He thereupon severed his connection with the firm of Waiter Macfarren and Co., and offered himself for re-election, but was opposed by Mr. Charles Dairyrxiple, the former member, who defeated him. His return on the present occasion makes no differ- ence in the balance of political parties.

WEST GLOUCESTERSHIRE ELECTION. On Wednesday the result of the polling in the West Gloucestershire electijn was declared as follows Mr. B. St. John Ackers (Conservative) 4,837 Sir Wm. Marling, Bart. (Liberal). 4,426 Majority 411 At the general election in 1880 Colonel Kingsoote (L beral) was returned at the head of the poll with 5,311; votes. Lord Moreton (Libera.), who was also elected, received 5,164; whilst Mr Plnnkett (Conser- vative), who was defeated, obtained 4.(340 votes. At the election in February, 1874, Mr. Plunkett was re- turned as senior member, in conjunction with Cuiotiel Kingscote. Mr. BeujaminSt. John Ackers, of Prinknash Park, near Painswick, Gloucestershire, and Pri,ice of Wales s-teirace, London, is the only sui viving son d the late Mr, James Ackers, formerly M.P. for Ludlow. He was born in 1839, and was educated at Rugby and at St. John's College, Oxm rci, and was called to the Bar by the Hen. Society of Lineoln'c-inn in May, 18(55, but has never practised. Mr. Ackers, who is a magistrate and deputy lieutenant for the county, unsuccs s-fuily contested the city of Gloucester in the Conservative interest at the General Election of Aprii, 1 ".)0. He is the 125th new member returned to tho present House of Commons, ai J his election on the present occasion is a gain of a -eat, counting two votes on a division to the Opposition. —

STRUGGLE WITH AN ARMED MADMAN, A man named Donald Brown, who had been in the Coldstream Guards, was on Tuesday charged at Dnver with wandering about in an unsound state of mind. Brown, who behaved in a very excited manner in the dock, said he had been sent to destroy the earth. It appears that he went to a local clergyman's house and said hI; had come to breakfast. He got into the kitchen and refused to leave. He struggled violently, and got into thn dining-room, where they kept him while a constable was fetched. In the meantime he armed himself with a sword foil, which was hanging over the mantelpiece. When the policeman entered the mad- man threatened him, and a severe struggle ensued before he could be handcuffed, the furniture in th° room sustaining a great deal of dam.ine in the melte. At the | olice cells he stripped himself Mid quoted Scripture and sang hymns in a lou voice all night. He was ordered to be removed to the County Lunatic Asylum.
