Mr. Williams, local "Wei-tfrn Mail" representative, read a letter from Mr. Bezzant, representative of the News of the World," who regretted his inability to attend. HOCKEY.—On Good Friday, at the Merthyr Olympia Rink, a very interesting hockey match was played between the rink stall and the Amateur Kockey Team. The rink staff in- cluded F. 1(. Lev era 11, who has played for America three times; A. Johns, the Lancashire Champion; andProiessor Cray, ford, expert exhibition skater. The rink staff floored as follows Goal keeper, Miss V/ilkes; half-back, Arnold Bailey forwards, F. K. Deverall (capt)., A. Johns, and Prof. Crawford. The Amateur Hockey Team was represented by :—goal- keeper, G. V. Jenkins half-back, H. Taylor forwards, Jas. Hay word (capt.), A. Hughes and P. Horsefield. Referee, A. Gibncy. Specu- ations regarding the issue of this match were decidedly in favour of the staff team, and the spectators fully anticipated defeat for the Amateurs. The' teams bullied off at 8.30 p-m and after five minutes' play the came was carried into the Staff territory, where, due to the fine combination of the Amateur forwards, fine goal resulted. For the next few minutes the game was confined to the floor centre, where a great struggle took place to gain posses- sion of the ball, which again the Amateurs succeeded in doing from a fine pass from Hughes, Hayword succeeding in beating the opposing goal-keeper with a line oblique shot from which another goal resulted. The referree then called half-time. On resumption of play the game was again kept to the centre of the floor, until Johns broke away with a clever dribble, and was within an ace of scoring, but for the keen defence of Taylor, who, after having taken the ball away from Johns, smartly passed to Horse- field, who eleverjy beat his man and dribbled up to within ten yards of the opponent's goal then centered to Hayword, who added another goal. After a few more minutes' play the game- ended, the final score being Amateur Hockey Team, 3 goals; Rink Staff, nil; the 3 goals being scored by Hayword. On Tuesday after- noon next, at the Ladies' Te"m will play tho Mumbles Pier Rink Ladies' Team, at Merthyr Rink, when a great game is promised, as both teams are great exponents of ririk hockey, and playing in great form. CONCERT AT CYFARTHFA CASTLE.—A Success- ful concert was given on Wednesday evening last in connection with the art exhibition, by the Cyfarthfa and Merthyr Municipal Band, under the' conductorship of Mr. J. J. Harvey (late bandmaster 7th Hussars). In the un- avoidable absence of his Worship the Mayor, the chair was occupied by Alderman D. W. Jones (Chairman of the Parks Committee). A splendid programme of music was rendered, in which the band was ably assisted by the follow- ing artistes :—Soprano, Miss S. Trevor Davies, Merthyr; bass, Mr. John Haman, Merthyr: elocutionist, Miss Joan Lewis, Merthyr; quar- tette, Messrs. W. J. Thomas and 0. Morgan, Dowlais, and Misses S. Trevor Davies, Merthyr. and Annie Williams, Dowlais; Master Horatio Davies, a very promisiong young Dowlais musician, atced as accompanist. This being the first public, appearance of the band since its re-organisation, it was very gratifying to the promoters to find that it was capable of giving such a finished performance, and it speaks very highly of the ability of the conductor (Mr. J. J. Harvey) whose life-long connection with military ( bands, and particularly his connection with the band of that crack cavalry corps, the 7th Hussars, eminently fits him to revive the glory of the Cyfarthfa band, whose unique instru- mentation was always its predominating feature and placed it in the van of all other brass bands in the country. The programme was as follows Overture, La Rose de Peronne" (Adolphe Adam), the Band song. Japanese Love Song" (Clayton Thomas), Miss S.
