Thomas Hughes vaca- ted the chair ijj favour of the Rev. Evan Jones, Uanfairfeehan, the president, who was congra- tulated upon his recent recovery from a some- what serious and prolonged illness. In ad- dress from the chair, the President spoke of the lessons of Wesleyan Methodist history. In the whole history of religion in any country -at any rate, in Wales—there was no instance of so groat and quick a prosperity following tho labours of men of o;iiina.ry talent as that of the pioneers of W elsh Wee ley an Methodism. It was the beginning of a new epoch in the w history of religion in the Principality, and the sucoett; of the nioveiiietiit came mainly from the world that is, through the savmsr of sinners, and not by migrations from other churches- Tho mission entrusted to Wc^leyan Metfxxlisira nj was not a peculiar system of church govern- ment, though it must bo said that the polity of Wesley an Methodism had a great for Waled, but its prosperity was explained by the bestowal of God's blessing upon the particular aspects of truth which the fathers preached to the nation. Methodism had extended' the ilCW of theoiogy in Wales. Though this was a day in vv inch much was tolk<xl of theology, t-horo Wiw a general scarcity of real knowleVlge of theological truth. The religion of Methodism had great and glorious doctrines, WII.r it was highly important that tliey should understand and beheve them. To every religious man a theological belief was a mental necessitv He did not contend that the definition of I he fathers were obligatory upon their descendants; indeed every ago was under a necessity to form its own theology, but every age also wou.kl do well to retain the beet that, was in the old'. It was a sign neither of intelligence nor of honesty to be silent who, tho doctrines of one's church wero be-ing assailed. \VhiJe a great deal was heard nowadays about Christian ethics tho great themes of Chilian the,k>gy seemed to be in a painful measure ignored, and the neces- sity for p.roclai!»ung them was not lessened by the fact that other churches were coining to the Methodist way of thanking. There was everv rea^n why Methodism should retain its indivi- duality a.s a churoa, not bv emieavoniring to be- come like other denonunations. but bv doin<r its best to carry out its own mission- "While oo- opeiating with other denominations, let them 1proat and' ^rioufi differ- ence. In conclusion, the rev. gentleman laid stre*w on giving preaching loremost DIH/O and^he also appealed for more open-a-ir mission A vote of thanks, proposed bv the Rev E Humnhrey seeonded by Mr T. J.
