BOW STREET CHAIR EISTEDDFOD
BOW STREET CHAIR EISTEDDFOD The Bow Street chair eisteddfod was hpid on Thursday (yesterday) in a spacious tent erected on a suitable spot in Gogerddan Park opposite the Railway Station. A similar function had not been held in tne district for some years and the in- habitants put their best efforts into the venture, determined to make it an successful, it not more so, than the eisteddfodau which have been held in past years at Talybont, Borth, and other places in the neighbournood. The promoters were favoured with ideal weather aud the time being the close of the hay season, when the farmers are allowed a little breathing time before the advent of the corn harvest, it was not surprising that there was a splendid attendance. However, the large crowd which was present would not have been attracted had it not been for the taste and judgment shown in the selection of items of the programme which could not fail to interest all lovers of music, poetry, and art in the locality. The chairman of the Com- mittee which organized the eisteddfod was the Rev J. Llewelyn, the energetic hon. secretaries were Messrs J. Meurig Edwards, Monumental Works, and Mr D. J. Morgan, Caer Villa, Bow Street, and the treasurer was Mr Thomas Davies. The adjudicators were—Music, Mr D. Emlyn Evaas poetry, Hwfa Mon and the Rev T. E. Roberts art, Mr T. E. Morgan. The afternoon meeting commenced at half-past one (instead of half-past twelve). Some disap pointment was caused by the announcement that Hwfa Mon was unable to be present through ill- ness, His place was, however, ably filled by the Rev R. E. Jones, Talybont, who did not fail to keep his audience in good spirits during the short intervals between the competitions. The chair was occupied by Mr J. P. Thomas, Aberystwyth, who, at his own request, was excused delivering an address owing to the delay in starting the meeting. Meurig (Mr Abram Jones) having given a bardic address, the programme was proceeded with. The first item was the pianoforte solo competi- tion. There was one competitor only, Miss Mollie Owen, County School, Aberystwyth, who was awarded the prize. Hwfa Mon's adjudi- cation of the englyn, "Celynen" was then read. Out of four competitors, Mr Watkins, Bryn- crug, was adjudged the best. This was followed by a duet competition, Y Llusern," in which four couples took part. The Rev T. E. Roberts gave his adjudication on the competition (confined to girls) for the best advice in twelve sentences, dividing the prize between Miss C. J. Pritchard, Talybont; Miss M. A. Jones, Salem, and Miss S. Edwards, Salem. Mr Emlyn Evans, giving his opinion on the duet competition, commented upon the youth of the singers and said there was a great danger of straining young voice. A little voice spoiled in that way would never be recovered. He awarded the prize to Misses Georgina and Rosina Jones, William-street, Aberystwyth. Two competed for the tenor solo prize (test piece, Sanctaidd Wr Gofidus"). Four had sung in the preliminary. The adjudicator declared Mr Thomas Jones, Llanfihangel, to be the winner. Then followed a competition for the recitation of Blodeuyn Bach," in which three small boys and a little girl took part. The prizi was divided be- tween Masters Isaac Lloyd Evans, Penparke, and William Williams, Salem. The adjudicators were Mr H. Meredith and the Rev T. E. Roberts. Two choirs sang in the children's choir competition which elicited considerable interest. The test piece was 0 Tywallt ar ein Gwlad (J. T. Rees, Mus. Bac.), the prize being given by Mr P. P. Pryse, Lodge Park. The first choir to ascend the platform was the Talybont Choir, led by Mr Edwin Evans, who were received with loud cheers. The PeDgarn Choir, led by Mr D. J. Morgan, A.C., sang second. The adjudicator, amidst cheering, declared the first choir to be the winner. The most interesting item in the programme was then taken, being the competition for the chair. The subject was" Minnos" ("Evening"). The Rev John Davies, BwJchydderwen, read Hwfa Mon's adjudication. Six competitions had been received. He declared "Am dir uweh yn ym- drechu to be easily the best, who was led up to the platform amidst Joud cheers and the usual ceremony was gone through. Addresses were then delivered by the bards, causing considerable amuse- ment. The successful bard was Mr David Morgan. Garn House, Bow Street, who was invested by the Chairman. Two sang in the contralto solo competition, having been selected out of seven in the preliminary. The first was Miss Rosina Jones, Aherystwyth, a little girl of about ten, and the second Miss Warrington, Aberys wyth. The Rev T. E. Roberts gave his adjudication on the translation from English into Welsh. Tile first was "Elfrydydd," who did not answer to his nime,—Giving his adjudica- tion on the contralto so!o competition, Mr Emlyn Evans aid the voice of the second was excellent, as was also the expression and the articulation. She woull be given the prize. He was sorrytherH was no second prize which the first singer, who had a very swett voice, fully deserved. The next coinp titiun was that for ladies choirs numbering over twenty. Two choirs, Lhe Talybont Ladies Choir, lead by Miss James, Lerry House, and the Borth Ladies Choir, led by Mr D. J. Morgan, competed. The adjudication on the chief essay, the subject being Cymeriad Ysbrydol yr Eglwys (The Spiritual Character of the Church), was then read by the Rev T. E. Roberts. He said there were two splendid essays sent in, but the best was that of the Rev Mr Evans, Biptist minister, Penrhyncoch. whose production deserved a much more valuable prize) Mr Emlyn Evans, adjudicating [on the ladies' com- petition, said the singing of both choirs was very good and the men would have to look to their laurels. He could not but admire the business-like way in which the first choir set to work. The singers and the piano were not shifted from one position to another as was generally done when male voice choirs were singing. .(Laughter.) After enumerating some of the faults of the choirs, he said both gave splendid render ings, but of the two he thought the last choir (Mr Morgan's choir) was the best. He had never heard the lower voices so much to advantage in any ladies choir he had heard as in this choir. (Cheer-.) This concluded the afternoon meeting. Mr H. Bonsall, Cwm, presided over the .evening meeting, being accompanied by Miss Bonsall. 0 The CHAIRMAN said—I am much honoured by being asked to take the chair this afternoon, but feel rather like the naughty boy put to stand on a stool for all the ethers to lock at and am not very comfortable in the position, as I know I don't de- serve it. ("Yes.") Some of you, I am sure, have a sneaking sympathy with a naughty boy. But it is a privilege, and we are sorry to be unable to welcome the great archdruid, Hwfa Mon, who is unwell, and should have deemed it a great honour that he, the representative of our ancient lawgivers, should come to Bow Street. (Cheers.) Yet we, too, have some who have done honour to our land many centuries ago, for we know that the house of Gogerddan, whose gates are there, is directly representative of the ancient kings of Wales, and the land upon which our tabernacle is resting to-day is the same land for which they strove in the days when it was the abode of royalty. And though not claiming to rank with these illustrious sons, I also am a child of these mountains, and can trace my line to Roderick the Great and Cadwallader. (Cheers.) It is a pleasant and wonderful thought that the ancient druidic worship should have been so merci. ful and wise iu doctrine as to astonish the Roman philosopher and historian, for Lucan relates that the legiona of Italy had found a people Wise beyond their neighbours who got their wisdom in the lonely heart of the forest." Perhaps it was in Cwm Woods (Laughter.). Yet the beauty of it is that our Christianity absorbs all that is best in druidic lore, and rejects what is inconsistent with our higher knowledge. Just as the Church of Spytty Cynfyn is placed in the centre of a druidic circle, and built of the stones that compose that circle, while a few are left outside to mark the other faith, so does Christianity assimilate all that is best in the religions of mankind and rejects what is unfit for itself. I have only one word more to say. I have thought long and deeply on the needs of Wales, striving to ascertain what we most want, and I think what Wales most wants is unity. (Hear, hear.) In business, in religion, in family life, we want unity. But the world wants ib more, so that if we are united in ourselves, the world will want to know why this little nation is so successful and will strive to copy our methods just as we have copied the people of Palestine. The Jews were a small nation and Palestine was about the same size as Wales. Who shall say that Wales may not be as Palestine was, and more ? But the Jews were the most practical and business-like people in the world, and we must not lose our heads in ideal imaginings nor be carried away by our emotions. Our unity must be full of facts and figures, of commonsense and truth, and it must war against sham and fraud and deceit of every description. (Applause.) We are a very wealthy nation when you consider our coalfields and mines and slate quarries, our fisheries, and our natural advantages. All we want is co-operation and mutual assistance in developing our resources and to avoid waste. Then when we cease to spend our money in fighting each other and are able to devote out energies to common ends, we shall succeed easily and immensely in our own country and be able to carry the know- ledge of Christ and the benefits that result from knowledge to the ignorant, the oppressed, and those who have failed. I give you My word—what is wanted in Wales is "Unity." (Applause.). The soprano solo competition then took place in which there were two competitors, and the prize was awarded to Miss Jones, Tanca&tell, Aber. ystwyth. The prize for the musical composition was taken by Mr J. Lumley Davies, G.T.S.C., Lledrod, who was invested by Miss Bonsall. A recitation competition next took place. Three took part. The next itwn was a ringing competition for a party of sixteen. The Pengam party led by Mr Thomas Jones was the only one that sang. The adjudication on the recitation competition was given by the Rev T. E. Roberts. He said one competitor had given an almost perfect recitation in expression and reading, but omitted one line. The other had given a faultless reading, but his ,expression was not gond. In view of the omission of thQ former they had decided to divide the prize between Mr John James, Penparke, and another. Mr Emlyn Evans declared the party in the previous competition to be well worthy of the prize. (Applause.) It was announced that the winner of the prize for the translation from English into Welsh was Mr William Adams, Pengarn, now of Cardiff. There was some excellent singing in the next competition, in which a prize was offered for the best duet. the pieces being selected by the singers. Three parties sang. Mr H. Meredith next read Hwfa Mon's ad- judication on the composition of lines suitable for singing to the harp. Llewelyn Goch," who was declared the winner, did net appear to claim the prize. The priz in the duet competi- tion was awarded by the adjudicator to Mr and Ilss Lumley, Machynlleth. Great interest was evinced in the next competition which wai for the rendering by a male voice choir of Milwyr Rhufeinig." The Llanon Choir sang first, the Aberystwyth Male Voice Party coming second, and the Padarn Glee Society third. It was stated that the Idris Choir had not arrived owing co the lateness of the train and it was decided not to wait, the event having been already postponed from third place on the programme to thirteenth. Mr Emlyn Evans, giving his adjudication, said not one of the choirs had grasped the spirit of the work. The first choir gave a gojd rendering. In the second choir the bass voices were splendid and he was sure a London conductor would go a long way in order to get hold of them. Nevertheless they were rough and wanted a good deal of cultivating. The teuor was too thin and too light and the choir was heard to a disadvantage in the last part. The voices in the third choir did not show so much talent, the time was too quick and the enunciation was not clear. He had no hesitation in awarding the prize to the first choir. (Cheers.) Mr David Davies, the conductor, was then invested. Mr Emlyn Evans adjudged Miss Lumley and party, Machyn. lleth, to be fully deserving of the prize in the quartette competition, they being the only competitors. Two sang in the bass solo competition which followed, who elicited great praise from the adjudicator. Both sang excellently, of the two the best was the first, Mr E. E. Jenkins, Penlhvyn. The last item on the programme was the chief choral competition. Three choirs com- peted, viz., Cwmerfin and district, Aberystwyth, and Penygarn choirs. Amid considerable excite- ment, the prize was awarded to the Aberystwyth choir which was led by Mr J. Harris. The pro- ceedings then concluded with the singing of the Welsh National Anthem. The eisteddfod was a great success, the attendance at the evening meet- ing being very large. It is understood that a good amount has been netted which will go to pay off the debt on the Clarach Independent Chapel on whose behalf the eisteddfod was got up. The pro- moters wish to express their gratitude to Sir Pryse, Mr H. Bonsall, and others who assisted in making the venture a success.
REMARKABLE THUNDERSTORM. IN…
REMARKABLE THUNDERSTORM IN SOUTH CARNARVON. The thunderstorm^ which passed over- North. Wales on Thursday night created remarkable havoo. in the neighbourhood of Nevin, a. remote parish in "■ South Carnarvonshire. At Moriah, four of a herd! of five heifers were killed. Half a mile away a mare was destroyed. At Penygraig the- lightning fired a haystack and killed a. cow, and near this place another cow was killed. Near Aberdaroll two sheiep MX tjhft mountain were struck. The storm has never been equalled in the locality and the people thought it would never end, as it seemed to be circling round, and when they hoped it was passing away it came up again with added fur. Between Tid- weiliog and Nevin rain fell in sheets and th& roads were ftooded to a depth of a couple of feet and where they werejon gradients they became roaring torrents. The bridge over the brook at the former place was carried away, and all the timber stored in a neighbouring joiner's yard was washed down the stream. Printed and Published by J. rom the gapers. I Baroness Nathaniel Rothschild died suddenly on Thursday from heart disease. Mr Phillip, district superintendent at Carlisle, has been appointed assistant general manager ot the North British Railway. The Epsom Guardians have provided separate sit- ting rooms for aged and respectable inmates of the workhouse. There were no prisoners for trial at Radnorshire Assizes on Thursday and the High Sheriff presented Mr. Justice Bruce with a pair of red gloves. Two civil cases were disposed of. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company have, it is understood, a scheme in hand for the widening and shortening of their line between Liverpool city and Manchester, so as to perform the journey in a little over half an hour. It was officially announced on Tuesday, that Mary Ann Ansell, who was executed last week, was born in November, 1877. It is added that be- fore the execution she made a full confession of the crime and of the motive thai, prompted it. Speaking at Ashford on Saturday, Mr Walter Long. president of the Board of Agriculture, said it was not surprising that practical should at first have scorned science in agriculture, but the walls of prejudice were gradually crumbling away. He suggested that in the improvement of the meat supply and in dairy produce there was much which the farmer might do to better his position, though hia hope in corn was lost, A terrible explosion occurred in the starboard enaint-roomof' he new torpedo destroyer "Bullfinch", while that vessel was undergoing speed and machin- ery trials in the Solent on Friday afternoon. The connecting rod of the enginp suddenly broke, smash- ing the cylinder, with the result that the engine room was filled with steam ami boiling water. Eight men killed on the spot and another succumbed shortly afterwards. Several other men were severely scalded. A siicckiu2 accident occuri^.l on Friday uu Acton Hill, a steep incline near Wrexham. It appears that as a pair of horses and brake containing a party from Chester street Baptist Chapel, Wrex- ham, were g dug up the hill a trace bioke and the horses swerved round. The driver, Mathew Graham, jumped off to stop them and by some means became entang'ed in the harness. He was dragged along the road, was kicked on the head. and had his skult fractured. Deceased was well known in the district, having been for over thirty years coachman to Mr Ehvard Evaiks of Bronwylfa. A labourer living at Ross has had an extraordi- nary escape trom drowning. Early on Monday morning the proprietor of a pleasure fair stationed in a field skirted by a brook was roused by his servants who said they had fouud a man dr iwned. He went with them to the spot, and was in the act of removing the body when the man awoke and roundly abused them for disturbing his sleep. It transpired that the man had fallen itvo the brook. His head, however, rented on a stone in mid-stream and he slept soundly in the water without being drowned. A curious story comes from New York. A German benevolent society Sfcured to its mem- hers the payment of for funeral ex- penses One of the members had the misfortune to lose his leg, and he thought that as a portion of his body was dead, he was entitled to chim a fourth of the total payment-víz., £10. The society disputed the claim, but eventually agreed to pay 40 dol8. (£8) for the leg. As the rules of the society provided that the payment due to the members must be applied exclusively to funeral expenses, it was stipulat-d that the wlv-le of the £8 should be devoted to the burial of the deceased leg. Some days after the member, who was of the Semitic per- suasion, followed his leg to Brooklyn Cemetery. An action was brought before Mr Justice Dar- ling, in the Queen's Bench on Saturday, against Mrs Williams, wife of a vicar, residing near Huddersfield, on a bill for fifty pounds, drawn on her husband, which had passed into the hands of the plaintiff, Mr Pulleyne. It was stated that they could not be found at their address and that notice of the bill having been dishonoured had been for- warded to them at the National Liberal Club. The question was whether the notice was sufficient. There was no appearance on the part of the de- fendant, and Mr Justice Darling, holding that every effort had been made to give the defendant notice, gave judgment for the plaintiff for fifty pounds, with interest and costs.

Jimmy's Idea.—Jimmy went with his parents to take a meal with friends who observe the old form of asking a silent blessing. When all heads were bowed. Jimmy endured the agony about three seconds and then whispered shrilly—" Wake up, mamma Hain't you 'shamed of yourself to go 10 sleep over such ajrdly dinner as this ?" ONE OF DR NEWMAN HALL'S STORIES.—The "Home Magazine" recalls a story which Dr New- man Hall used to tell on the lecture platform. An illiterate negro preacher said to his congregation My brethren, when de fust man Adam was made, he was made ob wet clay, and set up agin the pal- ings to dry." "Do you say," said one of-the con- gregation, "dat Adam was made ob wet clay an" set up agin de palings to dry ?" Yes, sar, I do." "Who made the palings?" Sit down, sar," said the preacher sternly "sueh questions as dat would upset any syatem of theology." Although she may not touch a drop, Yet, when you come to think Of how she works, the barmaid, is A perfect "slave to drink
