EDUCATION BILL DEAD. LORDS' AMENDMENTS REJECTED. COMPROMISE FAILS. The House of Lords met at a quarter past four, on Wednesday, to decide the fate of the Education Bill. It was at once made known that the negotiations for a compromise had failed, and the Marquis of Lansdownc, as leader of the Unionist majority. proceeded to take consequential steps. At Monday's sitting the Earl of Crewe, representing the Government, formally moved thai the House should consider the reasons given by the Commons for rejecting the whole of their amendments to the Educa- tion Bill. To this the Marquis of Lansdowne moved an amendment virtually pressing for the whole of the amendments. Wednesday's proceed:gs were the adjourned debate upon these alternative proposals. Tho resolution was adopted by the Lords by a majority of 138 votes to 52. This meanf that the Bill has been rejected. WELSH DEPARTMENT MOOTED.
