The Art of Dress-cutting Taught in a few Easy Lessons by the SCIENTIFIC SYSTEM OF DRESS-CUTTING. O little progress has been made in XL the Art of Dressmaking in this \Jj country, that we naturally ask our- selves what is the cause of this selves what is the cause of this deplorable failure, especially since those engaged in it are compelled each year to acknowleuge that the Knglish ladies Rive their patronage more and more to foreign modistes. In cases where this is the exception, it is among those ladies whose means will not permit this luxurious indulgence, therefore they accept the ser- vices of the English Dressmaker in con- sequenceof this inability, while their pre- ference is strongly in favour of the foreign robe. It is the duty of the English Dress- makers to learn the causc of this evil which robs them of their most lucrative patronage, and there seems to be no more effectual method in overcoming it than to Icarn to compete with these foreign rivals. In most branches of science and industry England haQ always maintained a leading position. Why. then, in a point so vital to her, and where so much capital is ex- Eended, will she permit a foreign rival to ear the palm of victory ? Elegance and refinement in dress have become so much a study by ladies in these days that all that art and grace can do for them is called into requisition. It is in these points, therefore, we know we are rivalled abroad Else why are foreign modistes patronised in preference to our own Dressmakers? All ladies know when the Dress arrays their figure to the best advantage, and the I Dressmaker knowi that the first and I ,10 t irncsrtant step i. to learn to cut the h,r. correctly. To do this one must study pro- portions. For manv years Dressmakers have used nothing tetter than CHART' or models for cutting, each one of which is utterly imperfect in principle, as a little careful reasoning would convince them. In the first place, charts cut the shape for every figure, measuring "e same size bust. The fallacy of this idea is apparent when you consider that per- sons measuring the same SI7E bt: are rarely, if ever, shaped alike. Consequently, garments cut on these principle; ',) not fit the figure for which they are intended. Land a great amount of valuable time is consntned in pinningand retackinc. "], '.ire convincing proofs of the ir.T.ti'.VY the methods usually •employed. Vet, v.hen you also percoive that by taking np a seam here, and LETTING one out i" another 1" you have thrown the seams cut of all pro- portion, and utterly destroyed any grace the dress might have POSSESSED; you ought then to be assured of the necessity of a true and correct method of cutting, which \ould save yen th: vr-sted til1'; and miserable re-uVts. All good cuttcrs know that a bad; ru. garment can never be made to fit wei'. By this system cf Cutting, which IS upon mathemati- cal principles, and "ill enable one to nt every figure perfectly without alteration, you can arrive at every point that consti- tutes an accurate fit with certainty. Ladies with irregular forms can be fitted with the same ease and certainty as those with perfect proportions, and. this cannot be done by any other method of cutting. Its adaptability to all changes of style, or variations in r: ;,1 makes thi- system an enduring advantage to the Dressmaker, and its comprehensive use will place her on an equal footing with the Continental modistes in the Art of Dress Cutting. Ladies art discovering that there is science in Cutting a Dress. The time has passed when the Dretstnakir must try on the garment 10 see if it fits for with this system of calculation there can be no failure. Testimonial from a few English Ladies who have tested the Scientific System of Dress Cutting. the undersigned ladies, having learned the Scientific Systrm of Dress Cutting, take great pleas'u- :r. .ccn- mending the same to the ladies of our country, as we have proved its practicability and accuracy by many E have NI:V-I yet failed to obtain a perfect fit when the instructions are iol!o'.ved. which are so simple t).t a chil' :r 'it and tit by d1.11 as well AS an adult; and we are sure that any lady who may learn this system v. ill never regret the v. %t- ment she has f1':c.de. as the saving of m:1mial alone upon a few garments will more than pay for the .¡>:Tn. :,c" the Afsuraiu-e and Sulisfuriion of always having a perfect fitting garment.—Mrs. L'hillipson, 3, Colvilii- SQUARE Tcr-aee, Baysw.ter, W.; Mrs. Malcolm, 40, Carlton Hill, St. John's \Vood, N.W.; Mrs. Smythe, 37, Blenheim Cres., KOTTI: Hill, NN' Mrs. Winton, 67, Bessboro' Street, Pimlico, S.W.; Miss Lang, in, ICdgwareRoad, W.
