----CYCLING NOTES. ) --:0:-
CYCLING NOTES. ) -:0:- It is only when caught in a heavy storm of rain that the mudguard pessimist acknowledge their mistake. A fine of 40s. was imposed on a Pudse) labourer for furious riding, and knocking down an old lady. A hundred miles road ride promoted by the London B.C. on Wliit-Monday was won on ft pneumatic tyred ordinary. The public will have Dunlop tyres, and these tyres have sold me many a machine." Such is the remark of a northern agent. J t Mr. Dan Leno, Mrs. Dan Leno, and all the little Dan Leno's (six in number) are all cyclists, even the baby riding a toy machine. [ At the Military Exhibition now being held at Earl's Court and the Crystal Palace, mili- tary cyclists figure somewhat prominently, an interesting exhibition being given by the 2Gth Middlesex Rifle Corps at the former, whilst at the Glass House of Sydenham it is intended that the military cyclists should give a daily display very shortly. ) We certainly pity some of the drivers of the carrier tricycles used by many of the shop- keepers in the West of London especially now thai the sun is increasing in power and the dry hot days of June and July are before them. The storekeepers, with a view of advertising, bp.ve commenced to dress riders of their car- rier tricycles in tight fitting uniforms, effective no doubt, but not calculated to assist the pro- pulsion of the frequently over-loaded carrier. Many punctures may be prevented by the expedient of tying a piece of wire or strong string across the front forks and back stays of a cycle, about an eighth of an inch from the tyrs. In this manner many tacks, splinters, thorns, etc., are pulled out from the outer cover before they have had time to work through into the inner tube. This puncture preventer is easily fixed and very effectual, but for some reason or or other is not so extensively used as it deserves to be. Tandem riding last year lost a lot of ground in public popularity, indeed mixed tandems were very seldom met with, both ladies and gentlemen preferring riding single machines in preference to the harder work that tandem riding undoubtedly gave at times. But now a revival seems to have set in for this mode of riding, which is certainly very enjoyable pro- viding the machine is geared low. It is the high gearing that kills tandem riding; and if a gear not exceeding 70 was fixed upon, mixed tandem riders would find that they could cover far greater distances with less fatigue than would be the casa were they mounted on singles. <% — The London parks Me being neglected by the society bikist. Even Battersea Park, which retained a reputation the longest for being the resort of cyclists, is showing many signs that the day of Park riding is over. This fact, how- ever, must not give rise to the impression that the aristocracy are forsaking the wheel, leaving the pastime to their poorer relations, for on any fine Sunday as well as week-days many daintily dressed ladies may be seen riding in the neigh- bourhood of Richmond, Kingston, and Thames Ditton, the most convenient exits for those who reside in the West End. /*■; -• .•» I A rough-edged instrument should never be used in removing a Dunlop outer cover, as by so doing the fabric is liable to be torn from the wires, and a burst may result. Most Dnnlop tyres can be detached with the fingers alone if the directions are properly carried out; but in the event of one being rather stiff, a small smooth lever, such as the handle of a tooth brush, or something similar, may be carefully used. It is however, very seldom that any trouble is experienced in removing outer covers, even ladies and children now attending to their own "Dunlops." I Some of the railway companies are falling I into line with the London, Brighton and South' Coast Railway in granting concession to cyclists; but some of these concessions are very doubtful indeed, especially in the excursion advertised by the London & North Western Railway in which they offer to take cyclists into Shakes- peare's country (Warwickshire) at the return fare of 15s. ld. It is difficult to see where the advantage lies considering that another com- pany has for some years now issued week-end return tickets to the same district for a matter of 12s 9d. and Sunday day tickets for even less. a Amongst the growing evidence of the useful- ness and utility of the cycle might be mentioned the ride of the Rev. J. Rawlings of Wilcannia in New South Wales, who, wishing to attend the Synod of the Diocese Riverina at Hay, was unable to find any conveyance to carry him over the 256 miles of road which divided him from the town where the annual Synod was being held. It was casually suggested that he should make use of a cycle and the idea was immediately taken up. The cycle is fast super- seding the horse amongst the clergy of Aus- tralia for travelling purposes, which is extremely satisfactory considering that it waB looked on a few years back as infra dig for gentlemen of the cloth to be seen on the wheel. It is now be- coming quite customary for a cycle to form part of a clergyman's outfit. "t
