PRISON REVOLT IN EGYPT. DESPERATE FIGHT IN A MOSQUBI^ A serious prison revolt, which was nob quelled without much bloodshed, has taken place at Damanhour, a place souio 12 miles from Alexandria. Two prisoners in the gaol, who were uuder sentence of death, aided by 18 other convicts, managed to make their escape from the prison. The police at onee started in pursuit, but before they could come up with theui the prisoners took refuge in amos pie. Here a desperate fight took place, in which 13 oi the prisoners were killed and two were wouiulod, while the police had four killed and wounded.

HORRIBLE CRUELTY BY A STEPMOTHER. — i Jean Barrett surrendered to her bail at the Old Bailey, to answer the charge of maliciously wound- ing Florence Lydia Barrett. The case, as revealed by theevidence, was peculiarly repulsive. Prisoner lived with her husband at Commercial-road, Lewisham, and the girl, Florence Barrett, was her stepdaughter. The neighbours had been shocked on many occasions at the maltreatment of the girl by the prisoner, and on one occasion recently, in consequence of some of them seeing 3r hearing something, the relieving officer was communicated with, and he had the child removed to the workhouse, where she was medically ex- amined, and found to have several sores on differenb parts of her body the result of burns, and ib was proved that the prisoner had deliberately pub the poker in the fire, and, when red hot, beat the child on her bare back and legs. The tongue was also on her bare back and legs. The tongue was also bitten in three or four places, evidently done by the child while suffering from the pain of the barns. The London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to children heard of the case, and instituted a prosecution.—The defence was that the injuries to the child were caused by her having fallen into the fire or against the hot bars.—The prisoner was found guilty, and she was .senlienced to twelve months' hard labour.

A CURIOUS DIVORCE SUIT. In the Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division, oefore the Right Hon. the President, the case of Ashcroft v. Ashcroft was heard. In this suit the wife, a lady of property, sought a divorce by reason of the cruelty and adultery of her husband, Mr. Walter Edward Ashcroft. Mr. Deane, who appeared for the petitioner, said that his client was a widow at the time of the marriage, and granddaughter of Constable, the well-known artist. In the course of her business she had occasion to to the Marylebone County Court, and she met the respondent, who was one of the bailiffs there. He made himself very oblig- ing to her, and subsequently offered marriage to her. They were married on October 7th, 188G, at the Registry Office, Marylebone. It would appear that he married her for her money, which he im- mediately tried to obtain. She had an iucome of between £ 000 and £ 700 a year. They lived in furnished apartments in York Street, Portman Square, and there he made the acquaintance of a young woman named Wilson, otherwisaFarbridge. With her he became upon intimate terms. He also treated his wife with cruelty, and upon one occasion when she broke her arm he dragged her into the room and behaved with considerable vio- lence towards her. Afterwards he used threaten- ing language, and said he would throttle her. She went to the police station, and laid an information against him, but withdrew the summons at his re- quest. Subsequently she said that if he promised to behave belter she would live with him again, but he said he would not do that unless she settled £ 200 upon him. She declined to do that, and he again abused her. Mrs. Ashcroft, the petitioner, eaid thab she was a widow when she married the respondent, at) which time she was forty-five years of age and Mr. Ashcroft was twenty-four. She had five children by her first husband. She had a private fortune. Her husband had no means except what he got as a bailiff. The witness then proceeded to bear out the opening statement of counsel as to her hus- band's cruelty. His lordship came to the conclusion that the adultery was prayed, but nob the cruelty, and he l granted a decree of judicial separation with costs. It was stated by Mr. Taylor, who appeared for the respondent, that his client had entered a. I cross-suit for a divorce, which would be heard later.

SHOCKING GUN FATALITY. ) A SOLDIER KILLED. The othei evening, a private in the 1st Lanca- shire ArtiHtry Volunteers named Robert Guy, thirty-three years of age, living in Coveam-terrace, Corinthian-street, Liverpool, was killed while em- ployed in firing a gun. It appears that he was ab practice at Seaforth Battery under Sergeant-in- structor Cliffe, and was one of four men who, at the time the accident occurred, should have been passing the gun-carriage. Instead of doing so, he was looking out of the loophole from which the gun was pointed. When the gun was being run up, several of his comrades noticed his danger and shouted to him. He turned half round when the gun caught him and crushed him against the wall of the battery, breaking several of his ribs and indicting several internal injuries. He was taken to the orderly-room, and I)r. German, of Seaforth, was sent for, but life was extinct before he arrived.

ANOTHER RAILWAY MYSTERY. STKAXGE DISCOVERY AT CARNARVON. On the arrival of the 8.35 a.m. train from Afon- wen at Carnarvon, the other day, Mr. Roberto Hughes, a ticket collector ab the latter station, discovered in a third-class compartmenb a square wooden box, wrapped in brown paper, tied with striug and labelled "Lime street, Liverpool." There was no passenger in the compartment, and as no one claimed the box, Mr. Hughes removed it to the parcel office, where, later in the day, it was found to contain the remains of a female child, apparently about a fortnight old. The body was wrapped up in baby's linen, and covered over with a piece of newspaper. The police were at once communicated with, and are now investigating the affair.

PRACTICAL JOKING. At the County Petty Sessions at Kendal, two ~yonng men named Thomas Doubthwaite and Win. Thompson; sons of farmers, were charged with placing a plough across the road at Bowston Bridge, Burneside, to the danger of passers-by. On the night in question a great deal of damage had been done in the neighbourhood by this kind of prac- tteatt joking," doocf baipg tied, cart wheels placed in the middle of the road,- gates taken off their hinges, and other damage done. The case was proved against the defendants, they having brought the plough from a blacksmith's yard and placed ib across the highway.—The bench characterised the offences as exceedingly silly and dangerous, and imposed a fine which, with costa, amounted to 17a. 6d. each.
