Over M300 in pensions is posted to 2,000 Widows every Friday, amounting to over £ 40,000 per annum. Now, what have these Widows done to get this £ 40,000 per annum ? They have every week during their husband's life- time purchased î a lb. of Nelson's Pension Tea. Are there not many more who will purchase f a lb. of Tea every week, when by so doing they qualify themselves for a pension of 10s. per week for life, providing they remain Widows ? Will it not be a splendid New Century Resolution to purchase Nelson's Pension Teas? If you will send us your name and address we shall be pleased to send you the name and address of our nearest Agent. We have over 3,000 Agents in the United King- dom, and a large number of Branches. Men and Women desiring an Agency for the sale of our Tea are invited to apply for terms. On his Dnnlop tyred safety C. H. Threlfitit won the half mile and five miles championships of the Liverpool centre of the N.C.U." i In Vancouver, cyclists are prohibited from learning the cycle in the public thoroughfares, also no wheelman may ride with his hands off the handle bars. I In spite of frequent warning we find that many cyclists still indulge in the very danger- ous practice of hanging on to motor cars. Doubtless a motor proves a valuable pace maker, but the dangers attached to the practice are too great for even the most expert cyclist. The cyclist volunteer movement is quietly extending in many parts of the country, and although not recognized officially by the War Office to the extent that such a good cause demands, cyclists are perfecting themselves in the various manoeuvres necessary. The voltm- ( teers of Lancashire and Cbeshire have recently done excellent work in connection with des- patch riding, and although on the occasion of the trials the weather was far from favourable, the result was unanimously declared to be most satisfactory. j In thel early days of cycling, when clubs mus- ] tered in tinif orm, tightly fitting and elaborately braided, and wore head gears of hard uncomfor- table helmets, the bugler was an important personage amongst the club officers, but now ) he is conspicuous by his absence, for which many thanks. In connection with the annual church parade which took place at Hexham, the promoting club circularised others in the district with the request that in the event of their possessing a bugler they should ask him to leave his bugle at home. It is really delightful to tour in France, the railway companies there doing all they can to encourage wheelmen to avail themselves of the lines. In place of exorbitant charges made by home railways for the carriage of cycles, the French railways will take a machine at a cost of one penny any distance, and naturally wheel- men are not slow in taking advantage of the railway to travel farther afield. Many of the ordinary trains for Paris have something like seven or eight specially constructed cycle vans attached, How different it is to take a cycle by rail in this country. Say you wished to travel a matter of fifteen miles, you would have to pay 9d. or Is. for the carriage of the machine and stand all the racket of damage that might be caused to it in the journey. Then you gener- ally have to place the machine yourself into the guards van, and are expected to tip the guard when taking it at the journey's end. Civility is not a thing to be always expected from railway servants, as a correspondent writing to a cycling paper has found when he was complaining that on taking a tandem bicycle by railway he was given two tickets, j one for a perambulator and the other for a dog, j to pass the double machine through. I Mr. J. Bailey in his expedition to Khartoum j via Mombasa,- Uganda, and Lake Victoria covered a large portion of the distance per covered a large portion of the distance per cycle, either riding on in advance of his caravan j or cycling at walking pace with his men. It was a long and trying course that had to be covered, the only roads being the track of the natives, which were seldom more than 18 inches broad, and covered with long sharp thorns. Yet daring the whole journey only four punct- ures were met with, and the almost unbearable heat had no effect upon the Dunlop-Welch tropical tyres with which his machine was fitted. On one occasion Mr. Bailey succeeded in persuading a naked Bari native to ride the machine whilst he held him, greatly to the exoitement and wonderment of the other mem. bers of the village. People cannot realise the amount of broken glass carelessly thrown upon the highways un- til they make a point of watching and actually seeing for themselves. Fortunately during the last year or two vigorous steps have been taken to stop the practice, and numerous police court proceedings have been taken against offenders who are invariably convicted. At a case which not long ago came before the Darlington Coun- ty justices it was stated in evidence that the defendant after having drunk a bottle of beer, deliberately smashed the bottle on the high. way, which practice is apparently quite regu- lar in that district. However after paying v* fine of IOs. as well as the costs, the defendant will mead his ways. Cyclists have been so frequently advised to only buy their machines from firms of repute that those who are taken in by the catchy announcements of unknown firms who from time to time advertise in the general and cycling press, have only themselves to blame, and we cannot sympathise with them in their misfortunes. Not long ago there ap- peared in certain papers published at sufficient distances from London calculated to prevent intending purchasers from visiting the firm's place of business, an advertisement to the effect that Messrs. H. J. King & Co. of 50, Wilson St., Finsbury Sq., London, were making a special offer of fifty of their" King" bicycles for one pound each, the offer being made with the idea of introducing their bicycles to the British public instead of spending large suns of money on newspaper advertisements. All the public had to do to take advantage of this "liberal 11 offer was to send to the firm a postal order for 20s. and the senders of the first fifty letters opened on a certain day would receive by return one of their ten guinea bicycles. Acknowledgments of the P.O's. not being re- ceived, enquiries were naturally made when it was discovered that such a firm did occupy premises at 50, Wilson Street until the date I specified for opening the letters, when, having cashed the numerous postal orders they receiv- ed, they cleared out leaving their stock in trade of opened envelopes, a penny ink pot and a cross nibbed-pen.
