THE ROYAL VISIT TO INDIA.
THE ROYAL VISIT TO INDIA. The Prince of Wales arrived early on Saturday morning at Brindisi, where he was received by Admiral di San Bon, the Italian Minister of Marine, and obtained a hearty welcome from the people who had assembled near the railway ter- minus. His Royal Highness and suite went at once on board the Serapis. Breakfast was served, and shortly before noon the Serapis steamed out of the harbour, escorted by the Italian ironclads and saluted by two of her Majesty's ships. The Prince arrived at Athens on Monday morn- ing. On landing with his brother-in-law, King George, who had gone on board to meet him, his royal highness was received with much popular enthusiasm, the streets being thronged with people, and the town, as well as the ships the in harbour, being decorated with flags. The Prince left Athens on Wednesday afternoon, having had an enthusiastic welcome and many expressions of sympathy from the Greek nation. The Prince, accompanied by the King, went for a drive on Monday afternoon. His Royal High- ness occupied the place of honour by the side of the Queen. In the evening the ancient monu- ments were brilliantly illuminated, and the whole of the Acropolis was lighted up with Bengal fires. The Prince, their Majesty's and Royal family, were present. There was an immense crowd of spectators. The King gave a State dinner in honour of the Prince, at which Vice Admiral Drummond, the Hon. W. Stuart, the British Minister, and Mrs Stuart, and the members of the British Legation were present. On Tuesday morning the Prince, accompanied by his suite, went to spend the day at the Royal country seat, of Tatoi Chareau.1

Live beyond your means, and you will soon fiad it beyond your means to live. The election for Armagh city took place on Monday, with the following result:—Beresford (C), 278; Kaye (L), 247. Mr W. H. Gladstone, M.P., and the Hon. Mrs Gladstone have left Cliveden, the Duke of Westminster's seat, near Maidenhead, for Hawarden Castle, Flint- shire. On Friday morniug the Rev John Robinson, of Woolhampton, Berks, unhappily stumbled as he was descending at Messrs Cassell, Petter, and' Galpin's Printing Works,- Bride-lane, London, and fell to the bottom. On being taken up it was found that his neck was broken and his skull badly fractured, so that he shortly afterwards expired. The health of Thomas Wainwright, who was last week committed for trial for being accessory to the murder of Harriet Lane, has broken down under the anxiety caused by the long examination into the case before the police magistrates. His illness prevented the removal of himself and brother to the gaol of Newgate for a few days. It is announced that the Great Western Railway htve entered into negotiations for the purpose of taking over 4 the undertaking of the Bristol and Exeter Railway, on the basis of paying the proprietors G per cent. for the next seven years, and 6t per cent. in perpetuity; Bristol and Exeter stock has gone up considerably in con- sequence of the probability that the atrangement will be carried out. The Home Secretary on Saturday received an address from the Edinburgh Working Men's Conservative Association, wherein he was thanked for his exertions on behalf of the working classes. Mr Cross, in reply, referred to the satisfactory manner in which several acts passed last session were adapting themselves to the interests of the people. He defended Government against the charge of submissive" legislation, and stated that the commission appointed to inquire into the operation of the labour laws was not intended, as some said, to be an expedient to shelve this question. The formation of a public opinion among working men was strongly urgdd, and, in conclusion, the speaker expressed his belief that the advance of education and the improve- ment of dwellings would cause an immense change for the better in tho condition of the masses. THE TU-VNEL SCHEME UNDER THE MERSEY.—Mr W, Williams, a member of the Liverpool Town Council, is making arrangements for a public meeting in the month of November, at which he will explain his plans for the construction of a tunnel between Liverpool and Birken- head, and the consequent more direct railway communica- tion with North Wales. The scheme is for the sinking of an iron subway in a groove to b3 cut in thj bed of the Mersey of sufficient diameter to admit the ordinary rail- way carriages. The cast iron tubes will in no case be less than 2t inches in thickness, and it is contended that the tunnel can be formed at a cost considerably below that of the construction of an ordinary tunnel. Starting from ITontenoy-street in Liverpool, with an intermediate station at the Exchange, and, passing under the Prince's Landing-stage, the line would touch the opposite shore at Seacombe (whence a short line would run,-to New Brighton), thence under the Great Float, through. Birkenhead by Heswall, under the Dee to Bagillt. whe.e it is possible a junction might be effetted with the Chester and Holyhead line. Fro:n Bacilli it is proposed to run eastward by Flint and Connai^s Quay and br Hawarden to join the Mold Branch Railway. The liighfc Hon. W. E. Gladstone has, we understand, expressed his opinion that a tunnel under the Mersey would be of great importance to Liverpool and Birkenhead, and has inti- mated that if the concurrence of those who have a pro- prietary interest in the land und in the mining and quarrying industries of North Wales can be obtained, he shall be willing, sometime in the ensuing month, tOo attend the public meeting over which Li,-ul,Coloael Steble, the present jMayor of Liverpool, has promised to preside, < MANUFACTURE OF Cocok.-Il We will now give all. account of the process adopted by Messrs James Epps- and Co., manufacturers of dietetic articles, at their worse in the Euston-road, London."—See article in CasselVt Household Guide. 6721 STEDMAN'S TEETHING POWDER.-lrs Hughes, of Beechfield, Poulton-ie-Fylde, Lancashire, writes L have used your teething powders regularly for nearly two years, and i-n no single instance have I found them, fail. No words of mine can half express the confidence I have in them, nor convey any idea of the great value and comfort they have been to me and many other mothers to whom I have recommended them." VALUABLE DISCOVERY FOR THE HAIR.—If your hair is turning grey or white, or falling off, use The Mexican Hair Renewer." for it will positively restore in every case Grey or White hair to its original colour, without leaving the disagreeable smell of most Re- storers." It makes the hair charmingly beautifnl, as well as promoting the growth of the hair on bald, spots, where the glands are not decayed. Ask your Chemist for the MEXICAN HAIR RENEWES," prepared by Henry C. GALLUP, 493, Oxford-street, London, and sold by Chemists and Perfumers every- where at 3s Gd per bottle. EPPS'S COCOA.—GRATEFUL AXD COMFORTING.— By a thorough knowledge of the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutri- tion, and by a careful application. of the fine pro- perties of well-selected cocoa, Mr Epps has provided our breakfast tables with a delicately flavoured beverage which may save us many heavy doctor*' bills. It is by the judicious use of such articles of diet that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to dis- ease.
