ABERGELE NOTES. A young horse belonging to Miss Owen* Bee Hotel, was being driven by a lady visitor from Bettws towards Abergele on Wednesday last, and when coming at a nice trot along the Llanddulas road, the animal took fright and became unmanageable, with the result that it bolted at a terrific pace. When near the top of Sea-road, a man called on the lady to jump out, which she did, and by so doing she was saved from what appeared to be certain death, because the horse, in turning from the main road to the hotel yard, came in contact with one of the gate pillars, upsetting the trap and smashing it to pieces. Strange to say, the lady escaped with but one or two slight bruises about the head and face. "-M What a day the trippers from Abergele had at Aberystwyth last Thursday. Talk about raining cats and dogs Camels and mules would have been nearer the mark. Several of the unfortunate thought it the better part of valour to stay in the station all day where they made sure of shelter and dry skins. They won't forget their six hours at the seaside and 11 hours in the train in a hurry, but the latter was the better part, for they were in the 4ry. *» Mr Crabbe and the other members of the deputation who went to London to oppose the Rhyl Improvement Bill were the guests of Mr J Herbert Roberts, M.P., for the best part of a day. They were shown over the House of Commons and entertained to a grand tea on the Terrace, and, best of all, within speaking distance to the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, who was also indulging in the cup that cheereth. Be it known unto you that all the training you may do in preparation for the Abergele Athletic Sports, alleged to take plsoe on the first Monday in August, is so much physical energy wasted. The matter was thoroughly threshed out by a responsible committee on Friday night last, and after an hour and a half's House of Common's-like debate, it was there and then agreed upon "that the sports would not pay in con- junction with the horse show." DYSE-RT El. FESTIVAL OF PARISH CHOIRS. On Thursday of last week, a number of parishes in the deanery of St Asaph, comprising Rhyl, Meliden, Dyserth and Rfruddlan, held their festival at Dyserth Church. Unfortun- ately the weather was most unfavourable, and the rain poured all day. Notwithstandittg this there was an excellent muster. English service was held at 3 p.m. The Rbyl choirs only were surpliced and sat in the Chancel. Mr Vinninf, organist ef St Thomas', Rhyl, conducted, and Mr Thomas, organist of Dyserth Church, presided at the organ. The anthewa was "O give thanks unto the L'erd," by Sir G J Elvey. It was very creditably rendered, as was also the whole service. The Rev Bickerton C Edwards intoned the praters. The first lesson was read by the Vicar of Rfauddiaii, and the seeond by the Vicar of Rhyl. The sermon was preached by the Bishop of-the Diocese. His Lordship toek for hiy text Gen. XXXII, 27, What is thy name," and delivered an earnest and practical address, and spoke encouragingly to the choirs and to the part they were pri- vileged to take in the services of the sanctuary. The Welsh service was afc 7 p.m. The prayers were again intoned by the Rev B C Edwards, the Vicar of Rhyl taking the latter portion of the service. The first lesson was read by the Rev E M Richards, curate of Rhyl, and the second by the Rev R Jones, curate of Meliden. The anthem was u 0 Arglwydd ein lor," by Henry Gadsby. Mr Edward Evans, choir- master of Rhuddlatr Church, oonductoed the anthem, and the whole ef the service were exceedingly well rendered, and showed that there had "been very careful preparation. Before the sermon, instead of a. hymn, "0 Brynwr mswr y byd," by Sir John Gogs, was sung with great heartiness and pathos. the preacher was the Rey Canon Griffith Jones, Vicar of idostyn. He took for his text 2 Chronicles V, 13. The Rev gentleman delivered « most telling and eloquent) address in his usual impressive style. He gave excel- lent advice to the choirs, which should bring forth good fruit. At the fclose df the service, the "Te Deum," as arranged by Berthold Tours, was it is a very difficult piet. THE AFFAIRS OF A RHYL HOTEL COMPANY. At the Bangor County Court, yesterday, the petition for the winding-up of the Belvoir Hotel, Rhyl, was again mentioned by Mr Lewis Jones, Mr S R Dew appearing for Mr Middlehurst, the chairman of the directors and Mr Neville Williams for certain creditors! -Mr Lewis Jones complained that Mr Middle- hurst had repeatedly broken his undertaking to pay over aO and had obtained repeated ad- journments extending over six months. Some creditors had been paid, but others had been left out in the cold.—Mr Dew said that Mr Middlehurst was the largest creditor, and was anxious to preserve the property so that every- one should be paid in full.—Mr Middleburst, in his evidence, said that the undertaking had been under-capitalised, and to keep it going he had advanced £1700. He had been endeavouring to realise the property, and was anxious to do the best for his fellow-share- holders. Ho had personally found 1150 to discharge the pressing debts for gas and coal. He was putting down all the money without security, and a Manchester firm was prepared to invest P,1500 in the undertaking. His object was that the concern should not go down, and he was prepared to sacrifice at least C1,000 ef his shares so as to satisfy the creditors.—The Judge: We have heard the same thing before, but we don't seem to get any nearer.—Reply- ing to Mr Lewis Jones, Mr Middlehurst said that he was the largest debenture bolder. Executions had been put in, and were returned nulla bona.—The Judge: These adjournments are simply trifling with the court and adding to the costs. The petition mast go unless the money is paid. --illr Lewis Jones: I am tired of the whole thing.—Hie Honour: And so am I. I shall make an order for winding-up unless the petitioners are satisfied by the next court.

DEATH OF THE RECTOR OF MARCHWIEL. The ReT Enoch Rhys James, rector of Marchwiel, Wrexham, died rather suddenly at the Reotory ou Friday night. The deceased clergyman, who was in his sixty-eighth year, was at one time rector of Prestatyn. From Prestatyn he went te Llangollen, where he was vicar for twenty-eight years. Five years ago he was preferred to the valuable living of Marchwiel, which he held to the time of his death. Mr James had a severe attack of influenza some three months ago, and since that time he had been far from well. He had, however, officiated moat of the time, and conducted services last Sunday. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Marchwiel Church in the presence of a large number of clergy, parishioners, and friends. Prior to the intermeat a funeral service was held at the Rectory, which was conducted by the Rev Canon Fletcher, of Wrexham. A large number of people attended from Llangollen, of which deceased was vicar for 28 years, and the choral portion of the funeral service was ren- dered by the combined choirs of Marchwiel and Llangollen. The officiating clergymen were the Roys Roe-er Williams, Llanelly T Lloyd Williams, Wrexham; David Jones Abergele and Canon Fletcher, Wrexham The w w^UrnerlrWere the Rev Novell James, Wimbledon; Messrs Hennell, Arthur, and William James (sons); the Rev Carrog Jenes rector of Llangadvan (son-dn-law) the Rev Roger Williams, Pontardulads (brother-in-law) the Rev H Eaton Thomas, Denbigh and Mr Walter C Luttman, Maidstone. The Pregs Association learns that Mr Alfred Thomas presided over a meeting of Welsh Liberal members, at Westminster en Tuesday evening, when, after some discussion, it was resolved to give notice of the following amend- ment to the Education Bill: —"That no system of educational organisation will be satisfactory to this House which does not provide for the full popular control of all btate-aided schools, whether secondary, technical, or elementary, or which makes it possible for public funds, whether national or local, to be given in aid of sectarian schools." |

DENBIGH BOROUGH, POLICE COURT. FKIBAY.—Before the Mayor (Mr A Lloyd Jones), Messrs W Mellard, Robert Owen, ROB Clough, and John Davies. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. Maurice Davies, John Morris, John Wynne, and Isaac Jones, Denbigh, were summoned for neglecting to send their children regularly to school. Mr William Francis Jones, school attendance officer, prosecuted on behalf of ] the Denbigh School Board, and the de- fendants were each fined 6d and costs. IGNORANT OF THE LAW. Joha Jones, of Hafod Lon, Cerrig, was summoned for having Lremovod 50 couples of sheep from Merionethshire, contrary to regulations. Police-constable Thomas Williams, prose- cuted.—The defendant pleaded guilty and stated that he acted in ignorance of the law. The Chairman announced that it was within their power to impose j1. fine of £5 in respect of each animal removed, but they would deal leniently with the case, and defendant would be and 2s 6d and costs. 4-

OPENING OF THE NEW WATER SUPPLY OF TBE NORTH WALES COUNTIES' ASYLUM. INTERESTING PROCEEDINGS &T NANTGLYN. 1 For ther first time in the history of Nantglyn the new water supply from Bryntrillyn, known as the North Wales Counties Asylum Water Scheme, was opened by Mr Hughes, Glasmor, amidst the cheers of the villagers. After which the Denbigh Fire Brigade gave a very creditable display of work from the new mains, from which the pressure was so strong that Fireman Myddleton, who had charge of the jet, was carried some yards by the force. Col Wynne Edwards, the contractor, invited the brigade and others to a supper j at the Victoria Inn, and every credit is due., for the splendid repast laid,on the'table by Mr and Mrs Roberts. The following is the list of guests present at the supper:—Col Wynne Edwards, Mr J Parry Jones, town clerk of Denbigh; Mr W Barker, Asylum clerk and steward; Mesfcirs David Roberts, Plas Nantglyn Jones, Cadar John Roberts, Penllan Ebenezer Evans, Cadwaladr Hughes, Glasmor Griffiths, Smithy; &c., &c.; Copt Lloyd, Lieuts John Davies and W G Helsby, Engineer L Sayle, Firemen Pryce, Joyce, Myddleton, Edgar, Lloyd, Hughes, Jones, and Williams. After ample justice had been done to the good things provided, the chairman, Col Wynne Edwards, proposed, the health of King Edward VII in suitable terms.. Song by Lieut John M Davies. Mr Wm Barker, clerk to the Asylum Committee, proposed the health of the Denbigh Fire Brigade in aa appropriate speech. Song, Lieut W G Helsby. Captain R W Lloyd responded and thanked the gallant Colonel for his kind- ness in inviting the Brigade, and also Mr Barker for the flatteHn £ terms he used < I about the Brigade, and assured them that I his men were always ready and willing to do their duty. He concluded by proposing I the health of Col Wynne Edwards in eulo- gistic terms. Col Wynne Edwards, in reply to the kind way in which Captain Lloyd proposed his health, said it always gave him pleasure, to meet the Denbigh Fire Brigade, and he was proud of having them at Nantglyn. He must say the engine was not wanted, as the water supply was sufficient to supply, the town of Denbigh. The Denbigh Fire Brigade was second to none in being a smart brigade, and he took it that they all being volunteers accounted for their fine discipline. He hoped very soon that they should have an engine worthy of the Brigade (applause). He proposed success to the Nantglyn Water Works, The water had been brought a long distance, and the Denbigh Asylum had now the finest water i supply in the kingdom (hear, hear). Song, Mr William Evans, Quarries. Mr Ebenezer Evans gave the credit of the works to the contractor, Col Wynne Edwards, and congratulated Mr Barker for having obtained such a grand supply of water. > Mr Barker, in reply, spoke of the kind' mannep the people of Nantglyn had during; the progress of the work put up with a great deal of inconvenience without any, grumbling. Song by Col Wynne Edwards, who intro- duced some amusing local touches regarding the water supply, <&c. Mr J Parry Jones proposed the toast of the "Host and Hostess," and thanked them for the very admirable manner they; had catered for them. Alluding to-the- Fire Brigade he considered that the Town Council had taken a very wise step to get an engine for fire service which was quite, up-to-date. The present engine was quite' out of date, and he hoped they would have an engine that would be a credit to all: concerned (applause). Mr Roberts thanked the Town Clerk and; the company for their kind remarks, and also Col Wynne Edwards and Mr Barkerj for their good efforts with the water supply, j Lieutenant J M Davies then proposed the health of Mr Cadwaladr Hughes. Song, Mr John Evans, Quarries. Mr Cadwaladr Hughes thanked the: company for the very kind manner ii\iwhich they had responded to his health, and he assured them that it was the proudest day of his life to see the village of; Nantglyn's inhabitants provided with a good supply of excellent water, which he hoped the Asylum Committee, through Mr Barker, would be able to charge at a low rate. Mr Barker, referring to Mr Hughes'! remarks, said.that the Asylum cominitteei represented the five counties, and person- ally he could promise nothing as to the' charge for the water. Engineer Sayle proposed the health of the "Town Clerk, Mr J Parry Jones," who suitably responded to the toast. 1 DENBIGH AND FLINT CONGREGATIONAL ASSEMBLY. On Monday the annual meetings of the Congregational Association of the two counties of Denbigh and Flint were held at Coedpoeth. At the first conference the Rev Dr E Pan Jones (Mostyn), the chair- man for the year, delivered his presidential I address. Mr Josiah Thomas, of Liverpool, the treasurer of the Gronfa," attended the conference as deputation on behalf of the forward movement for raising E20,000 I for church aid purposes. He thanked the union for what it had already done. Their payments to the treasurer amounted to £ (530, and the total payments from the \vbole of Wales amounted to .4*9 300 The Rev D Oliver invited the union to hold next year's Cymanfa at Holywell, and the invitation was accepted.—The Revs J Charles (Denbigh) and 0 J Owen (Poncian) were elected as representatives to the annual meeting of the North Wales Temperance Association.—The Rev D Oliver (Holywell) moved, and the Rev Ivor Jones (Chester) seconded, the following resolution, which was unanimously passed —"That, in view of the Education Bill now before Parliament, this conference would strongly urge that nothing be done to lessen the authority or usefulness of the school boards already constituted through the country. It would further urge that the control of all grades»of education be committed to educational authorities directly elected for the purpose; and further, that a serious responsibility rests on the present Government with reference to the higher elementary education put in jeopardy by the Cockerton judgment. This conference is of opinion that a short Bill should be immediately passed authorising school boards to continue the work they have so usefully conducted, but which is now affected by the judgment named.—The Rev Morgan Davies (Abergele) proposed a resolution asking the union to make arrangements for securing a minimum salary for ministers who are pastors of the churches connected with the union. A discussion followed, in which the Rev R W illiams (Hwfa Mon), Llangollen, and several others took part. Ultimately, on the motion of the Rev R Roberts (Rhos), seconded by the Rev J Charles (Denbigh), the matter was referred to the executive committee of the Church Aid Society.

RENEWAL OF THE TITHE RENT CHARGE RATING ACT. [CONTRIBUTED.] In view of the opposition with which the Government Bill for the renewal of the Tithe Rentcharge Rates Act is threatened, the editor of 1,1 Crockford's Clerical Direct- ory has published a plain statement of the facts. We all, he says, pay rates directly or indirectly if a workman rents a house worth 5s ar 10s a week, there are rates to be paid over and above his rent of £ 10 or E20 a year at about 5s in the X. This amounts to -02 10s 8f X5 to be paid by the tenant in addition to his rent. So the landlord charges him at the rate of E12 10s or C25 so as to include his rates. This is perfectly fair. But what would be the general opinion if, instead of such rates, a working man were to find himself not rated on this principle, but that, in order to assess his rates, his total earnings were calculated, and that if he earned X2 a week, his income of X104 a year was made the basis of his assessment and a claim was made upon him at 5s in the S'and he were rated at zC26 ? What British workman would not feel that he had a. grievance, a very serious, grievance, which needed to be remedied, and to be remedied speedily? This is exactly the condition of the clergy except that they are working men who do not happen to be ranked as such. All their neighbours, whether they be doctors, lawyers, farmers, artizans, or labourers, are assessed only on their rental, but the clergy are assessed to pay rates, as all others do, on their rentals and on their- in some as well. Is this justice ? Can any henest Englishman or Welshman call it justice ? The answer is emphatically no. Were this question once- rightly understood the present iniquity would never be tolerated by any honest, man. So the recent Act, as a small and temporary alleviation, was passed to lessen; this unfair burden, which Mr Gladstone leng ago pronounced to be unjust. So much for the £ 87,000, about which so many bitter complaints have been made. It reduces the unjust rates, levied on clerical. incomes, merely by one-lialf. What is this compared with the rateable t value of the whole of England, or even of a single county 1 It is the merest trifleo To the clergy, hitherto unjastly rated, it only means-the relief; Ðf one-half of a rate unjustly levied. On the 4th oi May, 1897 Mr Gladstone said From the mode in which the rates of the country are levied, the clergyman suffers more than is believed; He pays more in proportittn than he re-i ceives.
