Porth Police' %e Court.
Porth Police %e Court. Thursday.—Before the Stipendiary (Mr. Arthur Lewis, Dr. E. N. Davies, and Mr. Wm. Evans. BEST THING FOR HIM. Mr. Stanley Jones, solicitor, Ponty- pridd, made an application for bail on the behalf of Danl. Morgan, one of the two youths who attempted to commit suicide in the Tylorstown reservoir. Morgan's brother-in-law promised to take care of him. In granting bail, Morgan in a sum of jE25, and two other sureties of £ 10 each, the Stipendiary, addressing the brother- in-law, said that the best thing they could do for Morgan was to try to entice him to give up the drink. MATCH IN THE MINE. James Honeyfield, haulier, employed at tne Bertie Pit, Trehafod, was charged with a breach of the special rules of the Coal Mines Regulation Act. Mr. Stanley Jones prosecuted. William Rees, master haulier, said that on examination of defendant's clothes he found a live match in defendant's waist- coat pocket. Defendant said that he brought the coat and vest from Bristol, and was not aware that the match was in the vest pocket. A fine of JE1 was imposed. Humphrey Walter Jones, collier, em- ployed at the Bertie Pit, Trehafod, was charged with a similar offence, and fined £1 and costs. A PORTH SHOP LIFTER. Rachel Lewis, a married woman, of Porth, was summoned on four charges of stealing cloth, value 20s., the property of Otto Faller, pawnbroker, Porth. Emil Hebster, assistant at Mr. Faller's establishment, said defendant visited the, shop on March 18th, and when she left, the cloth was missing. P.O. Palmer gave evidence of arrest. In the dock, defendant expressed her sorrow at what had taken place, and her husband, who was called, declared that lie believed his wife was brought to this by her daughters. Defendant was bound over in CIO, and her husband in a similar sum, to be of good behaviour for six months. GAMING ON SUNDAY. A charge of playing brag" on the highway on Sunday was brought against John Pritchard, John Prosser, Andrew Watts, James Stevens, James King, and John Harries, all of Ynyshir. P.C. Williams said that these men were always playing on this particular spot, and it was very difficult to catch them. All the defendants, with the exception of Pritchard, were fined 7s. 6d. each. Pritchard, who was absent, was fined 10s. WOULD HAVE RAN AWAY. A married woman, named Mary Eliz. Jones, of Stanleytown, was charged by Mathia Frowde, also of Stanleytown, with threats. Mr. Thos. Phillips, Pontypridd, prosecuted, and Mr. Charles Mathews defended. Mrs. Frowde, on being sworn, said that the defendant (Mrs. Jones) came outside her house and called upon her to come into the street, using a most repulsive threat, and saying that she was prepared to do five years for her. The defendant admitted calling Mrs. Frowde to come on the road, but added that she did not mean to hit her, and would have ran away if she had come out. George Cole, brother of defendant, also gave evidence. The case was dismissed. SOAP AND SCRUBBING BRUSH MIS- APPLIED. John Davies, Mardy, was charged by Mrs. Mary Ann Williams with assault. The complainant said that the defen- dant and herself were having an argument, when defendant lost his temper and threw a lump of soap at her, hitting her in the side. Complainant's son, George Williams, also spoke to seeing the defendant throw the soap. Defendant asked witness if he had not threatened to brain him with a hatchet stick, or shoot him. Witness stoutly denied threatening any- thing of the sort. Emily Watts said she saw the bruise on Mrs. Nvilliams' side. Defendant defended his action on the plea that the complainant threw a scrub- bing brush at him. He was, however, fined 15s. A MARDY MAN'S FREAK. A man named Henry Jones, from Mardy, who did not appear, was charged with three offences at the instigation of the Taff Vale Railway Company. The first offence was that of riding on the foot- board of the train between Ferndale and Mardy, (2) wilfully interfering with the passengers, and (3) travelling without a ticket. All the offences were committed on the 4th March. Mr. Cyril Brown (of Messrs. Ingledew, Cardiff, prosecuted for the Taff Vale Railway Company). Mrs. Catherine Jones, of Merthyr, gave evidence to the effect that she was in the 8 o'clock train at Ferndale, when a man came to the door and asked if he should come in. Witness said nothing, but walked out to another compartment, in which was another lady. After the train haa steamed out of the station towards Mardy, she and the other lady heard someone walking outside. On looking through the window, she saw the defen- dant proceeding, along the footboard out- side, and go into the next compartment. Wm. Henry Painter, of Mardy, also spoke to seeing defendant walk on the !"footboard between Ferndale and Mardy. Defendant was under the influence of drink. At Mardy, the ladies reported the matter to the clerk at the station. David Mordecai, clerk at Mardy Station, said the ladies reported the defendant to him, but he could not find him. After going out of the station he found Jones on the bridge, and brought him back with the assistance of Wm. Henry Painter. Defendant did not have a ticket. James Jones, ticket collector, said defen- dant did not pass him at the gate. The Bench remarked that it was a very bad case, and the defendant was fined 40s. for interfering with the other passengers, 40s. for having no ticket, and 20s., or fourteen days, for walking on the foot- board. DISGRACEFUL LANGUAGE. William Hanover, Penrhiwfer, was charged with using bad language at Pen- rhiwfer. An officer stated that his language was disgraceful. He was fined 10s. A second charge was brought against William Hanover of refusing to quit the Lewis Arms, Penrhiwfer, and creating a disturbance. Mr. Charles Mathews pro- secuted. Thomas Jones, son of the landlord, said that on the 19th of March the defendant came into the hotel and commenced talk- ing very loudly to two men in the bar. In the course of the conversation he swore and used some filthy expressions. The complainant asked him to leave, but he refused, and losing his temper, he picked un a jar and threatened to throw it at the complainant, who was behind the counter. Seeing that the defendant would not leave, the complainant sent for the police. Catherine Mary Jones, sister of com- plainant, spoke to hearing the defendant swear and use foul language. He also threatened to hit her with the jug. P.C. Cummings said he was called in to eject defendant, who used very bad lan- guage in his (witness') presence. The defendant was fined 15s.
