The bazaar was opened on Thursday by Mrs. Griffiths, Porth House, who in a neat little speech said that her sympathy was with the English Baptist Church, and gave a donation of five guineas. Mr. E. Samuel, M.A., presided over the bazaar, and Miss Gwen Mathias rendered the song, "Promise of Life," in the morn- ing, and Vale of Life in the evening. The Rev. W. E. Prince (pastor), despite his indisposition, was present. The bazaar turned out to be most successful. The committee, who consisted of only fourteen ladies, started on their venture without any funds, all the work being voluntary. Unstinted praise is due to Mrs. W. H. Bowen, who, in the capacity of secretary, carried out her duties ener- getically. Great praise is also due to Mis. Samuel (president) and Mrs. Harding (treasurer) and to the other members of the committee. The committee have handed over JE50 to the treasurer of the church', and a sum was kept in hand to start another venture on a future occa- sion. All the stalls were tastefully deco- rated by the stallholders, and floral deco- rations were kindly lent by Alderman W. H. Mathias, Tynycymmer Hall, Porth. The recital was opened by the singing of a hymn, after which the band played a march, "The New Colonial" (Hall), following which they played the chorus, Pilgrims (" Tann- hauser "—Wagner). "Eternal Love" (T. D. Edwards) was sung by Mr. A. J. Jenkins, who possesses a fine tenor voice. Olla Podrida," pianoforte scraps (ar- ranged by Mr. G. F. Martyn, conductor), played by the band, showed the conduc- tor's fine musical taste. Miss M. H. Collins sang Angus Macdonald very effectively. Spanish march, Los Pica- dores" (George Asch), with castanet accompaniment, by the band was greatly appreciated. Mr. Thos. Pearce did credit to himself in a eornet solo, Cugus Animam (" Stabat Mater "). Madame Hannah Jones sang For all Eternity with marked success. Selection by the band, La Gioeonda" (Pionchelli), ar- ranged by the conductor, was excellently rendered. Bass solo, Mr. Evan Davies, who sang Thus saith the Lord," followed by the aria, But who may abide" ("s Messiah Handel). Intermezzo, Honoria," was played by the band. One special feature of the evening was a descriptive fantasia, The Smithy in the Wood (T. Michelis), the audience being hugely delighted with the introduction of the cuckoo calls, the lark singing, and the cows lowing, and finishing up with the smith working in the wood and the anvil sounding. A quartet, God is a Spirit (Bennett), by the artistes, was excellently rendered. The concluding item on the programme was a chorus by the band, The heavens are telling (Haydn). The proceeds are in aid of the St. John's Improvement Fund. A meeting under the auspices of the National Union of Gasworkers and Greneral Labourers was held at the Imperial Hotel, Porth, on Friday last, Mr. David Evans, Cymmer, in the chair.
