COTTAGE HOSPITAL SATURDAY. GOOD WORK BY COLWYN DAY LADIES. It i-s very gratifying to learn thai t.bo special appetiji made on behalf of the Cottage Hospital Saturday Fund a.t Colwyn Bay loot Saturday proved successful. As already pointed out in these columns, the resources of the hospital have been very largely dravrn upon during the year, and the institution is growing steadily in usefulness, so that its demands upon the public- purse are legitimately greater. Happily, the puiblio marked thei.r appreciation of tho posi- tion by stibecribing more liberally than ever on Saturday. However, a„s Mr James Wood states in the lei tor appended below, it is to Mr Holmes, the very industrious clerk to the com- mittee, and the ladies and gentlemen who un- dertook the collection that most of the credit is dllle. The following is a list of the collections made in the streets:—Mr Jas. Wood and helpers, £ 9 93 9d; Mrs Lloyd and helpers, j37 2s Id; Miss Ashciroft, nurses and helpers, 1;4 33 lid: Mrs Harold Smith. (To the Editor of the "Pioneer."). Sir,-Yoii will no doubt have an explicit state- ment of the result of Saturday's HosuitaJ col- lections from our excellent and indefatigable clerk, Mr Holmes. May I, however, on behalf of the committee and friends of the hospital generally, thank the collectors for their enthusi- astic and efficient labours. I can hardly im- agine a more trying ordeal for ladies than stand- ing and moving about the streets asking alms through » long day, and I hope they may feel rewarded by the striking success of their efforts. aiii, etc., JAMES WOOD, lIon. FOR WATCHFUL MOTHERS. Messrs Macfailane, Lang and Co., whoso name stands f-w all that is best in Biscuit-land, have just introduced a perfcc ly delicious rich, crisp, biscuit—tho Currant Sandwich—and have thereby earned the gratitude of mothers who are for ever on the watch for something light, palatable, and nutritious with which to appease the out-of-door hunger of healthy little holiday- makers. The biscuit does not break or crumble, and it is so remarkably wholesome and sus- taining that it cannot fail to be in enormous demand.

The Cheshire County Council, on Friday, pur- cha.sed by auction, at Chester, 8S3 acres of land at Ledsham for the purpose of small holdings, the price paid being £ 35,000. The High Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters 011 Tuesday rejected a proposal made by the Executive Council that it should be a condition of the granting of relief to deficiency courts that no siok benefit shûulJ be paid to members entitled to compensation under the Workmen's Compensation Act. A residuary bequest of about £ 80,000 is made to the National Gallery in tno will of the late M.r Martin Colnaghi. A picturesque and somewhat pathetic cere- mony took place at Welshpool on Tuesday, when the. officers, non-commissioned officers, anil men of the disbanded 4th Battalion South Wales Borderers (Militia) handed over their colours to be deposited in St. Mary's Parish Church. The top hat is not much more ugly than another hat. And, above all, it is not uglier than the rest of our masculine costume.—"Jour- nal dee Debata."
