P.C.'s SUCCESS.—P.C. Idris Davies, of the borough poiice force, has passed the Board of Trade examination for weights and measures. The question of his promotion to a higher grade will be considered at the next meeting of the Watch Committee. INQUEST.—An inquest on the body of John Thomas, of Nantygwenlth-street, Merthyr, found in the canal at Troedyrhiw, on the pre-, vious Wednesday morning, was held on Friday, before Mr. R. J. Rhys, coroner. The facts of the cass were reported last week. Thomas was formerly a sergeant in the Manchester police force, and had retired on a pension. For some time past he was a lodge-keeper at Cyfarthfa, but the lodge was closed. The deceased had been on the lookout for light work. On Wednes- day morning he left the house at 5.30, and later his body was discovered as stated. The jury returned a verdict of Found drowned." MRS. PRICE, 14, Castle-street, Merthyr Tydfil, writing on the 27th March, 1910, says We have been using Dr. Tibbies' Vi-Cocoa for fourteen years and find it splendid. WELSH LABOUR EXCHANGES.—Mr. KeirHardie asked the President of the Board of Trade, on Tuesday whether any decision had yet been come to on the question of establishing a central labour exchange for the mining areas of South Wales. Mr. Sydney Buxton said I have con- sidered the matter, and I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by establishing I a separate central labour exchange for the mining industry, but in the raining, districts where the exchanges, such as those at Merthyr and Pontypridd, may deal largely with miners, I am considering the possibility of setting aside a speciaJ registration room for miners. MUSICAL SUCCESS.—At the recent examin- ation, held at Cardiff, in connection with the London College of Music, Mr. T. W. Jones, 5, Farm-terrace, Heolgerrig, passed success- fully in pianoforte playing. He is a pupil of Mr. W. J. Edmunds, F.T.S.C., Penvdarreii.; "JUDAS MACCABÆus,On Thusday next, April 21st, at the Drill Rail, Mert-hyr. there wiil be a performance of one of Handel's' most popular works, "Judas Maccabseus," bv the Park Choral Society, under the baton of the veteran conductor, Mr. Dan Davies. Eminent artistes have.. been booked. The( ^oprano is Miss May John, R.A.M., of Cardiff,- who* is one of Mcrthyr's favourites. Madame ClyyS Ham- ,bly Spry,- although unknown to Merthyr [' audiences, is a. vei-y fine contralto, a,nd was a i winner at the London Eisteddfod. Mr. Todd .Jones, who is always very popular, has a very fine tenor voice while Mr. R. H. Humphreys, R.A.M.,is one of the most popular baritones in1 North Wales. No expense has been spared in engaging a first-class ore iiestra, which will lie under the leadership of Mr. Angle. The past record of the choir is a sufficient, guarantee that there is a great treat in store for all music lovers. The-singing is already of a very high order, and it will be advisable to be in early attendance to secure good scats, as the tickets have sold well, and a. crowded hall is expected. SUICIDE AT SWANSEA-ROAD.—On Friday i morning Ann Lewis, a widow, aged 61, living with her son and daughter, at 16, Oellideg, SwanRea-road, committed suicide by hanging. The deceased had for some time suffered from sleeplessness and had a weak heart. On Friday morning she rose early and got breakfast for her son, prior to his going to work. She went back to bed about 6 o'clock, telling her daughter to call her at eight o'clock. At that hour the daughter did as requested, but getting no reply she went to the bedroom and found her mother suspended from a beam by a Sandow developer round her neck, and she was apparently quite dead. At the inquest, on Saturday, the coroner, addressing a witness who ran to Heolgerrig to fetch P. C. Stephens, prior to the body being cut down, ridiculed the notion entertained by .7 many people that a body should not be cut down before the arrival of the police. Prompt action, he said, often meant the saving of life. It was stated that, the Sandow developer was 'used by the deceased's son. The jury returned a verdict of Suicide whilst tecaporariJy insane." 'I -SociAL TEA.-A social tea was held in con- nection with St. Tydfil's Well Church Debating Society, on Thursday evening last, when the lady-members provided the necessary pro- visions. Mr. Thomas (Cyfarthfa Castle), in a very appropriate speech, pointed to the good resulting from debating classes for the cultivation of knowledge and the bringing out of young men in speaking. Mr. Taylor also spoke. Miss H. A, Davies sang Tit for tat." which was received .with loud r,ppla,use. Mr. Lee, as Bill Sykes, the artful dodger," also delighted the company. Mr. Jenkins sang Good Spirit," and Mr. Fred Lewis recited. Mr. Hill, who sang On Board the liingaroo.' was encored. Mr. Rice and Mr. Robert Jones spoke, after which Mr. Thomas proposed a vote of thanks to the secretary, which was seconded bv Mr. Lee and carried. Mr. Roger Williams (the patriarch of St. Tydfil's Roger Williams (the patriarch of St. Tydfil's Well Church) proposed a vote of thanks to the president, to whom, lie said, they, were all greatly indebted for starting the class. This was seconded by Mr. W. J. James and carried with loud applause.

PARISH CHURCH.—On Tuesday a quarter-peal of grand&ire triples was rung by the following members :—W. Morgan 1, W. Allen 2, W. Roberts 2, F Chave 4, F. Stedman 5, E. Thomas n. A. E. Slatter (conductor) 7, and J Smith 8. The peal was rung with the. bells half muffled, as a tribute of respect to the late Air. James Gray, who had been a faithful member of the band since the erection of the peal of bells 'in 1906. STEAM RpLLER OVERTURNS.—On Tuesday the ten-ton steam roller, the property of the Corporation, turned a completo somersault whilst at work between Troedyrhiw and Merthyr Vale, and the driver, Robert John Roberts, had a miraculous escape. Tho engine was working on the main road, on one side of which there is a big dip overlooking the sewerage farms. It seems that a. portion of the road gave way, and without a moment's warning the roller slid over the bank into the field below, turning completely over, and, singu- larly enough, alighting upon its fret." The driver, with great presence of mind, jumped off, and escaped with a severe shaking. So far as can be ascertained no serious injury was done to the roller. PHRENOLOGY.—On Monday last, at the Spiritual Temple, Tramroadside North, Mr. J. T. Docton delivered the first of a series of lectures on phrenology to an appreciative audience. The subject was How to read, character," which was dealt with in a very lucid and able manner, thus showing that the lecturer must have given very careful and earnest investigation to the subject. Numerous illustrations were introduced, showing the different traits of character depicted in the shape of the head, facial expression and general contour of the individual. At the close of the lecture members from the audience were invited to the platform to be phrenologieally examined, several persons accepting the invitation. The public examination gave great satisfaction. CHEAP CERTIFICATES OF BIRTH.—Mr. Edgar Jones, the Liberal member for Merthyr, asked the President of the Local Government Hoard, on Wednesday, whether he could arrange so that'children in elementary schools who are candidates for entrance scholarships of secondary schools might obtain the eheap certificates of birth under the Elementary Education Acts, and whether he could prevent registrars from demanding, as they do at present, a fee of 3s. 0d.—Mr. Burns The statutory provisions on this subject refer to elementary education, and consequently legislation would be necessary to secure the object which my hon. friend has in view. The fees at present paid to registrars are fixed by statute. CILSANWS GOLF CLTTB.—The monthly meeting of this club was held at the Bush Hotel, Merthyr, on Friday last. Mr. Welland, the pro." reported that seven greens had been laid, and before Whitsun three additional natural greens would be playable. Members who have played over the course expressed themselves as very pleased with it, and increased play will bring the turf if to still better condition. The follow- ing matters were discussed :—The desirability or otherwise of having a formal opening of the course, the laying out of the ground attached to the golf-house, and the providing of refresh- ments for members and also lockers for their use at the golf-house. The treasurer (Mr. T. Gilbert Evans) submitted a balance sheet showing a smaller expenditure than was antici- pated, and the average cost per green conse- quently worked out at a. low figure. It is requested that intending members shall send in their applications for membership, with subscriptions (ladies, 15f! gentlemen, £1 10s.) within the next three weeks, to the Secretary, Gwynfa," The Walk, Merthyr. BETHESDA.—On Sunday the quarterly meet- ing of the Sunday School, in connection with Bethesda. Chapel, was held. A programme had been arranged by Messrs. Williams and Joseph Davies. The chairmen were the Rev. J. Jones (pastor), and Mr. Daniel Davies, superintendent of the school.
