REMINISCENCES OF GORDON.
REMINISCENCES OF GORDON. At the meeting of the Church Missionary Society, under the presidency of the Biahop of Exeter, the Rev. J. R. Lingley Hall, the society's secretary in Palestine, gave some intereating reminiscences of General Gordon, whom he described as taking part at Jaffa in missionary work at the end of 1883. The General made plans for the society's missionary house, and Mr. Hall spoke of Gordon's > great disappointment at the Government so willingly giving permiasion to his employment by the King of the Belgians when his heart yearned for em- ployment in Egypt. Mr. Ball described General Gordon's leaving Jaffa with a mysterious Frenohman in December, 1883, his landing at Genoa, owing to bad weather, on December 31, and his travel- ling on New Year's Eve by train across the Conti- nent and spending the whole night in prayer on the dawn of the, to him, momentous year 1884. He said that he remembered by name 200 or 300 people daily in prayer, and would, when his own master, never be disturbed till noon at his devotions. Mr. Hall read several letters he had received from General Gordon from Khartoum, in one of which he said, "What strange contradictory beings we are. I keep saying Is God's hand shortened ?' and again, There is no way of There is nothing left for me, to pre- vent my speaking evil of every one and not trusting my dear Lord, but death."
WATER FAMINE IN EGYPT. !
WATER FAMINE IN EGYPT. A Cairo telegTam states that owing to the very low state of the Nile the sea haa encroached several miles up the river banks towards Rosetta, and the consequences have become most serious. The Egyp- tian Government is sending fresh water by train and boat for the inhabitants. An eye-witness says: The want of a supply of fresh water to this important town has undoubtedly assumed a most serious aspect. The Nile water is salt and undrink- able for some miles above Kosetta. The water in the wells and sakeeyehs is equally unfit for con- sumption. The only drinking water obtainable is that stored in the cisterns, which is of a very good quality, but of such limited quantity as not to suffice for a fortnight's need of the population, even if it were placed on a small daily allowance. Some boatmen bring brackish water from a point 10 miles above Rosetta, which they sell at 5d. per skin. The cattle are dying, it is believed, from the effeots of drinking the salt water. The lands in the neighbour- hood, where cotton and rice are cultivated, having been irrigated with this water, are already shewing signs that the vegetation is suffering from its effects. Women are met returning from the outskirts with thf jars empty, having failed to obtain fresh water." There is no hope of fresh water coming down the Nile until the end of July.
A HIDEOUS EXPERIENCE.
A HIDEOUS EXPERIENCE. An officer of the Soots Guards, who, at the time of writing, had recently returned to Suakim from the advance against Tamai, gives a shooking account of the appearance of the held some days after the fLht at M'Neill's zareba. He says "We marched L. ck (from Tamai) to the zareba that night, and bi ouacked amongst the corpses outside, which, t v.gh buried, asserted their presence in the moat I": way. Next day we marched back to Siv-kiin; never alain, as I hope, to see M'Neill's za r a. Tom Cringle 1 ought to have been there to p, adequately the horrors of that six miles' march. n going from Suakim the last three miles of tin march were marked at every step by graves, A: b and Indian, so shallow that from all oozed dark rr • hideous stains, and from many protruded mangled f- hV.i stripped grinning skulls, or ghastly hands, st' •'= relied in the death agony, though reducea to more than bone and sinew. Strewed around th:,k2r and thicker, as we neared the scene of that Sue-jay's fight, lay the festering bodies of camels and mmes and round them hopped and fluttered, scai u- moving when our column pasaed, hundreds of kite- and vultures. The ground waa also thickly sown v. it.'i hands and feet dragged from their graves by the hyienas, and the awful stench and reek of carrion v,ich loaded the air will never be forgotten ps I th:ic, by any of Uli. Day after day we passed and repassed over the same sickening scene with our convoys, ill blinding dust and under a scorching sun, obliged to move at a font's pace to keep up with the weary camels, and to pick our stepa carefully for fear of juddeuiy setting foot on one of those dreadful heal s of corruption. I have not exaggerated the least tÍJe horrors of that awful road."

GRANTS TO HIGHLAND SCHOOLS.I
GRANTS TO HIGHLAND SCHOOLS. An important minute on additional grants to High- land schools has been prepared by the Scotch Educa- tion Department and laid on the table of the I'n.fe of Commons. Exceptional treatment of schools the Highlands has oeen rendered nece^sai} heavy burden laid on certain localities, in wb ch the School Boards have been compelled to establish numerous small schools to meet the wants of a thin and widely-scattered population. In many parishes the school rate exceeds 2s. in the a d in others it is as high as 4s. and os. On the other hand, the sohuol fees are exceptionally low. In all the schools under 16 separate boards the fee averages only l.'s, 8d. per head per aiiMim. The grants e<.in-.d are also low, owing to the irregular attendance ;.f thexluldrefi. The counties to which the new miLt¡! e is intended to apply are Inverness, Argyll, Ross, Sutherland, Caithness, and Orkney and Shetland. T II an explanatory statement accompanying the minute their, lordilhips say that their objeei has been not only to help financial d fficultiep, but also" to afford an educational stimulus, and to promote efficiency of the schools in lit. districts relieved. They have therefore r. solved t make the additional grant depend ii ainlv on t avetage attendance. The preseot ou attend- ance is 4s. it is to rise by four stages of Is. each for f erjr J percent, of average attendance fTon: ( cenc. the sjnu. will-b»-doubled. Their lordships poir-t (.t, tha< in proportion av this grwit raises the avern^i- atwnl- anee, the ordinary grant on examinati":) n- also. Two. other objects which the minute in are the encouragement of higher education acid the provision of Gaelic-speaking teachers.
