VESTRYMEN MILITANT. On Tuesday evening, at the meeting of the St. Luke's vestry, Churchwarden Stubbs in the chair, Mr. Memory rose to ask a series of questions relating to the dismissal of the sanitary inspector, when the chairman said that, as the board had already decided that in the public interest they should not be answered, he must rule Mr. Memory out of order. Mr. Memory exclaimed that at the last meeting the Chairman used his office to vent party apleen against him. (Cries of "Oh oh and wit raw).Mr. Memory: 111 withdraw the worda if they are offensive to the Vestry. (Hisses, and cries of Withdraw. ")-The' ,Chq- If the worda are not 'unconditionally withdrawn I'll leave Ihe chair, and ask you to mark your sense of his conduct. -General Moberly: Forty or fifty years ago such words would not be uaed, for men had then to back their worde.-blr. Memory I can back my worda. (Hear, hear.)-General Moberly: You should back your words in another way, for you would then have V1 fight a duel with the Chairman. (" Hear, hear," fnd laughter,) We have given up the custom, Ind I am glad of it"; knowing that the use of inch language ia cowardly in the extreme. ("Hear, hear," and cheers.) Ultimately, on the motion of Mr. Howea, a resolution was carried protesting against the language, and expressing a belief that Mr. Memory did not fully realise the meaning of the words he had uttered. Mr. Memory here cried out, amid much disorder, that he would never move a reso- lution whilst Mr. Stubba was in the chair, and he did not care twopence for the Vestry

SINGULAR ACTION FOR COMMISSION. In the Queen's Bench Division, before Mr. ^^tice Wills and a common jury, an action has beei^Kd iu which Richard Banner Oakley, the manfger of the lEolus Water-Spray General Ventilating Com- pany, sued Messrs. Robert Boyle and Son, the patentees of the self-acting air-pump ventilators, for a sum of money as commission. The plaintiff is the Richard Banner Oakley, who, in 1876, at the Old Bailey, was convicted of the Co-operative Bank frauds, and sentenced to five years' penal servi- tude. When he emerged from prison he secured the appointment of traveller for the defendants at a salary of £ 3 per week, under the name of Robert Oakley, and his references were Sir John Monckton, the Town Clerk of London, and Mr. Cartwright, a well known City solicitor, both of whom wrote letters in his favour, the latter speaking of him as strictly honest, and with plenty of energy," Afterwards the plaintiff became manager of the defendant's London office at 1:3 per week and 1 per cent. as commission. This terminated in September, 1X82, and the present action was brought to recover the commissions. The defendants pleaded that by sup- pressing his real name the plaintiff entered their ser- vice by fraud. Further, tney put forward a counter claim for damages sustained by reason of Oakley neglecting their interests while promoting another agency. His lordship, in giving judgment, said as to the morals of the case he would express no opinion. The correspondent adds: The Canadian voya- peurs say that the boats which have been built for the expedition are not nearly strong enough in their construction for the work for which they are intended. They are of opinion also that it was a threat mistake building them with keels. They pro- nounce the navigation df the Nile as not particularly dangerous, but as being exceptionally laborious and trying. The Nile is falling rapidly. During yesterday and to-day it has fallen 2ft. This has greatly altered the aspect of the river. It has greatly decreased the volume and force of the.stream in the rapids and has much facilitated their ascent. Upon the other hand, m places where the river before ran quietly and tmoothly, it now rushes in broken water over shallows, And has thus increased the number of rapids indefi- nitely. Two new and formidable cataraets-have made their appearance during the last two days between this place and Sarras. The men are loud in their praises of the work and skill of the Canadians, and, indeed, without their direotion, ooolness, and skill I it would be altogether impossible to get the boats up the Nile. Should any of them attempt to make the passage without one of these professional boatmen at tht helm, a disaster will almost certainly take place

SELLING OLD COINS. In the Queen's Bench Court, on Tuesday, Mr. Jus- tice Denman heard the suit of "Frendenburg and Another v. Chaffers," which arose out of the sale of a collection of old coins. The case for the plaintiff was that the collection wae made-by a German clergyman, who, by his will, left this condition, that the coins should be sold in one lot, and by private contract; and the value waa said to be £ 500. The plaintiffs were brothers, one in buaineaa in Germany, and the other in London and they were consulted at the latter end of 1883 *f to the sale of the coins. They .7 ia their turn spoke to Mr. Witt& and Mr. Dieii- pecker, and became introduced to the defendant, a dealer in antiquities, to whom the collec. tion of coins waa handed. It was said that the -7" &18f8lldant wu to sell the same in one lot, and c: for not leta than M and that he had neither done this nor returned the coins. He had, in fact, caused them to be sold by auction, where they realised less than £100. The defence was that the defendant did L not get- his instructions from the plaintiffs, but that r, Witte introduced Diespccker, and the latter inst rue- si tedJriafcjto catalogue the coins, and have them sold by c- prblio auction. Mr. Justice Denman gave credence to the story told by the plaintiffs, and thought that it was cor- roborated by the correspondence. Upwards of 30 unacka arrived at Hull on Tues day. Ten of them have loat all their fishing-gear in the recent stoma. The Young Greg was boarded in the North Sea, and only the cook was found on board. Four of the crew are missing, and it is supposed that they have been drowned. Two men named Webb and Lee, who had been concerned m an affray at Rushmere, near Ipswich, made their escape from the police under extraordinary circumstances while being conveyed to Woodbridge. Both men were in a cart with their captors, and were handcuffed together. They suddenly made a desperate jump, literally throwing a somersault over the head a of the policemen. Both fell to the ground, but were soon up again, apparently unhurt, and before the constables could get down were well away. The Cape Premier and the Treasurer-General have left Cape Town for Bechuanaland, hoping to effect a peaceful settlement.
