TALVBONT !AGRICULTURA L SOCIETY.
TALVBONT AGRICULTURA L SOCIETY. REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL. EXHIBITION. The Talybont and North Cardiganshire Agri- cultural and Horticultural Society has only been in existence four years, but the show which they held last Wednesday would have done credit to a society twenty years old. The inhabitants of Talybont tftke a keen and intelligent interest in the Society and their efforts are well supported by people living immediately around. The show is making wonder ful progress. Last Wednesday the entries numbered about 550, showing an increase of over half a hundred on last year. What was more satisfactory still, however, was the extraordinary good quality of the exhibits in practically all the sections. Fortune smiles on the Society in yet another direction. It is in the most flourishing financial position. They had a balance in hand from last year of JE149 and this year an additional sum of E115 has been received in subscriptions' The unique success of the Society is due in no small inea-ure to Mr Pryse P Pryse, the chairman of Committee. Outside of committee he has worked hard and thoroughly and in committee there has not been a more regular attendant dur- ing the past four years. In fact, he is the back- bone of the Society. His indetatigability has in- fused life into every official and into every member of the Committee, who one and all are deserving of special commendation, particularly Mr J T Motgan, the treasurer, Mr William Morris, and Captain Howell, hon secretaries, and the patient and courteous secretary, Mr W R Morgan. On the previous day the weather was squally and wet and there was every appearance of unpropitious weather for the show, but Wednesday morning opened bright and fine and the wind had consider- ably ablted. Except for one or two short showers the weather continued favourable chroughout the day. The attendance, as a result, was very large there being a plethora of conveyances crowded with people from Aberystwyth alone. Practically all the people of Talybont and district were present and they gavt- a definite proof of the interest they took in the show by paying for admission and not acting as the inhabitants usually do at local sho" s that is, striving to sneak in or obtain a free view from adjoining fields. Amongst those present was Mr Vaughan Davies, M.P. The Talybont Brass Band, under the conductor- ship of Mr J J Hughes, gave selections of music during the day. The president this year was Sir Pryse Pryse, Bart., and the vice presidents were Messrs Pryse P Pryse, R C Richardes, D Howeli, R H Rees, and J. Francis. The members of the Committee were -Mr Pryse P Pryse (chairman), Dr James (vice- chairman), Mr J T Morgan (treasurer), Mr William Morris and Captain Howell (honorary secretaries), Messrs J M Williams, J B Morgan, H Seymour; Davus, R E J Will-anis, J Joseph, John James, R D Jenkins, J Edwards, D Jenkins, D Owens, R Jenkins, W R Jones, J Jones, J Roberts, J R James, James Richards, Richard Phillips, Richard Jones, John Richards, J Griffiths, and D Davies. The stewards were Dr James Captain Howell Messrs James Richards, Rhiwlas W. Richards, Cefnhendre J. B. Morgan, Glanfraed D. Owen, Berthlwyd Abraham Davit-s, Tyngarth David Jenkins, Cerrigcaranau Richard Thomas, Brys- gaga J. James, Caergywydd R. Jones, Talybont; J Joseph, Gogerddan J T Morgan, Maesnewydd James Thomas, Glanclettwr. The judges were—for draught horses, Mr E Hughes and Captain Webley P Pryse light horses, In j ,?rDy and Rev H Ivor James Welsh cattle and Welsh sheep, Messrs E Evans, Maes- mynach, and L Williams- Abermaide cattle of any other breed and sheep of any other breed, Messrs Edward Hughes, Aberfrydlan, and J C Carruthers, Machynlleth shearing, Messrs W Jones, Penpont- bren, and D Edwards, Dolfawr roots and grain, Messrs Pryse P Pryse and R C Richardes butter, Mrs Pryse P Pryse and Miss Davies, Fridd garden produce, Messrs Viery and Thomas jump. ing competition, Messrs Pryse P Pryse, R C Richardes, and Captain W P Prvse. Last year the show of horses was highly praised, but this year there was a still better exhibition. The entries were more numerous and the exhibits were almost without exception well-bred animals. The draught horses were the shining lights. Mr J M Williams, Brynbwl, won the first prize for a draught mare and foal. The foal was by Mr Williams's own shire horse, Sir Dare," and the animal was greatly admired. The class for draught mares or geldings was very good, but side bones were prevalent in some of the exhibits. In this class, in which there were ten exhibits, the mare which won the first prize at the Mach- ynlleth show was not even commended. Mr Jen- kins, Cerrigcaranau, won the first prize and he also won the premier prize for the best pair of draught horses, Mr E J Williams, Cynnullmawr, taking the second prize in the latter class. The other three exhibits were stated by the judges not to be quite sound. The class for two-year-old draught colts or fillies was a strong one, there being ten entries and the three animals who won the prizes were spoken highly of by the judges who said they were very useful horsBs. The first prize was taken by Sir Pryse Pryse, Bart.; the second by Mr James, Brynllys and the third by Mr E J Williams, Cyn- nullmawr. There was a good number of entries for the best yearling draught colt or filly. The ex- hibits were of exceptional quality, the judges stating that they reflected the highest credit upon the district. There was keen competition in the classes for cob, mares, and foals under fifteen hands, roadster mares and foals fifteen hands and over, two-year-old hackney colts or fillies, yearling hackney colts or fillies, and the animals, taking them on the whole, were in splendid condition. Special praise was bestowed by the judges on the class for the best-actioned mare or gelding under fourteen hands. There were nine entries and the first prize was awarded to a pretty chestnut pony owned by Mr Jenkins, Cerrigcarranau, whilst Mr Morris, Brynowen, took the second prize. The class for mountain ponies twelve hands and under won encomiums all rouud. Miss M. E. Williams, Brynbwl, took the first prize with a beautiful roan, and Mr Evans, Goetre, was second. The class for the best p ny under thirteen hands foaled in 1898 drew fourteen entries, and the class for the best pony and foal un,ier thirteen hands eleven entries. In the former Mr W. Evans, Bryngryffty, won the first prize, and in the latter Mr R. H. Rees, Wood- lands, took premier honours. Although the entries were not as numerous as in other classes, the class for the best pony under thirteen hands foaled in 1897 was splendidly contested. Excepting one the seven exhibits were good animals, Mr Griffiths, Dolclett > r, taking the first vii-izi, There were thirteen entries in the class for the best foal by Mark Eaton. Tne latter was brought to the dis- trict for the benefit of his tenants and others by Mr Pryse P. Pryse. The number ef entries exceeded all expec ations and the quality of the exhibits was very high. Mr Griffiths, Dolgiu, won the first prize, and Mr Evans, Tanllan, second. Unfortun- ately the horse leapiiigcompetitions did not attract many entrie-, there being ouly one entry in the local competition and two in the open. Mr Jenkins, Hen! afod, won both first prizes, his success against Dr Dave's horse in the open event being greeted with vociferous cheering. The black cattle last year were considered to be by far better than those exhibited in any other show in North Wales. This year, although the quality was exceptionally g"ocl, the exhibits could nnt be sud to be up ro la-t year. The bull calves were the best class, Mr Jenkins, Henhafod. taking the fint pnze. The first prize for the best bull was won by Mr Phillips, Llwynglas, with a magnificent animal and Mr Howell, Nantcellanfawr, was awarded the second prize. Mr James, Brynllys, won the first priz, for the best cow in milk or calf with a fine animal and Mr Howell made a good second. In the class for the best two-year-old heifers, Mr Howell won both the first and third prizes and Mr Jenkins, Henhafod, was second. There were thirteen entries in the class for yearling heifers and here again Mr Howell took the premier honours, whilst Mr Jones, Elgar, won the second prize. Mr John Jones, Ynyshir, won the first prize for the best pair of two-year-old steers with the animals which were awarded the first prizes at the Machynlleth and Dolgelley shows. Mr James, Ab, rc wmdole, won the first prize for the best pair of yearling steers out of six competitors. There was a distinct and pronounced improvement in the classes for catJe of any other breed. A very close c ontest for the he-it bull resulted in favour of Mr Bonsall, Fronfraith, Mr James, Peithyll, taking the second prize. Mr James followed un this success by winning the first prize for the best yearling bull with the same animal. There was likewise a keen competition in the class for bull calve*. Mr Bonsall, Fronfraith, again took first prize Dr James was adjudged second and Mr Parry, Tyllwyd, third. The c'asses for cows in milk or calf, yearling heifers, heifer calves, at- tracted a large nuri>bjr of entries and the exhibits were of very good quality. The class for two- year-old heifers was disappointing, although there were eight entries. The yearling steers shown by Mr Bonsall were remarkably-fine animals and they took the first prize and the steers shown by Mr James, Peithyll, won the second prize. The ex- hibits of cows by cottagers numbered five and they were all in very good condition. Mr J E Jones, Comminscoch, won the first prize, and Mr Evans, smith, Penrhyncoch, the second prize. The entries in Welsh sheep, uplands and low- lands, were very numerous, being' largely in excess of last year. The rams in the upland section were not up to what might have been expected from the district. The ram by Mr Dd. James, Cefncoch, which won the first prize was, however, a very fine animal. Ram lambs were a rather indifferent lot, but the majority of the ewes, yearling ewes, and ewe lambs exhibited were of superb quality. There was also a great improvement in the classes for two- year-old and three-year-old wethers. In the low lands section rams were of a better quality than in the highlands section. Mr Jones, Ynyshir won the first and second prizes for the best yearling ram. There was likewise a good exhibition of ewes. Mr Jones Ynyshir, here again won two first prizes, and he also won first prize for ewe lambs. The exhibits in sheep of any other breed were in prime condition. The ram of Mr William Rowlands, Aberystwyth, which took the first prize was an animal which it would be hard to S in any county show. There were nine entries in the shearing class and a spirited contest was witnessed. Th^entrieaIn and this was also the case with garden produce, which is rapidly becoming a feature of° the°show' ™,s mMi'88 flt,een & n HORSES. 2 r J M Wi,liams- Brynbwl; Tyllwyd Farm'. ernScaranau 5 3, Joseph Parry, carDrug;h2,Tje Parry, Tyllwyd Farm Cynullmawr 3> Jcseph Pair of draught horses-I D Jenkins, Cerrig. caranau; 2, E J Williams, Cynuilmawr.
