Ystrad Police Court. I NO.N.DAY.- Before the Stipendiary, Dr Davies, Mr T. P. Jenkins, and MrD. W. Davies. KEEPING A HOUSE OPEN DURING PROHIBITED HOURS AT TREALAW.—John Williams, landlord of the Miskin Inn, was charged with keeping his house open during prohibited hours; and Thos. Richards and William Rees were charged with being unlawfully present, on Sunday, 27th July. Sergeant Hoyle said at 11 o'clock on the day in question he visited the inn, and saw the two men there, each with a "blue" of beer before him. The landlord said they were there about an Odd- The landlord said they were there about an Odd- fellows' club He asked him if they could not have seen about the club on Saturday night, and he replied that they could. Thomas Richards and William Rees were sworn, and gave evidence to the effect that they were accustomed to go for a walk with the landlord on Sundays, and as they were standing outside the landlord asked them in, and told them to wait while he looked at the club matter. They each asked for a blue of beer, for which they did not pay. Their evidence in some particulars, however, was contradictory. The landlord was fined 20s, and the two men were fined 10s each. WILFUL DAMAGE AT TYNEYVYDD.—Joseph Jones, Arthur Jones, Joseph Evans, David Harries, John Jones, and David Phillips were charged with wilful damage to a field fence, William Williams, landlord of the Wyndham Arms. said he rented a field between Tynewydd and Blaenrhondda. The field is fenced by wooden rails. He found 28 rails missing on the 6th, and 35 next day. They were 5ft long. The damage done was 14s. P.C. Poyntz called his attention to the damage. Some of the rails were carried away, and those left were broken. P.O. Poyntz said he passed the fence on the 6thTt 6 o'clock, and on his return at 9 he saw defendants by the fence, and heard one of them say, Mind my hand." Arthur Jones and Joseph Evans was holding on the rails, and the other defendants were holding on to them. He saw two of the rails palled off, and on going to the fence missed seven rails, which were all right when he passed previously. All defendants gave him their names except John Jones and David Phillips. For the defence William Clarke, collier, was called, who said he met P.C. Poyntz after passing defend- ants. The defendants were running races. He did not see any of them do anything to the rail- ings Fined 7s each. Mr C. Matthews for the complainant, and Mr Rosser for the defence. THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER AT TREORK Y.—Jenny Rees and Margaret Rees were cha rged w ith assault- ing Hannah Jones. Complainant said on the 29th July defendants, who live 12 yards from her house, came to her door. Jenny struck her on her left cheek, knocking her into the house. Then she dragged her out on to the road, and knocked her down three times, so that she was rendered insensible. Margaret Rees pulled her about, but did not strike her. She was not in a condition to be knocked about. The defendants assaulted her because she would not believe what they told her about a young man. Jenny wanted the young man, but he won't have anything to do with her. Mary Edwards, wife of Hugh Edwards, said she saw complainant knocked down twice by Jenny, who beat her on the ground. For the defence, John Smith gf-ve a long, rambling story, m which the only material thing was that he stated complain- struck defendant three times, and Jenny returned the compliment, while the mother tried to get Jenny to go indoors. Other witnesses said that omplaiiiant called the defendant Jenny a bad ame, and laid a charge of immorality against ner. A TREOEKY ASSAULT CASE.—Ruth Davies was summoned for assaulting Eliza Lloyd, at Treorky, on the 29th ult. Mr Rosser defended. The com- plaint was that defendant tftf'usk complainant with a chair. The child was born on the 31st March, 1890. On the 7th July, 1888, she went for a walk with him. Nothing happened that night. They continued walking together during tl • ensuing week, and on the Sunday following the 7th the first act of con- nection .took place. It happened f requently after .J:. 4. .ù wards, and she discovered she was in the family way at the commencement of the following month. She continued to keep company with Curtis from July until the end of November, when she first told him of her condition. In reply he said, If there is anything the matter with you I will stand to my promise and take you." She con- tinued to walk out with him, and saw several persons whilst in his company. He promised to marry her, but afterwards said his father objected. He gave up keeping company with her in the latter end of November. He came twice after- wards to see her. He was annoyed because she would not go down the road after him. She saw him in November, but he would not speak then. The baby was born in Merthyr. It was born before she expected it. After the baby was born she saw the defendant. She taunted him with having denied the paternity of the child, and he said, I don't deny the child." By Mr Simons; I did not arrange to get married to a man named Robert Faulkner. The banns between Faulkner Robert Faulkner. The banns between Faulkner and myself were not published in the Registrar's office at Merthyr. If it was done I knew nothing about it. Faulkner was staying at the same house as myself in Merthyr. Faulkner did not get the lodgings for me at Merthyr. Faulkner used to go back and fore to our house at Blaenrhondda. He did not say in the presence of her mother and other people that he wanted to marry her. Faulkner never asked her to marry him. Did not write a letter home on the 7th March to say that she was married to Faulkner. There was no arrangement with her mother that there should be a bed sent up for Faulkner and herself. I don't know that the bed was sent to the station. My mother did not say at Metthyr that Faulkner having gone drinking, she would take the bed home. Faulkner did not walk out with me when I was big in the family way. I did not tell Faulkner, in the presence of Sarah Jane Parry, that I was in the family way. I told Faulk- ner that in Treorky, because he wanted to walk out witk her. Mr Simons It seems that Faulkner has disappeared, and turned out to be a married man? Witness: I don't know anything about that. William Thomas gave evidence to the effect that he had often seen defendant and complainant together, and that upon one occasion had caught complainant and defendant in the act of having illicit intercourse. Other witnesses were called for complainant, but the evidence in several particulars was contrary to what Mr Matthews had expected, and ultimately the case was dismissed for want of corrobative evidence. A TYNEWYDD CWHW BACH CASE.—Joseph Silly was summoned for selling beer without a. license. P.C. Bryan said: About 12.30 p.m. on the 27th ult. I entered the house of defendant, 7, Zion-st., Tynewydd. Was accompanied by P-S. Harford and others. In the front room I found four men. In another room one man, and a man and defendant upstairo in bed. In the front room I found a jug containing a small quantity of beer and a half pint glass. In the pantry I found a 9 gallon cask nearly empty, and a 4! gallon cask full covered up. I saw defendant's wife. I said, How do you ac- count for these men, and how is it that you have so much beer?" She said, I never did it before and I am very sorry that I've done it now." She began to cry. She was poor and that was the reason she did it. One of the men present said be came there for beer. A fine of £ 10 including oosts was imposed. William Bevad, Stephen Jenkins, William Prosser, John Forster, Samuel Elias, and Henry Williams, were charged with aiding and abetting. Bevan, Jenkins and Rosser only appeared. Each defendant was fined 20s. including costs. VIOLENT ASSAULT AT TREORKY.-—Richard White was summoned for assaulting William Stanka, greengrocer, at Treorky, on the 25th July. Mr Phillips appeared for the complainant ana mr Matthews for the defence. The fracas took place in the passage of the Prince of Wales Inn. The litigants had been playing skittles and it appeared that so ae ill-feeling had been engendered during the progress of the game. The complainant made a statement to the effect that defendant struck him a blow cn the ear, and also hit him violently under the jaw. He also tore his shirt, vest, &nd other portions of his clothing, and for the damage occasioned compensation was olaimed. Mr Matthews intimated to the Bench that his wit- nesses were absent that day. They had attended s, at the last court, but the case was then adjourned. The Stipendiary said he was of opinion the assault had been committed and fined defendant I°8- *"r the. assault and ordered him to pay 10s. damage, the coata and advocate's fee. A TREALAW SQUABBLE.—Jane Williams was summoned for assaulting Alioe Oliver at Trealaw on the 9th jest. Fined 5s

LABOUR NOTES. In his report for the past quarter Mr R. Austin, the general secretary of the A malgamated Society of Engineers, says :The peranal of our financial report for June, 1890, gives us the very encourag- ing and gratifying information that during the past quarter our muster roll has been increased by 1,729 giving us a grand total of members of 64,649 and the balance at our banker's has again reached the magnificent sum of £220,707 9s 2id, These figures should clearly demonstrate to the most sceptical that the pioneers of trade unionismlin the beginning of the present century laid down princi. pies and inculcated truths the measure of which cannot be gauged, and the result of whose laboars so determinedly and modestly began, has resulted in the proud position in which trade unionism stands to-day." He adds, however, that it is most humilating to have to confess that the arrears now stand at the enormous figure of £16,364 19s 4d, and this during a period of good trade unprecedent- ed in the history of the society. The London "Gazette" on Friday night states the Swansea Joinery Company Limited has been wound up, and that Mr R. E. Hughes of Swansea auctioneer, is appointed liquidator. On Friday the men on strike at the Morfa Works, Swansea, assembled on the piece of waste ground opposite to the entrance of the works and the names called over. Mr John Williams, the chairman, introduced John Hoptkin John, who in a stirring speech, complimented them as union men, on the victory that had been gained by the railway men at Cardiff. Passing on to review the Morfa differ- ences, the speaker said that if the management of the Morfa believed that the men were wrong, why not refer the matter to be treated by imperial parties. The men and their leader would, he believ. ed, be willing to do this—(cheers)—believing as they did in the righteousness of their cause.If the. Morfa management refused to do that, then it proved that they had no faith in this coarse, This dispute must at some time be brought to a close Why not at onoe, to save further loss? Why not seek the mediation of some such gentleman as Sir J. J, Jenkins to bring to a close a dispute which, in his opinion, ought never to have taken place ? The programme of the Railway Reform Assooi ation is a remarkable document. The founder or founders aim not at bringing about the State pur. chase of all the railways in Great Britain and Ire- land, but they advocate th,4 construction of a "throughly central railway station" in Londen, whereby all the different lines would be united, the establishment of cheap and uniform fares, and the abolition of contract aud return tickets as well as of excursion trains. In addition to the modest pro- gramme, it is proposed to increase postal facilities by reducing the charge on letters under one ounce to a half-penny, and effecting a simular reduction in parcel post and telegram rates. The attainment of these objects will, it may be predicted, occnpy the promoters of the association for the term of their natural lives, and the publio will require a good deal of education before they can be got to adopt the suggestions put forward in the pro- gramme. At the Silesian village of Roy near Korwin, ex- tensive beds of coal have been discovered (says the Vienna correspondent of the London Daily News). An English company, which had obtain- ed the right of searching for mines, began its opera- tions some months ago, and has now discovered 'I" 'I immense layers of ooal. A mine is estabhahed and the English have engineers already taking measurements and preparing the plant. On Thursday morning the, whole of the men employed at the Cardiff Coke and Washed Coal Works struck work in consequence of the com- pany introducing Belgians on the grounds and giving them preference of work ut the new batch of ovens now in course of erection. The men on strike contend that the preference should be given to the spare hands employed &t the ovens. Mr Forwood, M.P., will visit the dockyards in September to hear the claims of the dockyard men for higher wages. II The Maryport Hematite Iron and Steel Com- pany have discovered at Ellenborough Colliery a virgin field of coal two acres in extent. Cymmer Police Court. I FRIDAY.—Before Mr Morgan (Tynycymmer) Mr T. P. Jenkins, Dr H. W. Davies and D. W. Davies. BREACH OF THE PEACE AT PEXYGRAIG.—James and Thomas Williams were charged with fighting "I on Saturday night.—Kemp was fined 5s and Williams 10s. DnrxE: AND RIOTOUS AT ^CYMMER.—William James was fined 5s for being drunk and challeng- ing to fight on Saturday night the 20th of July.— P.C. Francis proved the charge.—David William Evans for a similar offence on the 4th inst., was also fined 5s. OBSTRUCTING THE FOOTWAY AT PORTII.-A Mrs Lewis was summoned for causing an obstruction at Porth.—P.C. Francis said that on Saturday night the 2nd inst. at 8 p.m. he saw defendant selling "faggots" from a stand near the Porth Hotel corner. The stand was fairly on the pave- ment and partly on the road. It so blocked the footpath that two persons gabreast could not pass on the pavement. Her husband was fined on two occasions for doing the samething. Defendant said that Inspector Jones gave her permission to stand there.— Sergt. Llewellyn stated that In- spector Jones had told him to caution her and if she persisted to report her.- The Inspector being away on a holiday trip the case was adjourned for a fortnight. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF A CAB AT DINAS.—Evan Meredith was charged with being drunk whilst in charge of a cab at Dinas and a companion named Thomas Hurlev was summoned for being drunk on the 27th of July.-The ccwstable (P.C. Weeks) deposed that he saw the defendants drunk, Meredith was knocking at the door of a public house wanting more drink, but the landlord re: fused. Meredith was in charge of a hansomi ) cab.—Fined 15s each. DRUNK AT HAFOD.—John Cliappel was fined 10s for being drunk and creating a disturbance in J Bridge Street, Hafod, on the 3rd inst. UNLICENSED DOG AT HAFOD.—Jenkin Prosser was summoned for keeping a dog without a license. P.C. Thomas said at 4 p.m. on the 1st inst. he saw defendant at the back of his house with a black dog. Upen being asked he replied that he had no license, and that the dog did not belong to him but to Thomas Rees or Evan Rees, White Lion Hotel, Caerphilly. Defendant now produced a license in the namt of Thomas Ree" In reply to the Bench the constable said he had seen the dog with defendant for three months. P.C. Francis stated he knew Thomas Rees kept dogs. He has a black dog named "Trump" which had taken many prizes. It was a greyhound. P.C.Thomas said the one in question was a terrier. The name of the dog on the license was" rrum p." Ad- journed for a fortnight for more evidence. ANOTHER DOG CASE.—John Easton was charged with keeping a dog without a license.—P.C. Thomas said he saw a terrier tied up at the back of defendant's house. Defendant's wife acknow- ledged they had no license. Saw defendant next day who said he had had the dog only a fortnfght and that it was not six months old. In reply to the Magistrates defendant said the flog was six months on 2nd inst. He brought it from Cardiff for a friend living at Hopkinstown, and the reason he kept it at his house for eight days was because his friend was at the seaside. The Magistrates said they would adjourn the case for the pro- duction of the friend. Defendant said he would rather have it settled at once. The chairman "No it would be a pity you should have to pay a fine if what you say is true." Defendant preferrec1 having it settled at once and was fined 18s in- cluding price of a license. ASSAULT AT POHTH.-Ann Owen was charged with assaulting Catherine Bevan, on Wednesday the 30th of July. Complainant said sh6 wus sweeping the pavement before her mother's house when defendant coming up beat her and dragged her by the air. She cried out which brought her mother to the rescue. John David gave corrobora- tive evidence. The defence was that complain- ant had struck defendant's little sister, and that it was only a push. Fined 5s. MATRIMONIAL SQUABBLES AT CYMMER. — John Griffiths was charged with assaulting his wife Catherine. The wife was anxious to withdraw the charge, although it;was drawn from her that defendant had frequently beaten her. Sanction to withdraw was given. THREATS AT YNYSHIR.—Thomas Tompkins was charged with using threats towards Susannah Jones. Complainant said the defendant had long wanted her to keep company and she did not want to have anything to do with him. He had re- peated a foul charge against her and she denied it. Because of that defendant threatened to knock her "blooming" head off, and used other threats when- ever he saw her so that she was afraid of him. Bound over in- Y.5 to keep the peace for six months and to pay the costs 12s 6d. ALLEGED ASSAULT AT GILFACH GOCH.—Thomas Nicholas was charged with assaulting William Bowen. Complainant said last Sunday night on going out of his house he heard defendant's wife and two other women talking about him, and asked them what it was about. One called him a b-- thief, and another called him a b-liar, Defendant coming up at the time said he had never known for 25 years a greater blackguard than he (complainant) was,and threatened to beat him, so that he was afraid of him. Witnesses for defence put a different colour on the matter tend- ing to show that complainant had threatened first. Dismissed. ASSAULTING & P.C. AT TREHERBERT.—Martin Jones was charged with assaulting A.S. Hurford. The constable said at twenty minutes p%st nine the previous night he was called to the house of Mrs Evans, Baglan street who complained that defendant had been threatening her saying he would do for her and her daughter before the night was over. She showed him two large stones used by defendant at the back door which was dented. Asked him what he meant by so acting. Defendant said "You b- rodney what have you got to do with it you have no business to interfere." Defendant made an attempt to strike but he pushed him back against the wall. Spring- ing forward defendant struck him a severe blow in the mouth knocking him backwards and cutt- ing his lip inside so that his mouth was filled with blood. Three or four men came to the rescue. Inspector Rutter said he found both in the police station. The constable's mouth was full of blood and his lip swollen. Prisoner said he was very sorrv he struck the constable. Fined 40s. ALLEGED THEFT OF CLOTH AT DINAs,-David Harris was charged with stealing a piece of cloth value 4s the property of Matthew Howells, Porth. Prosecutor, a butcher, said on the 10th of July, he was returning from Treorky, and at Dinas met Frank Meredith, an old friend whom he had not seen for years. They went together to the Graig Ddu public-house, and Meredith being "hard up," asked him to buy a piece of cloth which he did. Pay 2s for it. On leaving the inn he forgot the cloth which was on the settle. Prisoner was there and saw him .buy tbe cloth. A woman *eve ew- ence that she bought the cloth produced of prisoner for 4s 3d; and that he saw he wanted to go away but was hard up through an accident. Frank Meredith, haulier, proved selling the cloth to prosecutor. P.O. Weeks arrested prisoner on Tuesday night. Defendant said he lodged with Meredith who asked him to try and sell the cloth. He did not see the cloth soli to prosecutor, but finding it there took it and sold it for 4s. He afterwards gave Meredith 2s as the agreement was they were to share whatever the cloth fetched. Meredith recalled acknowledged that prisoner did give him 2s but did not say what it was for and I and he did not know it was for the cloth.. The Bench immediately dismissed- the case.

MOUNTAIN ASH LOCAL BOARD. A meeting of the local board, presided over by the chairman (Mr Morgan Morgan) was held on Monday. The tender (£2,290) of Mr Thomas Taylor, Pontypridd, for sewage work at Ynysybwl was accepted. It was decided that the board should call in some person to lay out and design the proposed mode of dealing with the sewage of Aberdare Junction, and the terms of Mr William Fox, late assistant of Mr Bateman, be asked for. The clerk was instructed to write to the Great Western Railway Company, and ask them to reply to the boarcl's letter with reference to the bridge at Penrhiwceiber and also to write to Mr Codrington and ask him to name a time and place to meet the surveyor of the board with the plans of the Penrhiwceiber road. The clerk was further instructed to ask Mr Miles Edmunds to sign the contract for the erection of the infectious diseases hospital. The Medical Officer reported 18 fresh cases of scarlet fever and two cases of diphtheria due to bad drainage. The plan of a new bridge at Aberdare Junction was approved, and copies of the same were sent to the owners of the sewage committee farm and the Taff Vale Railway Company with a request for their approval and assistance by granting land free of charge.

Pontypridd County Court Before His Honour Judge Gwilym Williams. A CONSIDERATE JUDGE. On Judge Gwilym Williams taking his seat on Thursday, his Honour stated that he felt a difficulty in dealing with judgment summonses under the peculiar circumstances existing in the district. There were many persons summoned before him that day who, no doubt, were affected by the strike. It was impossible to say how long it would last, and as he thought it affected the great majority of the persons named in that day's list, he did not feel justified in making orders of commitment. He therefore wished to impress upon plaintiffs the necessity of withdrawing their cases for the present. His Honour added that it seemed to him the prpper course for him to pursue on the present occasion was to adjourn all the judgment summonses to a special court to be held on the 20th October. If he proceeded with cases that day, certificates would show that the men were earning good wages on the dates of such certificates, but the month's wages referred to in the certificates would be all the money the men would have for the current month's expenses. He could not under these oircumstances say that they are now in a position to pay the orders made against them, as the last month's earnings must go to pay for the current month's maintenance, and he thought it was in the interest of all parties that the whole ofthe judgment summonses in that day's list should be adjourned, and plaintiff's and defendants would note that the cases will then be taken without any fresh service of the sum- monses. EMPLOYERS LIABILITY ACT. IMPORTANT ACTION.-GRIFFITHS V. NIXON'S NAVIGATION COMPANY (LIMITED) MOUNTAIN ASH. This was an action brought in the Aberdare County-court by Samuel Griffiths, a sinker, resid- ing at Ystradmynach. against the defendants to recover a sum of JE209 for compensation for in- juries sustained by him in consequence of the alleged negligence of the defendants or persons in their employ. It was arranged between the parties that the action should be heard at Pontypridd, and the matter accordingly came before his Honour on Saturday last. Mr Rhys (Messrs Morgan amd Rhys) appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Arthur Lewis (instructed by Mr Charles Kenshole, Aber- dare) appeared for the defendants. From the plaintiff's evidence and that of his witnesses it. appeared that he was engaged in sinking at the Cwm-Cynon Pit, Penrhiwceiber, on the 15th of February last, when certain drills were allowed to fall down the shaft, upon the I — — "» plaintiff, whereby he sustained a compound fracture of the arm and the fracture of one of his ribs, and it was contended on his behalf that the plant used at the pit was defective, inasmuch as the sides of the trolly were not boarded, and that it did not run up flush with the side li i the result being that the drills when being handed bv the labourer fell down between the fence and the side of the trolly and then rebounded between the wheels of the trolly and fell down the shaft. For the defendants it was contended that the accident arose in consequence of the negligence of the banksman and labourer at the pit top in leap- ing the drills into the trolly, and that, inasmuch as they were fellow workmen with the plaintiff the defendants were not liable. E vidence was also given by Messrs Thomas « i -Lewis' and Thomas Jenkins to the enect that the trolly was one in general use for sinking purposes. His Honour, after hearing the evidence and ex- amining a model of the appliances used, came to the conclusion that the plant was not defective, and that the company were not responsible for the negligence of the men engaged at tte pit top, and tnerefore, gave judgment for defend- ants. °

END OF THE GREAT RAILWAY- MEN'S STRIKE. The Strike of the Railway men ended on Thurs- se nni^rht. Mr Inskip. empowered by the joint committee of directors of the Bute, Taff, Rhymney and Barry Companies, and Mr T. Harford, em- powered by the railway men on strike, met on Thursday afternoon, and in less than aa hour and a half settled all their differences. The directors in five minutes confirmed what Mr Inskip had done, an-1, the terms agreed upon were equally as well received on the part of the employes. It will be seen from those terms that there have been* mutual conoessions,!and for this reascn the peace which was proclaimed on' Tatrsctay night is likely to be the more lasting. One pleasant feature in the proceedings was that Mr Inskip himself at- -ended the meeting, and not only read the memo- randum which had been drawn up by himself on behalf of the directors and Mr Harford on the part of the men, but dealt with the whole question in suefi a manner as must havereiiioved from the hearts of all present any irritation that mty have been caused during the well-fought but brief battle By his generous action and conciliatory spirit Mr Inskip has' won back the sympathies of the em- ployes. The strike has upset the whole traffic of the district, and though colliers are ready to work and railwaymen to carry the black diamonds to port, some considerably time must elap3e before we can return to the normal condition cf things; During the last three weeks very f-w vessels have been chartered for Cardiff, and fears are entertain. ed that threatened disputes with the dockers may induce shipowners to give a wide berth to Cardiff. It is necessary that a thorough understanding be arrived at with regard to th. dockers before con- fidence will be restorsd. 'J raffic on the South Wales railways was resumed on Friday morning, and the district collieries also re-commenced work. During the afternoon some uneasiness was caused owing co a question concern- ing the interpretation of all the terms of agree- ment between the railway directorate and their employes. The matter affects signalmen. Tke officials of the Vale Railway hold by the agree- ment that these servants are to mlke a week's work of 84 hours, with 12 hours off. To this the men demur, maintaining that if this were so their position would be worse than it was before the strike. Their interpretation is that the week is to be one of 72 hours with the 12 off. For the convience of our reandrs we give in parallel columns the men's original demands and the terms of the settlement:- ORIGINAL DEMANDS. 1. That the maxi- mum hours of duty be ten per day, but for shunters in busy yards and for signalmen at important boxes the maximum to be eight hourB per day. 2. That each day's duty stand by itself, and that overtime be not counted as a part of the week's ordinary labour. 3. That a week's pay be guaranteed. 4. that overtime be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter, and that men should not again be called on duty until nine clear hours have elapsed pince leav- ing dutl 5 That Sunday duty be paid for at the rate of time and a half, the period during which duty shall count to oommenoe at midnight on Saturday, and con- tinue till midnight on Sunday. I SETTLED TERMS. 1. The railvay com- panies to pay at least a week's work of 60 hours in the same way as formerly done on the Taff Vale Railway, subject to the co edition that the men will not be paid for the time lost through the monthly holiday at the collieries or through strikes or other unusual interrup- tions of labour and undertakings connect- ed with the railways. The ordinary holidays at Easter, Whitsuntide, and Christmas to be treated as heretofore on the Taff Vale Rail- way. 2. The piloting and shunting day to be eleven hours, but six per week to be allowed off for each man, and the allowance for meals to be cancelled, S. The time for signalmen to be twelve hours per day, but twelve hours in each week of seven days are to be allowed off. 4. The men of each company will resume tbeir work in order of seniority as the traffic can be restored. The men who have gone out will not on returning to WOI k be placed at a disadvantage, and they are not to interfere with men who have not gone out. 5. These terms are supplemental to tie regulations previously issued by the companies and do not take away the privileges conceded before the strike as to overtime and other matters, except as far as herein before ex- pressed. Aliened Pollution of the Blaen- I Rboiidda Water Supply POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS AT YSTRAD. THE CASE ADJOURNED. At the Ystrad police court on Monday, the Ystrad Water Company were summoned for hav- ing supplied polluted water for domestic purposes to the inhabitants of their water district. Mr Rhys appeared to prosecute and Mr Arthur James (Merthyr) represented the district. Mr James applied for an adjournment of the case. Mr Rhys objected to an adjourrment. Mr James: I wrote to Messrs Morgan and Rhys asking them to consent to an adjournment. The summons was not served until Friday last and I accepted service to avoid inconvenience. I saw from the newspapers that the Board in- tended to support the prosecution Viud that was the first time that we knew what we were to be summoned for. Mr Rhys I strongly oppose this application. There has been a long correspondence between Mr James and myself. Mr James The correspondence took place between the Clerk to the Ystrad Local Board and the secretary of the Companv. Mr Rhys My friend appeared before the Board on Friday week when this matter was discussed up and down. Mr James asked the Board to withdraw the summons. Mr James I did nothing of the kind, I asked them whether thev would proceed under certain circumstances. r don't think what Mr Rhys has sa.id has anything to do with the case. There is such an amount of local prejudice in this case that I think Mr Rhys ought to allowed us to be pre- pared. The Stipendiary Are you prepared to go into the case to-day Mr James, Mr James No I have no witnesses here. Mr Rhys Then I must ask you to hear the case exparte. This matter has been going on for a long time. They undertook the last time that they would not repeat the offence. The defence is the same upon this occasion as on the last. They have no defence.. Ms James We promised nothing. Mr Rhys The proceedings are for the same thing exactly, the sheep washing. Mr James You need not go into the case. Mr Rhys I am not going into the cace. Mr James My friend is giving evidence. Mr Rhys I am not. I only produce the clipp- ings sheep found in the water. It is a dis- graceful thing. Dr James made a remark to the effect that the condition of the water would operate seriously in the event of cholera or typhoid fever breaking out. Mr James (to the Bench) Will you say whether you will now adjourn the case or not.I can do nothing. Mr Rhys I refused on Saturday to an ad- journment and I still refuse. Mr James The summons issued on the 5th was not served until the 16th. We want to ap- pear by Counsel. Mr Rhys Why appear by Counsel? I don't see why I should be put to any inconvenience for counsel or your witnesses. Mr James It is an utter want of courtesy. I never Heard of such a thing. The case not being reached at the rising of the 11 1 court it was adjourned until the next court.
