CRUELTY TO CATTLE. Thomas Scott, 24, an unlicensed drover, of Ann-street, Pentonville-road, was charged, at the Clerkenwell Police- court, London, with cruelly beating a bullock, at the Metropolitan Cattle Market, with a stick. Two officers of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals stated that they found a bullock tied to the rails of the Cattle Market in Caledonian-road. Because it did not stand still the defendant beat it in a most savage manner about the face and head with a thick stick. On being remonstrated with, he, with an oath, said he was not hurting the animal, and beat it again. The officers then gave him into custody. The defendant admitted having hit the bullock on the head, and said it was wild." It was stated that the defendant's licence to act as a drover had already been taken away from him in con- sequence of drunkenness and cruelty. The magistrate said the men who had to do with cattle at the market were shamefully callous in the way they treated the animals. They acted as if cattle had no feelings what- ever. Perhaps the defendant would think differently if the stick he had used was applied to his own person. He gduld not give the defendant the option of a fine, bat would sentence him to fourteen days' hard labour.
