THE ROADS.—Cyclists will be glad to learn that the road between here and Towyn, stretches of which have been recently laid with macadam, is now being put in order with the steam roller. Mr Lewis James, who is in charge, is doing good work. In a few days the road will) be completed and will no doubt be very greatly patronised, as it affords such excellent views of the bay and the Snowdon and Rivals ranges.

Corwen Fire Brigade.—A letter was read from the Parish Council of Corwen calling the District Council's attention to the necessity of pro- viding without delay a cart for storing and carry- ing the fire hose as recently, on the occasion of a fire breaking out at Penybryn, much time was wasted in fetching and taking up the hose.—On the motion of Mr Thomas Owen, seconded by Mr Godfrey Parry, the matter was referred to the Hydrants Committee.—The Rev Ivan T. Davies proposed, Mr R. R. Roberts seconded, and it was resolved to recommend to the Hydrants Committee to have a board put up by the Market Hall with the names of the members of the fire brigade on it so that the townspeople would know to whom to go in case of fire breaking out. Melinyivig Water Supply.—The Clerk stated that the first notices served on owners to provide water supply for their cottages at Melinywig had expired and asked for further instructions from tne Council. —-Mr Robert Wynne, one of the owners, said he was of opinion that no better supply could be got than from the existing wells. He had seen the spring mentioned and he could find only a few drops of water there even after the heavy rain. He thought the existing wells after being put in repair would give a sufficient supply of wholesome water. —Dr White said he had been told by persons from the plase that the wells dried up entirely during i droughty periods.—It was resolved that second notices bs sent to the owners to request them to provide the requisite supply within a month. The Proposecl Bridge over the Dee by Corwen.— A deputation having been appointed to approach the Hon. C. H. Wynn, RÚg, with respect to the deviation of the road on the Corwen side of the river through a portion of a meadow belonging: to him in accordance with the plan prepared by Mr E.. Edwards, surveyor, the Chairman handed in the following letter which he had received from Mr Wynn :—" Rug, Corwen, June 9th, 1899. Dear sir,—Referring to your remarks and the plans you put before me yesterday, together with a letter from the County Surveyor of Carnarvonshire which I have read and now return with the plans made by Mr Edwards, I have consid; red the subject and arrive at the following :—1st. The proposed devia- tion of the road (Corwen side of river Dse) would cut in two the field I recently paid about £500 for, and the road, if made, would greatly depreciate the value of this land. 2nd. Iu looking at Mr Edwards's plan of bridge and approaches, I consider that it would, if made, on account of the number of pillars on which it stands and the embankment of the two approaches, greatly retard the flow of flood water which is already so much retarded by the small fall and by the railway bridge, and in my opinion not only cause the winter floods to be deviated from the course of the river on to the adjacent low land, but also cause serious destruc- tion of the banks above and below the propo^d bridge, especially on the higher and lpft bank of the river as is the case with the London and North Western Railway bridge lower down and in my opinion be a continual source of expense and loss. 3rd. I was quite willing on certain conditions that the road approach should be made through my field on the Trewyn side of the river Dee as pointed out to me by the representatives of the CorwenRural District Council the end of January, 189S, provided the existing road adjoining this field was put in a state of cultivation to add to my field and I thought if the bridge was made it would be over the exist- ing ford, but even in that event I should require to be assured that any damage done to land by bridge pillars, abutments, aud approaches retarding vvaterflow would be made good. 4th. I observe that Mr Croom Johnson's plan of the bridge has been put aside in favour of one by Mr Edwards, but seem- ingly the Rural District Council of Corwen were not satisfied to accept this plan without consulting Mr Evans, the county surveyor of Carnarvonshire, thereon and I find Mr Evans has suggested import- ant alterations. I am strongly of opinion, with due respect for Mr Edwards and Mr Evans (who do not quite agree as to the strength of the bridge) that Mr Johnson's is the most experienced opinion to rely on in a matter of so much importance, especially when the County Council has promised jE500 and £200 towards the structure and approaches and.where every precaution would have to be taken to prevent the bridge being washed away when subject to the severe floods and, per- haps, the ratepayers' money of jE700 going with it; and I much doubt if the County Council would be satisfied with Mr Edwards's plan. 1 have now stated my views as briefly as I can and, moreover, must add that I do not consider the gain would be worth the cost of this bridge, the approaches being so far behind what they should be, especially when the water is out. I should have been very happy to see the deputation you mentioned yesterday, but as I do not consider we are likely to agree, I think it would be only occupying timefornopurpose. If the Urban District Council or thooe responsible for alteration of plans had before considering and ordering same to be got out, v/ritten to me and men- tioned the proposed alteration I could have at once told them that so far as I am concerned I would not approve. I hope you will give me credit for not without reason objecting to the altera- tion, for I assure you I consider it a necessity to do so and from no fractious spirit.—I am, dear sir, yours truly, Charles H. Wynn." Following the reading of the letter a lively discus- sion took place. Mr Edwards had by designing a much plainer bridge and taking a different site to that of Mr Johnson for it, estimated a saving of close upon a thousand pounds and his plans were pronounced by competent persons to be quite feasible. Ihe one great drawback, however, in them was the necessity of deviating a portion of the road through one of Mr Wynn's meadows and hence the Council's application to Mr Wynn. Sub- sequently, in face of Mr Wynn's reply, it was pro posed by Dr Jones, seconded by Mr E. Davies, and carried that Mr Edwards's plans be set aside. It was also decided thit before doing anything further with Mr Johnson's plans to ascertain what subscriptions had been pro- mised and what amount of money could be guaranteed for the work. The following resolution passed at a meeting of the Llandrillo Parish Coun- cil was also read:—" That this Council respectfully desires to inform the Edeyrnion Rural District Council that the ratepayers of this parish strongly object to any portion of the expense of erecting a carriage bridge over the Dee by Corwen being charged on the rates, and desires to suggest to the District Council, in face of financial and other difficulties, the advisability ot laying the bridge project aside for the present." Byeiaws.—Upon the motion of Rev Ivan T. Davies, seconded by Mr John Lloyd, the Clerk was directed to convene a joint meeting of the Edeyr- nion, Uwchaled, and Llangollen Rural District Councils to revise the byeiaws made some years ago by the old Rural Sanitary Authority of the Union.

The weather was beautifully fine. THE VOLUNTEERS. -011 Sunday the company paraded to the English Church, under the eommind of Lieutenant Wakefield, to listen to a sermon by the Rev Canon Trevor. In the course of his ser- mon the rev gentleman referred to the death of the late Captain Joseph Evans. Thecompany is going to camp at Porthcawl on Saturday, in preparation for which all the men were examined in full march- ing order by Lieutenant Wakefield on Tuesday night. The examination was witnessed by a large number of townspeople. Advance parties went to camp on Tuesday and Wednesday. THE POLICE STATION.—At the Montgomery Standing Joint Committee on Saturday the Surveyor said that he had been obliged to amend his estimate of the cost of the new police station at Machynlleth, the Prison Commissioners having recommended alterations in the plans involving an additional expenditure of £140. The alterations consisted of an additional staircase, a high wall round the prisoners yard, and additional accom- modation for females. It was resolved that the alterations be approved and that the County Council be requested to vote the additional sum required. THE SEWAGE DISPOSAL.—The Council inter. viewed Mr Kirby, engineer, on Tuesday, on the question of drafting an amended scheme for the disposal of sewage. Mr Kirby explained how matters stood with the Local Government Board and it was ultimately resolved that Messrs Kirby should prepare an amended scheme to be submitted for the approval of the Local Government Board. It was understood that Mr Kirby would immediately proceed to fix upon a new site for the septic tank, the old site not having been approved of by the Board. The members present were Mr W. M. Jones, chairman, Messrs John Thomas, G. W. Griffiths, John Pugh, H. Lewis, D. Smith, J. M. Breeze, R. Gillart, Rd. Owen, Rd. Rees, and T. Parsons, with Mr Rowlands, clerk Mr J. Jones, surveyor; and Dr A. O. Davies, medical officer. THE FATAL ACCIDENT.—On Friday, Mr John Rowlands, coroner, held a.n inquest on the body of Thomas Jones whose death, caused by a fall from a partly-demolished building, was reported in our last issue. Mr T. R. Morgan was foreman of the jury. —Margaret Jones, wife of the deceased, said her husband was sixty-four years of age and worked as a mason. Six weeks ago he suffered from in- fluenza, but had now recovered. He made no com- plaint as to his health on the day of the accident.— Hugh Evans, 3, Dovey View-terrace, a mason, said that he was working on the same building as deceased and they were engaged in taking slates off the roof. He did not see the deceased fall, but hit attention was called to the accident and he at once went for Dr Williams.—Sarah Jane Trevor, wife of Thomas Trevor. Poplar-road, said that she was in the lane and saw someone falling down. She called out and a number of people rushed to the spot. Deceased fell down backwards into the lane and did not speak after he struck the earth.—Dr Williams was called to the scene and he said that he found the deceased in a state of profound in- sensibility. There was a small incised wound on the back of his head and it was bleeding slightly. He ordered the deceased to be taken home and then made a further examination and found that Jones was suffering from the effects of compression of the brain. There was a rather extensive de- pression on the left side of the vault of the skull, but he could not satisfy himself that there was a fracture.. The case was hopeless from the first. In his opinion, deceased was seized with apoplexy. He lived for about an hour-and a-quarter after the accident.—Hugh Evans (recalled) said the height of the wall was fourteen feet.—John Owen Williams, builder, said deceased fell from the paves. Witnfess was not present at the time, but was speaking to the deceased about five minutes before and told him not to pull the timber down, but he appeared to have gone on pulling the timber down.—The jury returned a verdict in accoidance with the medical evidence.

The keeper early on Sunday morning found the reptile missing and followed its trail when it was found dead in the river. Thomas Evans, gardener of Mr Smethurst, Brynmair, went in and fished it out and it is now in his possession. COURT OF ARBITRATIJN.—The case of Finlay v. Greea was heard at the County Hall last Monday and Tuesday before Mr Pollock, the official referee.
