMANENT BUILDING SOCIETY. The annual meeting was held in Denbigh yesterday (Thursday), when Mr Ellis Williams (chairman) presided over a fairly good attendance. The secretary, Mr William Parry (Denbigh), read the annual report:— THE REPORT OF THE DIRECTORS. The directors desire to present to the members their annual report and statement of accounts for tl.e year ending March 2nd, 1901. Compared with the previous year, the receipts and payments show an increase of some thousands. This increass is to be attributed chiefly to the fact that the directors succeeded, in the course of the year, in their effort to sell several of the properties which were in the Society's possession, nnd they wish to assure the members that due care has been taken to secure the highest possible prices for them and it is their determination to continue in their efforts in this direction, trusting the co- operation of the members will be extended to their., as in the past. It will be seen from the accounts that the I larger portion of the amount received during the year has been appropriated for the pay- ment of shares under notice of withdrawal and the Directors would call the special attention of the members to the importance and desirability of utilising the receipts of the Society, in the future, to do new business, and thereby earn more profit for the benefit of the members; but in order to accomplish this object, they would urge upon the members the advisability of allowing, as far as practicable, their shares to remain in the Society. The Directors are cf opinion that some means should be adopted, in conformity with the rules, to increase the funds of the Society, thereby enabling them to entertain applica- tions for advances on property from intending borrowers and they desire to intimate to the members their intention to take into consider- ation the desirability of receiving deposits, subject to special terms as to interest and repayment. The Directors propose that the dividend be the same as the previous year, viz., X3 10s per cent on shares for which there is no notice of withdrawal on the books, and Xl per cent on those shares now under notice, and on shares for which notice of withdrawal may be received during the current year. In conclusion, we beg to return our sincere thanks to the officers of the Society for their untiring efforts on its behalf during the year. It is with regret the Directors record the death, during the past year, of Mr John Ellis, their Agent at Cefn Mawr, Ruabon. The Directors whose term of office has expired are Messrs John Hughes, John Davies, and J Howel Gee; and being eligible for re-election, they offer themselves accordingly. The Directors propose the appointment of the following gentlemen as Arbitrators, accord- ing to Rule 15. viz., Messrs J Harrison Jones, Dr Griffith Williams Roberts, A Foulkes- Roberts, and David Knowles, all of Denbigh, and Mr Fred Llewellyn Jones, of Holywell. All the Deeds have been carefullv inspected, and the Accounts duly audited by Messrs Jones and Thomas, Chartered Accountants, Liverpool, whose certilicate will be found appended to ths Statement of Accounts." The Chairman in proposing the adoption of the report said that last year was a very successful one in the history of the Society and that the report on the whole was a very satisfactory one (applause). The motion was seconded by Mr Thomas Hughes, Penybont, Rhuddlan, and carrie 1. On the motion of Mr Thomas Williams, Bodfari, seconded by the Rev Robert a Griffith, Denbigh, the chairman, the retir- ing directors, the solicitors, the architect, and the secretary were re-elected. Mr Robert Owen (Denbigh) moved, and Mr Mills (Denbigh) seconded, a of thanks to the agents of the Society v i'.ii a request that they should continue their services. The motion was unanimously agreed to. Mr R W Thomas, Liverpool, the auditor of the Society, said that he had made a most careful examination of the books and had found everything most satisfactory. He referred to the stability of the Society, and said it was now in a perfectly sound condition. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr Thomas. An excellent tea was then provided for those present, the caterer being Mrs Evans, confectioner, Vale-street.

CORWEN. PHE LATE MISS HUMPHREYS. THE QUEEN'S. Quite a gloom was cast over the town and eighbourhood of Corwen on Monday mowi- ng when it became known that Miss Annie lumphreys, the beloved, and the only un- larried daughter of Mrs Humphreys, The )ueen's had passed away. Miss Humphreys who was oO years of age, lived with her mother at the Queen's Bakery, and had practically the sole control of the extensive business. there. She occasionally suffered from bilious headache and did not feel very well during the whole of last week. She felt worse on Friday and retired to bed that evening earlier than usual. and by Saturday morning she became seriously ill and her medical attendant (Dr Walker) did everything that medical skill could do, and on Saturday afternoon called in Dr White in consultation. Miss Humphreys became quite unconscious on Saturday afternoon and remained so until she passed away about half past eleven on Monday morning. The immediate cause of her death was. inflamation of the brain and paralysis. She and her mother had been very much affected by the sudden death of her brother, Mr W Evan Humphreys, which took place about six months ago. Miss Humphreys was a tender-hearted young lady and kindness itself to all who came in contact with her. She was ever most willing and ready to render help in connection with good move- ments in which ladies are the moving spirits. Her circle of friends was very large, her aimable, gentle disposition en- dearing her to all, young and old, rich and poor. She was an active member of the Corwen Philharmonic Society, a first-ciass accompanist, and bad given her valuable services in that capacity at hundreds of entertainments. The funeral, which was public, took place at Corwen, yesterday (Thursday). The cortege, which was exceptionally large, was representative of all classes in the locality. At the house prayers were offered by the Rev Rees Jones, Carrog, who with the Rev L E Davies, Llaqar, officiated in the absence through illness of the rector, the Rev D Griffith. The pro- cession was headed by the Corwen Phil- harmonic Society. At the churchgate they were met by the Church Choir and as the cortege entered the church Mr Warhurst played 0 Rest in the Lord." The opening prayers were read by the Rev Rees Jones, and the lesson by Dr Walker. The combined choirs effectively sang the following well-known hymns: Bydd myrdd o ryfeddodau," A'r lan Iorddonen ddofn," 'On the resurrection morning," and the anthem, Come unto Him (Gounod). During the offertories Mr Warhurst played Chopin's funeral march, and after the con- cluding prayers had been read by the Rev L E Davies, Mr Warhurst played the "Dead March in Saul"—the vast con- gregation kneeling. At the graveside the Rev L E Davies read the remaining prayers, and the combined choirs again sang the well-known Welsh hymn, "0 Fryniau Caersalem," &o. MAIUIIAGK.—On Thursday last. the marriage was solemnised of Mr Charles Ellis and Miss Marian Clara Chapman, tho Hev T W Vaughan, vicar, officiating. The bride, who looked charming, was- given away by her grandmother, and was attired in a purple travelling costume, and wore a grey hat with ostrich feathers, and carried a lovely bouquet of flowers, the gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Miss Chapman, and Miss Louie Chapman, sisters, and Miss Ellis, sister of the bridegroom. and their costumes were of. royal blue with white hats. Mr Joseph Owen Jones, obiciateclas best man. After the ceremony light refreshments were partaken of at the house of Mrs Wynne,. Church-street, and afterwards the wedding party were photo- graphed. The presents were both useful and costly and very numerous. The happy pair left by the 12.10 train from Rhyl en route for Southport, where the homevmoon will be spent.

-+- RHUDDLAN PARISH COUNCIL. At the first meeting of the new Conneil at Rhuddlan. Mr W Coawy Bell proposed, and Mr R C Enyon seconded, the appoint- ment of Mr W Jones, Church Gates, the vice-chairman of the late Council, and a Parish Councillor from the establishment of the Council.—Passed unanimously. Mr Joseph Roberts proposed, and Mr R C Enyon seconded, tho election of Mr W Morris (Hendre) as vice-chairman, and it was unanimously agreed to. The following were appointed overseers Messrs Charles W Jones, R Morris (Hendro), Owen Williams (Cwybr Fawr), and John Roberts (Central Stores). The Council resolved that the Clerk; should provide a schedule of all books avai papers belonging to the Council, also that a safe be provided.
