Mr Howell Idris and Compensation to Publicans. An Emphatic Statement. LAST week, a Rhyl contemporary published an ex- tract from a St. Pancras paper giving an account of a social gathering at which was present the Mayor of St. Pancras (Alderman Howell Idris), the Liberal candidate for the Flint Boroughs. As it was rumoured in local circles that Mr Idris's re- marks at the gathering in question pointed to the fact that the speaker was, if anything, in favour of compensation, the editor of the Pioneer com- municated with Alderman Idris on the subject, with the view of ascertaining if the report was correct or not. In the answer he received it will be seen that the candidate's views on the question are clearly and emphatically stated :— Pratt-street, Camden Town, N.W., 2ist December, 1903. Dear Sir,—The version referred to by you of my reply to the toast of the Mayor and visitors at the Licensed Victuallers' dinner is not correct. I enclose another report, which is nearer being correct than the version you refer to It was well known to most, if not the whole of, the audience, that I am, and always was, opposed to compensation from public funds. I will take an early opportunity of reaffirming my statement to the Flint Boroughs Liberal Association, and fully explain my position.— Yours faithfully, T. H. W. IDRIS. The Editor, Pioneer Offices, 7, Bodfor-street, Rhyl. The following extract is from the St Pancras GuardianAlderman Idris, who was warmly cheered, said he found himself in a difficult posi- tion in being addressed as his Worship and the Mayor for the first time at such a gathering. He was proud of the honour done to his old friend, with whom he had passed many difficulties and sorrows, as well as joys. He knew his good qualities and his weak- nesses—(laughter)—better than most, and provided the heart was right it was the weaknesses that bound friends together. He had been much sur- prised and gratified at the magnitude of the affair, and he hoped that in their coming struggle fair play would be dealt all round. 4

North Wales and Manchester Railway Service. A Promising Improvement. IN consequence of a general feeling among travellers between Manchester aud Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, and other Welsh coast towns that the present train service is much slower than it need be, and that the journey might easily be completed in an hour and fifty minutes, Mr Evan Roberts, jun., of Manchester, recently put himself in communication with a large number of holders of contract tickets between these places and the local authorities on the Welsh coast with the object of securing an improvement. The matter was heartily taken up, especially by the Rhyl and Colwyn Bay Councils, and on Tuesday last a petition was presented to the Company asking for an acceleration of the service between Manchester and Llandudno, particularly in connection with the 4-5 p.m. train from Manchester to Llandudno and the 8 a.m. train from Llandudno to Manchester. On Saturday Mr Roberts received a communica- tion from the Company stating It is our desire that you should have the best possible service, and we will see whether we cannot from the first of February arrange for the 4-5 p.m. train from Man- chester to leave at 4-15 p.m., as you suggest, and get into Llandudno about the same time, and also whether we cannot work the 8 a.m. train from Llandudno to Manchester a little quicker." Though the improvement promised is slight, it has given satisfaction to the memorialists as a step in the right direction. Further negotiations, however, are going on by which it is hoped the time may be yet further shortened.
