TALSARN. I OBITUARY.—One of the oldest inhabitants of tha Vale of Aeron, Mr Thomas Jones, Dolfridi, has passed away. The interment took place in the Parish Churchyard of Llanfihangel Ystrad under the new Burials Act. The funeral sermon was preached in the house by the Rev B. Carolan Davies, Ty'nygwndwn. The following ministers also took part The Revs — Phillips, Temple Bar — Parry, Cilcennin Gwilym Evans, Aberayron and John Evans, Abermeurig. Amongst those present were the Revs Jones, B.A., Pwllheli Edwards, Neath Williams, Rhydvgwin and Morgans, the vicar. Mr Thomas Jones was the last survivor of a family of thirteen children. He was a veteran full of peculiarities and eccentri- cities, but was beloved and respected by all.

TREGARON. WEDDING.—The marriage of Miss Maggie Morgan, eldest daughter of Mrs Morgan of the Talbot Hotel, and Mr Stephen Jones, 42, Warwick- street, Belgrave-road, London, was solemnised on Wednesday of last week. The bride, who is a native of Tregaron, is well known throughout the district and her genial, pleasant, and social manners have endeared her to all who know her. The bridegroom, up to a few years ago, was an assist- ant chemist at Mr Jones's, the Post Office, and is now in business in London. He is a native of Swyddffynon and, though not so well known at Tregaron as the bride is, during the time he was at Tregaron he was a great favourite amongst those who came in con- tact with him. At the time fixed for the wedding, large crowds of people thronged the streets to see the party going to the chapel and flags and banners were largely displayed and the event celebrated by gun-firing and other forms of marriage rejoicing. The chapel was tastefully decorated for the occasion and when the party arrived it was soon filled. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Morgan Evans, in the presence of Mr Peter Williams, the registrar. Mr William Jones, 35, Askelon-street, Battersea, brother to the bridegroom, acted as best man. The bridesmaids were the Misses Nancy and Cassie Morgan, sisters of the bride, with Miss Eleanor Jones, the Post Office. Miss Foulkes of the Intermediate School played the Wedding March. The bride was charmingly attired in ivory white silk-trimmed chiffon and orange blossoms with tulle veil and a bouquet of lilies of the valleys and roses, with trail. The bridesmaids also were prettily dressed in spotted muslin over mauve silk, with hats to match of white chiffon and feathers. They wore brooches of heart-shaped amthyst stones set in gold which, with the bouquets of chrysanthemums and roses, were the gifts of the bridegroom. The bride was given away by her uncle, Mr J. D. Rowland of Cardiff. After the ceremony at the chapel, the bride's mother held a reception at the Talbot Hotel, the Assembly Room of which had been profusely decorated for the occasion with flags, evergreen, and mottoes. Appropriate speeches were made by Mr J. D. Rowland, the Rev Morgan Evans, Mr Tom Jones (Post Office), and Mr Morgan Morgans. On the toast to the Bride and bridegroom," the bride- groom suitably responded and Mr Dan Jones after- wards gave an excellent rendering of True till Death." In. the evening, at the same place, a large number of guests were entertained when various kinds of amusements were indulged in till a late hour. The happy couple left by the afternoon train for Cardiff en route for Ilfracombe to spend their honeymoon, accompanied by the good wishes of all. The bride's travelling dress was a royal blue costume with velvet picture hat trimmed feathers. Gwer- class, which sad event took place sudden, and at the very time when at the last meeting they were pass- ing a vote of condolence with the Master and his family, on which as all would remember Mr Williams (Gwerclas) spoke so feelingly and sympathetically. He was sure all were anxious to pass a vote of con- dolence with Mr Williams and his family. He pro- posed that.—The motion was seconded by Mr R. R Roberts, and supported by Mr E. O. V. Poor Law Legislation in 1898. —A circular letter was read from the Local Government Board draw- ing attention to the Poor Law (Scotland) Act, 1898, and the Poor Law Unions Association (Expenses) Act, 1898, passed during the last session of Parlia- ment. DisenfranchUemmt- of Members of Friendly Societie,s.-The following resolution passed by the Wolverhampton Board of Guardians was, upon the motion of the Rev Ivan T. Davies, seconded by Mr W. A. Jones, adopted by this Board:—" That this Board is of opinion that all recipients of out relief belonging to a friendly society should not be dis- enfranchised and calls upon all other boards of guardians to pass a similar resolution with the view of petitioning Parliament to so alter the law that the above may be carried out." Fulura Management of the Work-house. -Owing to the death of Mrs Williams, the matron, the question of the future management of the House was taken under consideration.—Upon the motion of Rev Ivan T. Davies, seconded by Mr J. Nanson, Miss Williams was appointed to act temporarily as matron.—It was also resolved, upon the motion of Mr R. R. Roberts, seconded by the Rev J. S. Jones, that the question of the future management of the Work- house be referred to the Workhouse Visiting Com- mittee. R. Roberts, seconded by Mr Godfrey Parry, it was resolved that at the next meeting a committee be appointed to ascertain how the dis- posal of sewage by the septic system works. Instructions as to Provisional Orders. -A circular letter was read from the Local Government Board enclosing instructions as to applications for provis- ional orders. The letter was ordered to be laid on the table. Ddol Road and the Proposed New Bridge over the De.-The following report from the County Council was read :—"The sub-Committee appointed to enquire into the application submitted by the Edeyruion Rural District Council with reference to the proposed new bridge over the river Dee at Cor- wen having submitted the following report, namely (a) that in the event of the projected new bridge over the river Dee being erected, the Ddol road, Corwen, be not declared a main road; (b), that the County Council do not undertake to make all proper approaches to such new bridge, but that the Council contribute the Water S,upply.-The Inspector was directed to make a general inspection of the district and sub- mit at the next meeting a list of all the houses which he may consider not having ample and pure supply of water at a reasonable distance from tnem. Almshouses, Corwen.—The Clerk was.directe to give a notice to the Trustees requesting tnem to close the almshouses at Corwen, as being un lor human habitation.. Hafod Footbridge. —A communication was re- ceived from the Hon. C. H. Wynn, R0g, 8^fcin« ^at he intended rebuilding the footbridge by Hafod, but should the Council desire to have a more substantial bridge made there forjthe use of the public, he would abandon his bridge and contribute the amount he proposed spending on his bridge towards the Council 8 bridge. A committee consisting of Messrs R. E. Jones, W. E. Williams, and Rev Ivan T. Davies, were appointed to enquire into the matter and to report to the next meeting.

llanbadahn FAWR. SCHOOL BOARD. -A meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday evening when there were pre- sent Messrs H. E. Bonsall. M. D. Williams, and Miss E. Davies, and Mr H. G. Atwood, clerk.—The Board passed a vote of condolence with Mrs Clarke, Trevor-road, in the death of her husband. A letter was read from Mr Samuel Evans, clerk to the Aber- ystwyth Intermediate School, announcing the suc- cess of two pupils from the school, Mr Hubert E. Jones and Miss Margaret J. Keane, in the scholar- ship examination. The scholarships, which are of the value of L5 each, are tenable for one year.

ABERDOVEY SHIPPING —The steamer Esteria arrived here with cement on Friday and left on Monday after discharging a cargo of cement for the Rhayader Waterworks. The steamer "Telephone arrived from Liverpool on Sunday with a mixed Cargo and left for Barmouth on Monday. SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIOlf. —T he election is carried on in this place in a quiet manner. It is impossible to foretell the result as the voters are spread over a largedistrict including Pennal, Aberdovey, Towyn, and Bryncrug. The Liberals here have two good candidates in the Rev J. O. Thomas and Mr E. L. Rowlands. The polling takes place on Friday (to day). GOLFING.-As a result of the visit of the Welsh Golfing Union to this place, a large number of new members have joined the mechanic and tradesmen's branch of the Aberdovey Golf Club, including two district councillors, Mr E L. Rowlands, chairman of the Council, and Mr W. Jones Hughes, ex-chair- man. A match was played last Saturday between the mechanics and the caddies when the latter won by six holes up. Major Green, president of the Club, is leaving Aberdovey to the great regret of the members and inhabitants generally. OBITUARY.—Another of the old inhabitants of this town passed away on Sunday, when Mrs Laura Hughes, widow of Mr W. The funeral took place on Wednes- day afternoon, when the remains were taken to | Llanegryn and buried in the Churchyard. There was a large attendance of relations and neighbours, the funeral cortege consisting of the hearse containing the body and fifteen vehicles. The chief mourners present were Mrs Owen, Eglwysfach (daughter), and Mr Owen, Capt J Rowland Evans (son), Mr W. Jones Hughes, D.C. (son), and Mrs Hughes, Mrs Davies, Liverpool (sister), Mrs Daviee, Wrexham (niece). &c. The service at the house was conducted by the Rev J. 0. Thomas, M.A., and in the Church and at the grave by the Rev D. Hughes, vicar of Llanegryn. Tea was provided for all at Cefncoch Inn after the service. Wreaths were placed on the coffin by the children, nieces, and Misa Morgan, Cliff Side.

The Commission summoned to examine the dossier in the Dreyfus case and report whether there is any ground for a revision of the trial met in Pans on Wednesday. It is expected that they will conclude their task in time to allow M. oarrien, the minister of justice, to report their decision to the meeting of the Cabinet next Mon- day. The Correctional Tribunal on Wednesday commenced the hearing of the charges against Colonel Picquart and M. Leblois, who lare alleged to have revealed documents concerning the national defences. The representative of the Public Pro- secutor asked for and obtained an adjournment of the proceedings on the ground that General Zurlinden had demanded the institution of fresh proceedings against Colonel Picquart in connection with the documents known as the petit bleu. AGRICULURAL EDUCATION IN WALES. The departmental report just issued, shows that grants of JE800 each are made to the University Colleges. of Aberystwyth and Bangor, and that Bangor College gets an additional grant of 9200 for the college farm. Dealing with the work done at Aberystwyth, the Inspector of the Board of Agriculture calls especial attention to the experimental garden of three- quarters of an acre, from which it may be possible to show by ocular demonstration what is the actual regular appearance of any particular farm crop when grown under certain known manurial con- ditions. From this it may be but a step for a per. son by studying the appearance of the crops on any particular field, to form a very fair opinion as to what are its manurial requirements. Some plots are treated as if they were miniature fields and taking the wheat crop for example, experiments are in progress showing the effect of sowing large grain or small grain, thick seeding as opposed to thin seeding, one variety obtained straight from England compared with the same after it has been grown for two years in Wales, and so on. Of the thirty-nine elementary students, five came with county scholarships from Staffordshire and the re- mainder with county scholarships from Welsh counties. Field demonstrations were conducted at twenty-five centres, including five in Merioneth- shire and five in Montgomeryshire. Lectures on general agricultural subjects were given at four centres in Montgomeryshire, where the audiences averaged seventy-three. The expenditure for the year was £ 2,300, to which six county Councils con- tributed £1,030, and fees and miscellaneous receipts produced JE330, while the scholarships awarded by county councils amounted to JE645. Of Bangor College, the Inspector says the normal work has proceeded without much material change. The principal point of interest in connection with the work during the year has been the acquisition by the College of a farm which will supply a long- felt want in the scheme of agricultural education provided for North Wales. The dairy school at Lleweni Hall, Denbigh, was open for nine months of the year and seventy-five pupils attended and all but seven stopped for the normal course of six weeks and many remained for two or three months Travelling dairy schools visited all the counties in the district of the College. In Denbighshire, courses wpre held at four centres and were attended throughout the full length of each course by forty-four pupils. At one of these centres a cheese as well as butter class was held. This form of instruction shows signs of increase and a demand is springing up for it not only in reipect of Cheshire cheese, but also of Cheddar, Stilton, and soft cheese. In Flintshire classes (including, at one centre, instruction in cheesemaking) were held at three centres and forty-two out of a total of forty-three pupils received the full course of ten days' teaching. In Montgomeryshire provision was made for butter- making instruction at four centres. There was a total attendance of forty-two pupils, only five fail- ing to take the full course. Field demonstrations had been carried out at twenty-six centres, including one centre in Denbighshire, six centres in Flintshire, and two in Montgomery- shire. One of the experiments in Flintshire was of a new character and dealt with the improvement by means of manurial treatment of rough mountain pasture, and it was likely to yield useful results. Courses of lectures were given at seven centres in Denbighshire, with an average attendance of thirty- two, and at nine centres in Montgomeryshire, where the average attendance was forty-nine. Dur- ing the season travelling libraries, consisting of six or seven standard works, had been started, and the libraries were lent for a period to such centres as desired them. The cost of the College work, exclusive of the farm, was £ 2,195, to which county councils granted £ 1,058.
