Henri Fournier. the French bicyclist, has died in hospital in New York as a result of being thrown from his machine by a team of horses which ran into him on the road. The East St Pancraselection resultediu the return of Mr Wrightson, the Conservative candidate, by a majority of 187 over Mr Costidloe, his Liberal opponent. This result makes no change in the re- presentation. On Thursday morning, the Hybrid Committee of the House of Commons (Mr Baldwin in the chair) refused to grant to the Rhyl Urban District Council the powers which they asked fur in their Bill lor regulating the use of the foreshore. Miss Peterson, daughter of the late rector of Biddenden, Kent, was charged last week, at the Kent Assizes, with the murder of John Whibley, a, shoemaker, by shooting hi.n in the schoolroom of the village. The accused was found guilty but in- sane and was ordered to be detained during her Majesty's pleasure. Lady Salisbury, who went to Waimer some days ago for the benefit of her health and was reported quite recently to have derived great benefit from the change, was on Wednesday week seized with paralysis. Lord Salisbury travelled to Walmer in the evening by specibil train and remained at the Castle. Happily the seizure proved to be a slight one. An engine driver named Charles Wood of East Ham, who is now awaiting trial on a. charge of robbing furnished apartments, has suddenly be- come a wealthy man, owmg to the death of an aunt, who left the sum of £26,000 to him and his brother. Neither, it is stated, can touch the money until the present case is settled. James Wihon of Edinburgh has established a new record, having while in a state of intoxication ridden from Edinburgh to Wigan, a distance of 200 miles, on the buffer of the mail postal train. His explanation when charged with a breach of the railway regulations as to why he remained so long on the buffer was that he was too drunk to get off. He was fined 5s and costs. The Ron. Charles Granville Gordon, son of Lord Granville Gordon and nephew of the Marquess of Huntley died on Saturday morning from the effects of a fall. Deceased, who was an officer in the 3rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, went to call on his cousin about one o'clock on Friday morning. Fail- ing to rouse him, Mr Gordon climbed on to the roof, but lost his hold and fell a distance of twenty feet. The Birmingham Watch Committee at a special meeting held on Monday appointed Mr G. H. Rafter chief constable of the city. Mr Rafter, who is forty-two years of age, has district inspector of the Royal Irish Constabulary at Boyle. The appointment was vacant owing to the retirement of Mr Joseph Ferndale through ill e lth. Mr Raf- ter has had sixteen years' Irish police experience. The Duke of Westminster whose horse, Flying Fox, won the Eclipse Stakes, value £JO,OOO last week, has presented that sum to the Royal Alex- andra Hospital, Rhyl, of which his Grace is presi- dent. The gift will enable the committee to pro- ceed at once with the erection of an administrative block. The hospital is being built facing the sea, and the foundation stone was laid by the Princess of Wales, who is the patroness of the institution. A coroner's inquest was held at Bath the other day on the body of a fruiterer named Watson who was found, on a post-mortem examination being made, to have in his stomach twenty small bottles containing mercury, securely stoppered with gutta- percha. They weighed over a pound, had perfor- ated the stomach, and set up peritonitis, which caused death. The jury found that the deceased swallowed the bottles while in a sLate of dementia, believing they were medicine. The liner Paris" has been safely moored in Falmouth Docks. It is stated that the Paris" was salved on a no cure no pay" understanding, it being agreed that in case she was floated the salvors should have half her then value, The operations at the Manacles have cost about £4,000 and half the value of the Paris" now is said to be represented by £75,000. The salvors, therefore, stand to make £71,000 out of the job. The prospects of the creditors of the great liquor firm do not appear particularly bright at the pre- sent time, as all the heritable property has now been exposed for public roup and failed to get a bid. Last week the bonded warehouse and the palatial offices were offered in Dowell's rooms" but there was no offer. The offices, which are fitted with mosaic and marble pillars and a white marble stair- case, were offered at only £7,000. The price of the brewery has been reduced to £30,000.
