DRESSMAKING AT HOME.
DRESSMAKING AT HOME. By SYLVIA. A Simple Morning Hown. The very neat model shown in my first sketch —No. 1,706-will, I think, appeal to the young matron as an excellent one for morning wear, during the time when she may not be able t. wear anything more fitting. It is, how- ever, a pattern which can c<paliy 1I"n lie use:I as a dressing-sown, though 1 have chosen to consider its suitability for maternity purposes. PATTERN* NO. 1.701. I in a warm, sunny, open site are necessary. Seeds are sown in small pots in a warm frame in March, and the seedlings, when large enough, are thinned down to one in each pot. They are phi..ted out. without disturbing the root ball, bite in May. During growth they must have plenty of n. eurishment. There are about a dozen varieties; the best known is the Spanisll, but it runs rather readily to seed. A variety well worth trying is the Solid Tours. LATE TURNIPS. Now is the time to make a sowing of J turnips to provide a -supply during autumn and winter. A piece of ground that has been well manured for the previous crop ■will suit them well. Draw drills 18in. apart, ■and if the ground is drv water thoroughly before sowing. As soon as the voting plants make their •appearance, give them a dusting over with sifted wood ashes and. lime early in the mornttfg while the dew is still, em them, and use the Dutch hoe freely between the. rows. Final!}- thin them to lOin. between the plants to allow room for good mots to develop. RUNNER BEAN FAILURES. The foregoing no doubt explains the diffi- culty of which "A Small-Garden Keeper" complains in a letter which lias afforded me considerable pleasure, owing to the apprecia- tion expressed of advice given in this column. Runner beans in hot, dry weather often shed their flowers without forming pods. The causes arc commonly root dryness and air dryness. As a rule, plants can be made to set their flowers readily enough by giving them now a thorough soaking with well-exposed water. This should be done in the evening; then plaoe along each side of the row, to keep the moisture from being absorbed by tire 8Hn, a coating of manure, which will act as a mulch. Well syringe the plants all over each I evening during hot weather. E. R. R.
