The Art of Dress-cutting Taught in a few Easy Lessons by the SCIENTIFIC SYSTEM OF DRESS-CUTTING. O little progress has been made in the Art of Dressmaking in this Wj country, that we naturally ask our- V selves what is the cause of this deplorable failure, especially since those engaged in it are compelled each year to acknowledge that the Englir-h ladies give their patronage more and more to foreign modistes. In cases where this is the exception, it is among those ladies whose means will not permit this luxurious indulgence, therefore they accept the ser- vices of the English Dressmaker in con- sequenceof this inability, while their pre- ference is strongly in favour of the foreign robe. It is the duty of the English Dress- makers to learn the cause of this evil which robs them of their most lucrative patronage, and there seems to be no more effectual method in overcoming it than to learn to compete with these foreign rivals. In most branches of Scicnce and industry England has always maintained a leading position. Why, thCl1, in a point ,;0 -it,! to her, and where so much capital is ex. pended, v. Ill she permit a foreign rival to bear the p aill- of victory ? Elegance and refinement in dress have become so much a study by ladies in thei-e days that all that art and grace can do for them is called into requisition. It is in these points, therefore, we know we are rivalled abroad Else why are foreign modistes patronised in preference to our own Dressmakers ? All ladies know when the Dress arrays in preference to our own Dressmakers ? All ladies know when the Dress arrays their figure to the best advantage, and the Dre-smaker knows t,i athe • :,¡); toicr-r: i'v To do this 0:Cc :r.-ir.t ] Ol ;>:any Dr-a. have used nothing better than chjrtv. er model; for cutting, each one of which is utterly imperfect in principle, a iitile careful reasoning would cor vines t'nerr. In the first place, Iarls cut the same shape for every figure, meus rin^ liie same size bust. The fallacy ci this i h is apparent when you consider that per- sons measuring the same size bust are rarely, if ever, shaped alike. Consequently, garmentr- cut on these principles 'do not tit the figure for which they are inu-n.r.-d, and a great amount of valuable tiir.e is consumed in pinning and rctacki:-1, which are convincing proofs of the inutility of the methods usually employed. Vet, v. h: you also perceivethr.t' y '.al.hignp a ser r.i ilere, and letting one out in another p]:v •••en have thrown Use seams out of all p ro- portion, and utterly destroyed any g see the dress mi«4w» haye poassiised; ) 0'-1 ought then to ire assured of the necessity of a true ",1d correct method of cutt'n; which would save you tb: wafted time and miserable results. All good cutters know that a badly cut garment can nevr be made to fit well. By this system of Cutting, which is based upon mathemati- cal principles, and will enable one to Lt every figure perfectly without alter.ti.—i, vou can arrive at every point that consti- tutes an accurate fit with certainty. Ladies with irregular forms can be fitted with the same ease and certainty as those with perfect proportions, and. this cannot be done by any other method of cutting. Its adaptability to all changes of style, or variations in form makes this system an enduring advantage to the Dressmaker, and its comprehensive use \vill place her on an equal footing with the Continental modistes in the Art of Dress Cutting. Lt-ats art discovering inat there is scimce ili Cutting a Dress. The. time has passed when the Dressmaker n:u:t tr\ o t t i. e garment to see If -1 t ji ts for with this system of calculation there can be no failure. ^Testimo-ii?] from a few English Ladies who have tested the Scientific System of Dress Cutting. Y? ed ladies, having learned the Scientific System cf Dress Cutting, take great pleasure in recorn- mending the same to the ladies of our country, as we_ have proved its practicability and accuracy by many tests, and we have never-et hiicc1 to obtain a perfect fit when the instructions are followed, which are so simple, that a child ca: cut and fit by thm as well as an adult; and weare sure that any lady who may learn this system willnever regret the invest- ment "he his as the saving of material alone upon a few garments will more than pav for the System, beside the Assurance and Sa.tsjacltott of always having a perfect fitting garment.—Mrs. Phillipson. 3, Colvilie'Sciuare Terrace, Malcolm, 40, Carlton Hill, St. John's Wood, N.W.
