Tonypanay.
Tonypanay. The anniversary services of the English Congregational Church were held on Sunday, the 9th inst., when the Rev. W. Joseph, B.A., B.D., of Bristol, officiated. Three able sermons were preached during the day, and Messrs. H. Rees, E. Gardiner, R. Morgan and Geo. Symmonds rendered the quartets, In Memoriam anu. In the sweet by and bye," in the afternoon and evening meetings respec- tively. The singing of the hymns also was a credit even to Mid-Rhondda. The Rev. W. Joseph, at the evening service, preached a powerful sermon from the Epistle of Paul to the Romans, chapter i., verse 16: For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ," &c. He explained that there were several branches of the Gospel which merited our attention and demanded all our energies to possess them, namely, the Gospel of Sanita- tion and the Housing Problem, &c. All these were good things and part of the Gospel of Christ, but in seeking of them —the branches-we should not lose sight of the "mark of our high calling," Christ Jesus. Mr. Robert Morgan, the well- known baritone, rendered in excellent style the solo, Thou art passing hence," and was accompanied by Mr. Henry Rees. ) The singing of Aberystwyth," under the leadership of the conductor, Mr. Geo. Symmonds, brought a delightful day's services to a close. services to a close. -+-+- Time after time the Taff Vale Railway Company has been appealed to build a station at Tonypandy, but to no purpose. The present unsatisfactory and incon- venient locale of Dinas and Llwynypia was pointed out to them, and the Mid- Rhondda Chamber of Trade exerted itself in an honest and praiseworthy endeavour to secure this boon for the great and growing Mid-Rhondda centre. But all was in vain. There were innumerable obstacles in the way of granting such a demand, such as the lack of a, suitable site, &c.. but now it appears that by some good stroke of fortune these obstacles have either disappeared, or, as is most likely, they never did exist, for prepara- tions are already in hand for constructing a station on the Trealaw side of Trealaw Bridge, the preliminary work being already well in hand, and the whole thing is to be completed (so we're told) in about sixteen weeks. Merci! T.V.R. The Mid-Rhondda Orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr. A. A. Leek, is now disbanded. In order to mark the dis- solution, the committee of the band thought it just and fitting that Mr. Leek's services in the past should be recognised in a fitting manner. This recognition has taken the form of a handsome illuminated address, signed on behalf of the band by each member of the committee. A meet- ing will be held shortly to present Mr. Leek with this address. The Grenadier Guards Band, which was advertised to appear at the Mid-Rhondda Athletic Grounds and the Theatre Royal, on Sunday afternoon and evening respec- tively, having failed to turn up through the command of the King to appear at Buckingham Palace on Monday, an excellent substitute was found in the Band of the Royal Artillery, Plymouth Division (under the conductorship of Mr. R. G. Evans). The performances on the Athletic Grounds and at the Theatre were witnessed by great gatherings, the pro- gramme being in every respect of a very high order. The action of the Bristol United Fur- nishing Co., 34, Pandy Square, is unique. They offer to parties furnishing with them on the easy payment system, that in the event of a fatal accident happening to the breadwinner, they are free to retain the goods without paying another penny. This is indeed a remarkable offer. So remarkable is it, in fact, that we venture to state anyone intending furnishing should go straight to 34, Pandy Square, and get the benefit of this great offer, as it onlv lasts for three months. Further particulars can be seen on the front page.

Cwmparc
Cwmparc Last Sunday and Monday, the local Forward Movement Church held anni- versary preaching services, the Rev. Francis W. Cole, Port Talbot (formerly of Tonypandy), occupying the pulpit. Mr. Cole is possessed of marked oratorical abilities, and his sermons were much enjoyed by large congregations. On Sun- day afternoon, the service was held in Park (C.M.) Chapel (Welsh), which was kindly lent, and it was gratifying to note that the Welsh-speaking element was generous in its patronage. The English cause is making considerable progress, and negotiations are proceeding for a per- manent pastor. This is said to be an age of records," and the remark is full of meaning in view of the cult of the gramophone which has lately been pursued to an extent by some Cwmparcians. This "speaking" inven- tion of the great Edison, ably boomed by the eloquence of dealers in such, has fairly captured the hearts and purses (on the instalment system) of several of our most respected residents, and the evening air invariably vibrates with the strident strains of a comic" or the mysterious manifestations of a hidden "band," affording some justification for the flippant emendation by a London con- temporary of one of the Decalogues: —

Mr. Todd Jones' songs were May Morning," "Galwad y Tywysog," and "Y Deryn Pur," the latter being an encore song. Mr. John Broad favoured the company with Y Dymhestl," Three for Jack," and Soldier Jim," whilst Madame Brunt's contributions were He was despised and Won't you buy my pretty flowers." The duet, Night in Venice," by Miss Cove and Mr. Jones, was received with rapturous applause and demands for encore. Mr. Evans, as accompanist, was excellent, whilst the renderings of The Destruction of Gaza and Comrades by the Party were magnificent. Wattstown. The monthly meeting of the Pontypridd and Rhondda Union of Congregational Churches was held at Carmel, Wattstown, on Tuesday, the 4th inst., Mr. S. Nicholas, Blaenrhondda (in the unavoidable absence of the Rev. J. T. Davies, Cymmer), pre- siding. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, a paper written by the Rev. E. C. Davies, Ynyshir (who was absent), on The place and work of the female members in the Christian Church," was read by the Rev. J. Williams, Hafod. An interesting dis- cussion on the various points arising out of the paper followed, and the Rev. E. C. Davies was heartily thanked for his efforts. In the evening, a sermon was delivered by the Rev. J. Dyfnallt Owen, Pontypridd. The Rev. T. Bryn Thomas, Ferndale, was elected chairman for the next six months. A charming operetta, entitled The Wishing Cap," from the pen of Mr. W. Smyth Cowper, was performed on Thurs- day last by the Calfaria Band of Hope, the proceeds therefrom being devoted to the Band of Hope Fund. The story is a delightful one, the scene being laid in the courtyard of Durden Farm in olden times. The chorus, represents the various farm hands in holiday attire on Michaelmas Eve, bewailing the state of things in general. Eventually they set out in search of the Wishing Cap," and vexatious trials befall some of the party. The characters were well sustained, and the conductor (Mr. David Thomas) is to be complimented on the success attending his efforts. The Rev. 0. J. Owen presided over a very large attendance. On Wednesday, the 5th inst., the funeral took place of Linus Jenkins, whose death occurred a week ago, following an accident sustained on the rubbish tip incline of the National Collieries, where [

Pontygwaith.
Pontygwaith. On Monday last, the Sunday School trip of Soar Welsh Congregational Church took place to Porthcawl, a very miserable day being spent owing to. the bad weather. In the report of the presentation to Mr. D. Vaughan in last week's issue, we omitted to state that Miss S. E. Vaughan was presented by the Band of Hope con- ductor with a beautiful silver dressing- case. -+-+- On Monday evening, the Rev. Evan Jones, Carnarvon, lectured at Seion Welsh Methodist Church on Ideas about the Creation." There was a fair atten- dance, and the lecturer dealt in a very able manner with his subject. -+-+- Last Sunday morning, the pulpit of Soar was occupied by Mr. T. M. Morgans, Bedlinog (Collegiate, Pontypridd). At the communion service, Sunday evening, the Rev. T. Bryn Thomas, Tabernacle, Fern- dale, officiated. -+- We regret to note that the Rev. Joseph Evans, A.C., the highly respected and popular pastor of Soar, is still indisposed, and will he unable to occupy the pulpit for some time. Tonyrefail.
Tonyrefail. On Tuesday evening, the 4th inst., the annual general meeting of the Tonyrefail and Gilfach Goch Electric Light Com- pany, Ltd., was held at Tonyrefail. In the absence of the chairman of directors, Mr. W. T. Rees, Caerphilly, the chair was taken by Councillor W. Evans, J.P., Rhiwinder. Mr. Evans said that the company was in a, sound position, and had a bright future before it. Owing to the increased expenditure during the last year in the extension of mains to Evans- town, Gilfach Goch, the directors did not recommend a greater dividend than 212 per cent. per annum on the ordinary shares. The minutes of the last annual general meeting were read by the secre- tary, Mr. J. Herapath, Post Office, and were approved of. With regard to the reduction of the price of current to con- sumers, the Chairman' said that the directors did not think it expedient to reduce the price at present. The balance sheet and report were adopted. The retiring directors, Messrs. D. Naunton Morgan, Lewis Jenkins, and Wm. James, were re-elected, as also were the auditors, Messrs. Jenkins and Jones, chartered accountants, Westgate Street, Cardiff. The results of the Glamorgan County Council Mining Examinations are just to hand, and we note the following local successes: -First Stage, First Class: Wm. Davies (fifth in the county) and Silas Morgan (seventh in the county); Third Class: David Williams.
