A RIDE.—In the present day it ia possible to leave London at a quarter-past five in the morning and to be in York at a quarter to ten. How different this ia to the most expeditions mode of travelling at the close of the last century, the following anecdote will shewIn 1796, a cele- brated highwayman, named Nicks, stopped a gentle- man at Gad's hill, Kent, at about four o'clook in the morning, and robbed him. Nicks had reason to be- lieve, however, that his victim knew him, and at once, therefore, hastened away. He made for Gravesend, where he lost a whole hour in waiting for the ferry boat. On reaching the Essex coast he proceeded to Huntingdon, and then taking the northern road he hastened to York, and appeared on a bowling-green there in the evening. When Nicks was subeequently tried for the robbery, many witnesses proved that they had actually seen him there, and the jury be. lieving it impossible that he could have been in two auch distant places on the same day immediately acquitted the prisoner. ♦

A FORTUNE FROM A FLOWER. The gorgeous dahliaa which so brilliantly ornament gardens, and are so effectively used in decorations, are of Mexican origin. They were first introduced into Germany by Dahl; their name was then Bidens Magnifica afterwards they were called dahlias, in honour of the man who found them. They were, when discovered, quite single, having only one ray of petals about a golden disc; the colours were scarlet, yellow, and white, the latter being dis- tinct from the others, having smaller flowers, and being of a dwarf habit, with leaves much divided and fernlike in character. The English were the first to attempt the doubling of the dahlia, which was prized by royalty, and so jealously guarded that those in charge of them were sworn to secrecy as to their cul- tivation it was considered a great privilege even to 8ee them growing. In a few years semi-double flowers appeared, and ultimately the perfect double dahlia was obtained, which sold for five guineas a plant. One grower netted £26,000 in two years from his crop. ♦

FACTS AND FANCIES. A PRETTT STORY.—Of an iron egg in the Berlin Museum the following story is told Many years ago a prince became affianced to a lovely princess, to whom he promised to send a magnificent gift as a testimonial of his affection. In due time the messenger arrived bringing the promised gift, which proved to be an iron egg. The princess was so angry to think that the prince should send her so valueless a present that she threw it upon the floor, when the iron egg opened, dis- closing a silver lining. Surprised at such a discovery, she took the egg in her hand, and while examining it closely disoovered a secret spring, which she touched, and the silver lining opened, disclosing a golden yolk. Examining it closely, she found another spring, which, when opened, disclosed within the folded yolk a ruby crows. Subjecting that to an examination, she touched a spring, and forth came the diamond ring with which he affianced her to himself. ♦

WORKING CLASS HOLIDAYS. 4 In France, Sundays and fite days cause a chomate, M cessation of labour, amounting during the year to 100 days. In Russia there are 24 holidays in addition to Sundays, making in all 76 non-working days. In Greece the number of church festivals kept as strict festivals is so great as to leave only 265 working days in the year, added to which there are 195 fast days, on which, however, work is carried on. The working classes of Austria have 76 whole holidays, which in the provinces are still more numerous. In Brussels, including Saint Monday, the average of working days is estimated at only 286, although the official holi- days are not more than 65. The Swiss working classes have, in addition to religions festivals, to put up with a certain number of drill and field days until they are 28 years of age, and in some can- tons 34. In England the holidays and non-work- ing days are as follows: Sundays, 52; bank holi- days 4 half holidays on Saturday, equal 26 —total, 82 days. If to this be added the half of Saint Mon- day, as is often the case, 26 more days must be put down to the acoount, making in all 108 days in the year. ♦

ORIGIN OF THE NAMES OF NATIONS. The names of nations are derived principally from ¡ some peculiar cause or object. For instance, Ireland —which Julius Casar 'first called Hibernia—is a kind of modification of Erin, or the country of the west. Scotland, from Scotia, a tribe which originally came from Ireland. It was aneiently called Caledonia, which means a mountainous country—forests and lands. Portugal, the ancient Lusitania, was so named from a town on the river Douro, called Cale, opposite ¡' to which the inhabitants built a oity called Porto or Oporto. And when the country was recovered from the Moors the inhabitants combined the words and called it the Kingdon of Portucale—hence Portugal. Spain, the ancient Iberia, from the river Iberius or Hispania, from the Phoenician Spaniga, which sig- nifies abounding with rabbits, which animals are very numerous in that country—hence Spain. France, from the Franks, a people of Germany, who con- quered that country. Its ancient name was Celta, Gaul, or Galiia. Barechatta, the latter signifying striped breeches, which were worn by the natives. Switzerland, the ancient Helvetia, was so named by the Austrians, who called the inhabitants of these mountainous countries Schweitzer?. Italy received its present name fiom a renowned prince called Itaiua. It was called Hesperia, from its western locality. )1 Holland, the ancient Batavi, a, warlike peopJe, was so named from the German word the English of 1 •vhich is "holiow, implying a very low country. The inhabitants are called Dutch, from the German ■uisch or teutsck. Sweden and Norway were an. t-atly called Scandinavia, which the moderm anti- larians think means acountry and woods, which have een burned or destroyed.
