RUSSIA'S BLACK SEA FLEET. An Odessa correspondent writes: The Govern- ment are energetically prosecuting their projpet for the rapid creation of a Black Sea war fleet. In the construction of the armour-plated war frigate at Xicolaidf, the Katherine II., which is fast approach- ing completion, 100,000 poods of steel have already been used, and 700 workmen are engaged upon her. The keel of another armour-plat d frigate, of similar dimensions to the Kalherinc I L, will be laid immediately the latter vessel leaves the stocks. Two other war vessels will be built at the saint: time. The construction of the Tchisme and Sinope at Sebastopol is similarly being pressed forward. The Russian Black Sea Steamship Company, whose vessels have hitherto been built in England, now con- template the construction of two additions to their fleet in Black Sea ports.

STRUGGLE WITH A BURGLAR. Two men named Stokes and Ruby were charged be- fore the Birmingham police magistrates on Monday with burglariously breaking into a glove shop. Stokes havlllg posted a. couple of confederates to watch, broke a bole in the shutters, and smashed a pane of glass in the front door, and so got access to the premises in question. Mrs. Dufferin, who resides in some neighbouring premises, hearing the noise ran into the street just in time to see Stokes coming out through the broken shutter. She seized and held him so firmly by the coat, that in struggling to escape he tore it half off his back. Just as he broke away a police-sergeant came upon the scene and gave chase, and the prisoner was ultimately stopped and captured with the assistance of the public. Ruby was seen speaking to Stokes through the shutters of the shop he had entered, and was arrested as a suspected accom- plice. Both men were remanded.

DEATH OF A CRIMEAN HEROINE. Mr. C. C. Lavis, the coroner for South Essex, has held an inquest touching the death of Elizabeth Vickery, aged öü, an army pensioner. Joseph Page V i-kery, a stevedore's labourer, said the deceased was his stepmother, her husband, John Macintosh Pickery, now being an inmate of the county lunatic ylurn. The deceased went through the Crimean war with her husband, Robert Patrick, a private ia the Coldstream Guards. The deceased up to her received a pension on this account of 2s. fjd. a The jury returned a verdict of death from io''ural causes. In reply to the coroner, lr.
