THE EASTERN CRISIS.
THE EASTERN CRISIS. ENGLISH THREAT TO GREECE. Sir Horace Rumbold, the English Minister at Athens, informed M. Deliyannis on Saturday that the British Government was prt p.ired to send a fleet into Greek waters should the Hellenic Govu nment persist n its refusal to disarm, in order to prevent the possibility of an attack upon Tuikey by sea. The correspondent of the Daily News sayj that Lord Salisbury's telegram to the British Minister was to the following effect: Infi rm the Premier of Greece that war with Turkey being unjustifiable, and threatening the interests of other nations, England aas already received tin consent of most of the Great Powers, especially Germany, to prevent by her fleets all action en "the part of Greece by sea." M. Deliyannis replied on Sunday, the correspondent a Jds,stati i g that the Government declined to give way. The Greek fleet put to sea at daybreak with sealed orders. From Athens the correspondent of the Standard telegraphs that, after the rej lyof the Greek Govern- ment had been given to the British Note, the repre- s»i)t»ti\es of the Powers met, ar,d drew up a fresh d. cumt-nt repeatiing the declarations of the English .Minis'er. According to a telegram from Paris the UillowmK is the hxl; of the Collective Note Cons:dei ing the absence of any lepitimate motive ,"I. a war on the part, of Greece against Turkey, as well as the injury such a war must rause to pacific interests, and specially to the commerce of other nations, no naval attack Greece ..{.-niiist Tuikey can be permitted." The Athens correspondent of the Standard, in a ^e.-patch dated Monday, says: The Greek Govern- Ill"llt, m its answer, will, I have reason to know, ii-iiitititin its previous attitude, repeating the aiguments aliea y stt forth m the circular not's. -ind annoucing its determination to pertevire in its resolution, urgel forwaid by a pnoJic "pinion too much exasperated to permit it to 'all hack. Meanwhile, orders have been sent to the froi tim isolating the movements of the army, and the flee, has put to sea for an unknown destination. Thtie was a great popular demonstration yes'ndav, at which iud'gnation was txprc-^ed aL the insult offeied to the na iorsal scver-if nty by the tllleatened intervention of the English fi et, and the G( vernment was called on to lesist for ign interference. '1 Le pub:ic exaspeiation is and intense, and will attain a iitaii^erous height if the combined fleets attempt to enfoict the d cret s of the Powers. A Ministerial organ asserts that the Eng- lish Minister, in communicating the Note. used such language to the Premier that a continuation of friendly relations between them is impossible in the future. It is semiofficially announced at Berlin that the action of England must be vigorously suj ported, it being imj ossib;» f, I t I Powers to suffer the pesoe ij Euivpe to be plate in j opardy by the fire- brand policy of a small >S ate. A telegr;m liooi Belgrade states that. the LOWS fiom Athens has ex r- cised a depressing effect, an inlormal alliance having been ice, nth* airanged between Servia and Greece. The Constantinople correspondent of the Times says that, under thi* impression that some hostile demon- sttht on may be eoon made by Greece, every iffort is b.-iipg strained to complete the Turkish naval prepara- tions and to close the Dardanelles. PAINFUL OJClUUlENOE. A sid occurrence has taken place at the village of Causeway Grefn, b tween Oldbury and Warley. A man named Michael Bailey, 41, who is an engme- diiver, resided with his wile and five children in a small house. A qi;;urel arose between him and his wife, and just before midnight the neighbours were aroused by cries, and f orwards the woman was fourd a s-hort di*t<<nct j" n, her house in an apparently dying con dir.! n..V neighbour informed her husband, wl, o ately ran to the spot, and either through excitement or from some unexplained cause dropped down dead beside his wife on the road. Mrs. Bailey was removed home, and it was then ascertained that she had swallowed a consider- able quantity of poison. Dr. Cunningham applied the stomach pump with success, and the woman admitted that she had attempted to destroy herself.
MORE MURDERS IN PARIS.
MORE MURDERS IN PARIS. There are two more murders reported from Paris. An unfortunate named Eugenie Cabil, aged 21, has stabbed a young man of 19, named Leroux, with a pair of scissors, in the lius Copreau. Death ws almost. in-taut ,ueous. After committing the crime the murderess quietly went to bed, where she was arrested. The victim in the second case is a widow lady of reputed wealth, who lived alone in the-uburb of Vitry. Not having been seen by her neighbours for several days, the police broke into her huuse and found her lying: dead on the floor. The body was half naked, and had evidently been muidered some days before, apparently by strangu- lation. As a large quantity of money and various jewels were found in the house, it is uspumed that the murdc ers must have had some other motive than plunder.
SINGULAR EXPLOSION OF A SHELL.f
SINGULAR EXPLOSION OF A SHELL.f Freder.ck Harris, a workman at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, has been admitted to the Arsenal infirmary suffering from injuries sustained by an explosion which occurred in the shell foundry at the Arsenal. It appears that a 7-pounder shell was being thrown iiuu a furnsce for the purpose 01 being m-bed. when it buist with a l"ud report, and Harris, who was standing near the I-ur- nace, was somewhat baily burntd about the face and head. It is stated that the shell which exploded had been examined for the purpose of ascertaining whether it contained any powder, and it was not therefore probable that any explosive material had been left in it. Under these circumstances the cause of the explosion cannot to an extent be accounted for, and the only explanation forthcoming is that water had got into the shell and had been frozen, and that when it was subjected to the heat of the furu^o^ the expansion of the contents of the shell was sum. cient to burst it.
=====| CELEBRATING THE DEATH…
===== | CELEBRATING THE DEATH OF A KING. A group of Socialists and .Freethinkers living in one of the most revolutionary parts of Paris hr.ve just held a meeting to celtbrate thej unmveis;» of the death of Louis XVI. These individuals thought fit to send out letters of invitation to 13 depudes whom they regarded as descendants of the mem- bers of the famous Convention which \(, ed the decapitation of the King. Among the persons invited were the Comte de Lanjuinais and the Comte Dugue de la Faucon:;eri^, Conseivutivi-s M. Granet, M. Lockioy. M- Sadi-Carnot, M. Daniel Wilson, and others, Republicans. It is unnecessary to say that none of these Deputies put in an ap. pearaiice. Two of the Conservatives, however, did the Socialists the honour of a reply. The Comte dft Lanjuinais wrote "You know precious lit ie history if you think I am poing to glory in yo n company the most monstrous murder ever committed. My grandfather defended Louis XVI. at the peril of his life." Comte Dugud de la Fauconnerie, Deputy for the Oille, replied in similarly sharp terms. The chairman of the meeting (Citizen Udin) id these letters amid cries of Put them in the 1 r. Great commotion reigned in the assembly, and lb seats of vengeance weie vowed against the aristocrats who ventured to condemn the "execution (,t Louis Capet." Good humour was restored b.N, i.,uuthei, letter, that of a Republican who sympathised wit4 the object of the meeting. Two resolutions were then voted, one calling for the demolition of the chapel on the Boulevard Haussman, where some portions oi the remains of Mane Antoinette and her husband are s'ill supposed to lest and the other for .the separation of Church and State.

The contracts for all Government printing for the next ten years are now being pus up in groups. The first group for the printing for the two Krjuses of Parliament has just been tendered for, and, after a close competition, the tender of Messrs. Hansard has been accepted. This firm has held tl,-io office of printers to the House of Commons for more than a century. During a performance of the pantomime Aladdin at the Bolton Theatre Royal, a dense volume of smoke was observed issuing from the centre boxes, accom- panied by a smell of burning. A cry of "fire" was rai-ed, and a panic ensued. Hundreds rushed to the means' of exit, the result being that many were injured severely. The members of the company were greatly alarmed, and several were hurt in a wild endeavour to get out. The cause of the alarm WM the burning of some brown DaDer.
