No. 1, Ash Terrace, Pentre-Ystrad, Dec. 20, 1883. Dear air,— 1 have great pleasure in bear- ing sincere testimony to the value of your Cough Bakam. For a long period I suffered from a cold in my coest which rendered me a burden to myself owing to coogb, shortness of breath, hoarseness, blood-spitting, inability to lie in bed, inability to walk, in fact, inability to do anything except sitting in the corner, and that painful enough very often.. But mercifully, one night a friend called to see me and asked me if I had tried George's Cough Balsam. I replied No," and he advised me to try it, that it would be sore to do me good. So I resolved to give it a trial, and I am glad to state it gave me wonderful relief; and, in my opinion, there is nothing like it for the above ailments. Yours, JOHN JONES." Prepared only by B. A. MR. GLADSTONE'S HOME RULE…
MR. GLADSTONE'S HOME RULE BILL. THE General Election is not yet over, and therefore, the time has not yet come for speaking positively as to the relative strength of parties. One thing, however, is already certain, viz that the Unionists (as they are pleased to term themselves) will have a majority. So much the worse for the country because the agitation for Home Rule will onlv be prolonged. All great measures have had tD to pass through the ordenl of fierce opposition, and in their earlier stages have been defeated, but in the end they have been carried. So it will be with Home Rule. It is founded on justice and sound policy, and will, sooner or later, commend itself to the judgment of the people. The opponents of the measure have gained their present success not by argument, but by gross misrepresentation, and by appeals to ignorance and passion. Mr Gladstone said that the wishes of she Irish people as ex- pressed by an overwhelming majority of their representatives in Parliament ought to have weight. But Unionists all ever the country have been denying that these were representa- tives. If they were not why were they suffered to take their places in the House of Commons ? What constitutes a representa- tive but being elected by A majority of a constituency ? These were so elected. Why I then, deny their representative character ? Because it is said the people vote under the direction of the priests. This is only a bare assertion, but assuming it to be true, what then ? Roman Catholics are accustomed to look to their priests for guidance on all subjects, and if they choose to do so in politics, that does not prevent the giving of their vote being their own act and deed. If all the so-called arguments urged against Mr Glad- stone's measure were examined, they would all be found hollow and worthless. So far | from being at all disheartened by the result of the present election, Mr Gladstone and his supporters have in it the earnest of success. The noble Premier is so high-spirited and indifferent to office, save as enabling him to benefit the country, that we fear he may resign. We hope he will not do so without first submitting to the test of a vote h; Home Rule bill, with such alterations as may have suggested themselves to his mind as improve- ments.
